Recalling Governors?
Hi,
I was just wondering how the californian system works with regard to recalling governors... Could someone explain how this works? I've searched the boards but couldn't find a post that explains it... thanx

here's what i think.
you need to get a certain percentage of the original electorate to sign the recall petition to start a recall (in this case, about 800k signatures) after they're validated, they allow people to sign up for governor. all you need is the $$ and about 80 signatures and your name is on the ballot (names are in a random order). there will be 2 parts to the ballot. in the first part, it asks you whether or not to recall gray davis. in part 2, it asks you to choose a replacement candidate. davis needs to get more than 50% of the voters to choose NO in the first part to stay in office. if he doesnt get that, the candidate with plurality in part #2 wins the governorship.

here is every possible question about the process answered. Good site.
http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elect...ecall_faqs.htm The bottom line is that it is very easy to get a recall going in california. It's just part of the way california works in general, people have a very "leave it up to the voters" mentality. While I think the process of getting the recall on the ballot was shifty, and rich people from either party shouldn't be able to ramrod stuff through, I also think that the process of the recall is perfectly democratic, and it will be fun to watch. Unfortunately, California has serious budget problems right now, and I don't see this recall really helping anything. But, people will end up with the government that they deserve. If people want to vote in a politically inexperienced actor, for example, as the CA governor then they are free to do so. Personally, I'll be voting against the recall, but I'm not yet sure who I will be voting for as a replacement. (You can vote against the recall and still pick a replacement in case the recall goes through.) |

And there are a lot of people that didn't vote in the first place who are going to show up to vote for Arnold (in other words, idiots) because he's a big name and they think he's cool. I will be voting against the recall.

Well as someone who is far away from Ca I must admit that it all seems rather strange to me.
You voted this guy davis in. Then some rich republican starts his own campaign to throw davis out before his term is up. And it looks like it might just happen. It's madness. If you don't like gray, then you have the next election coming up to throw him out. This seems like a waste of money to me. As far as Ah-nold goes. I like the guy as an actor, but it seems rather funny that a guy who has never even been so much as elected to a school board should take over the reigns of the most populous state in the union. With a 38 billion dollar deficit to boot. The solution to that is either cut services radically, or increase taxes. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Arnold will most likely win since we are a celebrity whore culture more and more every day. This reminds me so much of the absurdity that Oliver Stone was trying to convey in natural born killers. Arnold's popularity is going down. The most recent poll showed him hovering at about 22% (down from over 40% last week).
HarmlessRabbit, I'm voting no as well. But what do you think of Arianna? www.ariannaforgov.com check her platform out and tell me what you think, please.

I don't know if this will work but here are some clips of Arianna.
http://ga3.org/ct/Jdz_B4s1oqDL/tvclips http://ga3.org/ct/J1z_B4s1oqDS/movie BTW, she has an economics degree from Cambridge. I know that Arnold has one (I can't remember if it's a Master's or not) from Madison but it was via telecourse. Wisconsin is like number one, two, or three (can't remember the exact placement) in my field (Sociology and Criminology) so I respect their program very much (but reserve my love for the U.C. system!); however, I can't speak for their econ program and telecourses are not as intensive as regular coursework (just to provide some perspective on both sets of credentials).

Everyone seems to think Arnold is at a disadvantage bcause he has no experience, I think thats perfect. 1) He is not a politician, no spins... as an American citizen he is just as qualified as the next. 2) Being rich and not being politician I assume (hopefully) he won't cater to special interest groups

Well CA's views change so often you really can't see what is going to happen.
And while being a "newb" at the area of politics gives Arnold a few advantages as you said Mojo... it also creates issues. You can't just take over the most populous state in CA with the largest budget problem - one that will double after the recall (a lot of it because of the recall's cost) - and not have a clue what you want to do next. The platform on economics for ALL the candidates are very very very vague - in fact, most don't even have a clue as to what to do. Arnold said he wanted to bring business back into CA - well you can't do that w/o having taxes since everyone seems to be going to Nevada. And no taxes won't be a guarantee - could make things worse if it ends up bad. And other candidates don't have much to say either - the problem is that hard to figure out a solution to. As for the entire situation... I still say those who want the recall are just blood-sucking leaches - then again, all politicians are ![]() |

Hey, Zeld, what do you think of Arianna?
She's been writing columns regarding our economy and politics for years so I'm wondering if you are placing her in the vague camp? I'm assuming from your statement that you will be voting "no" on the recall? Am I right? Who are you going to vote for on the second half--if you don't mind saying? BTW, what do you think of Bustamante (if anything)? EDIT: hmm, maybe this one for gov... ![]() a little severe, but maybe... ![]() taken from They Want Their Issues Recognized
