Through the lens of a microscope

I sectioned these plants by hand.
I stained them by hand.
I looked at them with various microscope settings.
I snapped the shutter
Super-up-close plant-guts.
Hope you enjoy.

Very interesting stuff, genuinegirly. I enjoyed it very much; thanks for sharing!

lostgirl 02-19-2009 03:50 PM

This is fun! Thanks for posting these.

I asked for a microscope for my 9th birthday. I've always been a nerd.

mixedmedia 02-19-2009 04:15 PM

These are absolutely awesome! I love them. Great job.

Thanks, gg!

Anormalguy 02-19-2009 04:30 PM

Who knew that the insides of plants were so cool? Thanks, GG, for posting those.

Cynthetiq 02-19-2009 05:29 PM

thanks gg! You brought back many memories of my childhood...

fresnelly 02-19-2009 06:09 PM

Hello new Wallpaper!

Tully Mars 02-19-2009 06:32 PM

Very cool, thanks.

inBOIL 02-19-2009 11:08 PM

You've just reminded me of one of the reasons I miss having easy access to a biology lab.

dlish 02-20-2009 08:55 AM

wow gg!

puts the fun back into veggies!

anyone for brocolli?

C4Fan 02-22-2009 08:10 AM

Wow, man!!!!!!!

I just had a flashback to all those biology (whatever) 101 classes I struggled through my freshman year in college.

OK,,,,,al better now.

BTW, nice pics.

Cheers,
dan

C4Fan - your username isn't a reflection of your undying love for C4 photosynthesis? Aw man, I was excited to run into someone who studies that funky method of metabolism.

Thanks everyone for your sweet comments. It made my week!
As you can imagine, this kind of project takes a lot of time and energy. I'll try to update this thread as I come up with more images this semester.

The microscope I got for christmas when I was 10,
was the best present ever!

Beautiful images, GG, thanks for sharing.

Fotzlid 02-22-2009 09:07 AM

Nice!

Did those shots require any type of adapter or just a steady hand held over the eye piece?

Those pics brought back some memories.
Back in the day, when I was a cubicle worker, I had a bunch of ties where the patterns were based on color enhanced electron microscope images of different types of crystalline structures. One of the patterns looked like the ginko slide.

genuinegirly,

I'm so sorry to rain on your parade, but my user name reflects my undying love for the forth generation of the Corvette, America's sports car. I've owned Corvettes for over 34 years and have two now.

I started college in pre-veterinary medicine but ended up with a degree in Managemant.....go figure. Additionally, I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and at one time could diagram out the Kreb's Cycle.

Cheers,
dan

I was working with a couple of different microscopes for the images.
A setup similar to this:
http://www.olympusamerica.com/seg_se...condary_lg.jpg
Where the camera is pretty much built in.

Then some of the stuff comes from my work with the student scopes, which are pretty much like this:
http://www.olympusamerica.com/seg_se...1_leftside.jpg
For those, I use a camera similar to this:
http://www.itechnews.net/wp-content/...0-camera-1.jpg
With a specialized piece of plastic that links it to the ocular, which looks like this:

More plant guts. I'm having fun with textures.

Hah, great stuff! All my microscope pictures are of metal grain structure. I'll see if I can find some...

JamesB 03-25-2009 06:59 PM

Oh the horror. The horror.

This is a throw-back to plant physiology labs where we did micrographs and drew circles for 5 hours on end. Not bad sections :)

Heehe. I got carpal tunnel from a course like that. It comes back to haunt me every now and again.

Very beautiful and evocative images genuinegirly :) I can see why you would explore these worlds of images and processes. It makes one want to doodle and paint and such.

As a microbiologist, I saw well done. I've always meant to take by D80 to the lab and capture some fluorescence microscopy suitable to hang on the wall.

little_tippler 04-11-2009 09:37 AM

I totally missed this. These are really beautiful gg, thank you!
