Serious Question
 

I am sorry that this is not really poltics per se, but I like the intellgence I read here, even if I disagree with the ideas.

I am thinking of quitting my job and joining the navy. I am 34, and have been a second grade teacher for 7 years ( well third, kindergarten too some years).

The reasons being:

I am stuck in a rut. I am bored shitless. I tend to come home and do nothing.

I am growing to hate my job. For the past couple of years teaching is not as importand as how the classroom looks to the powers that be. As long as the decorations are changed, and the room has pretty pictures, the bossess are happy.

I am getting older and sitting in a room all day for the rest of my life is getting me down. I want to get out and experience more of the world.

I want to defend my nation that gave me so much.

I lost 40lbs over the summer ( since may) and I feel stronger, and I want to do more physical things than standing up with chalk in my hands.

I am growing restless. This may be the last time I can just change my life. I can always come back to teaching when I am out of the Navy. You dont loose your time.

They can pay my student loans!!!!!

I will be an officer due to my degrees.

Plus a few other minor, silly reasons like comradiere, doing something different, and yes, even excitment.


Plus a great love for the sea.

You sound like you already have your mind made up so I say go for it. Teaching isn't the glorified position it was a long time ago... and I agree you will be able to go out and see the world. Go for it and good luck with your adventures.

Just make sure that the Navy (or any military service) is what you are looking for...

Growing to hate or even hating your current job is no reason to enlist. Make sure you sit down and think really hard about what it will mean to be in the military (and not just the cool stuff).

After you've done that and you still want to be in the Navy... go ahead. There are worse things to do than serve your country.

I would try switching jobs to something else maybe before enlisting.

It seems the danger here is this: do you need to joint he navy, or do you just need a change, period? This is a question you should answer for yourself before you go and sign up for something that you WILL NOT be able to get out of once you join. Once you enlist you're stuck - if you like it, that's great - but if you made this decision at a weak moment, you could really regret it later.

Remind yourself that you must be absolutely 100% sure you're in for it. Don't think about it and think its great then when training comes around you wanna go home.

Personally, nothing against anyone, but if you're tired of teaching then its best you do stop it and give soemone else the chance to prove themselves for hte job. But htats whole diff point

I recommend you wait a little longer and convince yourself 100%. Make sure it's what you really want to do because it is one of the few decisions in your life that can affect every other aspect of your life.

I'd recommend going down to your local recruiting office and talk with the recruiters for a while if you haven't already, they can provide even more information and most of them will answer your questions truthfully so you can make a good decision. Consulting any friends in the military wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Hey, the military serves a vey important function and it sounds like its what you really want to do. If so go for it. Personally, I'vve advised several of my friends who have desired to join the military to check out other similar alternatives such as the Peace Corp or work with Amnesty. Some people didn't find that this suited their needs/desires but others found it much more rewarding. It really depends on your world views. What is the best way to fight evil and what role do you want to serve?

Before you decide to "join up" make sure that you understand why you hate your current job. If it has anything to do with dealing with bureaucracy, I'd be careful about joining any military service.

One important thing to remember is that once you join the military, you have made a commitment. You can't just quit because you hate it.

I dont hate my current job, as much as I hate feeling locked up for life in a certain place. I hate that I come home and do the same thing. I love the kids, and my coworkers, I do, they are excellent. I, for years now, just feel that there is more to life than getting fat, saving money and coming home and watching TV.
I am not married, no kids, and just dying to get out and actually do something. I know teaching is something, but I just feel trapped, or stranded. Seven years in the same room, teaching the same thing.

I dont mean to come off like a baby, as I have a decent life going, but it feels sterile, dull, boring.
I am not naive that the Navy will be a grand adventure, as it will take hard work and problably be a pain in the ass at times, but I am looking at the travel, the comradiere, the new places, doing new things, all that stuff.
Man I sound like a baby. Sorry.

I also lost a close friend in 9 11 and I feel I am just sitting on my ass while terrorists are killing others. I feel like I should do my part to help out instead of asking others to do it for me.

If you are doing it because you are bored with your current job, I would advise caution.

If it is time for a change and this is something you've always thought about doing, I say go for it.

One possible option: you might opt for the Navy Reserves instead of regular service. With the Reserves, you'll get some of the excitement without the full time commitment.

Time in the service can be very rewarding, or so I've been told. If you fully understand what it means (it's not just a "job"), go for it, and report back. :)

I know this is my first post but I'll tell you what worked for me.

I was and still am a Network tech. Really boring after doing it for 5 years.

The answer for me was really simple. I got a dog.

I know this sounds a little trivial but, now after work I have to get out and walk the guy. I goto the Dog park 3-4 times a week and see my friends.( Well my dog's friends. We don't even know each others names. We just refer to each other as Jake's owner, or Levi's owner.)

I haven't worked out at all but I have dropped 15 pounds in 6 mos. I think it is just getting out and moving. My outlook at work has improved. In general I would say it's the best thing I could have ever done.

While going into the Military is a noble cause. Just remeber you still have to go through basic with all the other 18 year old guys.

(I remember what I was like at 18 and I sure as hell wouldn't want to spend 8 weeks day and night next to myself.)

BTW. I adopted a 2 year old Lab Rot mix. No potty training.
