Picking up my new Nikon D5000 on Monday.

Just ordered a new D5000 and will be picking it up on Monday when I get back in town. Anyone have any tips / tricks for newbies? I'm excited to start playing with a better camera. I've always used Point and Shoot cameras and felt it was time to upgrade for myself and girlfriend to have something better.

I have limited internet access right now and have been away from TFP for a while but when I get back in the states I'm going to start my search for guides and such to learn the book smarts behind the camera then get out and play with it.

Cheers.

Old signature just wasn't doing it for me anymore, so now I have this new one. It's equally as stupid but at least it looks really long. I'm probably just going to keep typing until I run out of things to babble about and see how many people actually read this. I once ran down a hill, fell down and hurt my elbow; my mom said I would be ok, she kissed it and made it all better. I've run out of things to say now, so if you have read this whole thing, congratulations you get a gold star!

This is the ultimate intro for anyone just picking up an SLR, straight to the point and easy to understand. After that, it's just a matter of going out and practicing. Don't worry if you're not that good when you get started, as the old saying goes, your first 10,000 photos are your worst.
