Whatever that means.

I'm going to upload a photo a day. I'm not going to take a photo a day. That would be stealing an idea and I'm not a stealer.

My first image is from a hazy afternoon back in April taken down Chicago Avenue.

The above photo has almost magical lighting properties. Would you say more about the circumstances of the shot?

It's not stealing an idea. It's a bit of a trend... or maybe a fad.

That said, excellent image. I really like the contrast and detail in the foreground coupled with the haze in the distance.

Thanks, fnaqzna. I hate coming across like I'm following some kind of trend. In fact, there was a chicago photographer who did this a couple years ago, but he photographed a person a day for one year. I used to have his site bookmarked, but I don't seem to have it anymore. His street portraits came out very well.

Thank you, Elph. our bedroom window faced west. We watched some amazing sunsets from our balcony as we were lucky enough to not have our view blocked to the west too badly. I photographed many sunsets but a lot of them turned out fairly bland. A lot of the buildings in the foreground were already in the shadows while the hazy sunlight was still hitting the buildings to the west of where we were. I liked that there is a gradient effect to the way the light fell on this.

Don't worry about it.

It's a lot harder than it seems... so maybe trend was a poor choice of words on my part.

Next up, we have a broken window.

I had backed up a lot of my raw files to disks. When we moved, the box containing all my raw files was lost. Sadly, the raw file for this one was among the lost files, so I don't remember the date.

I can say that from what I remember, this was from December, 2006 and was shot with a Canon 20D, 70-200mm f/4 L

I'm not sure if it is or not. I'm guessing it is. You know, a couple of bored hillbillies, a rifle, a couple beers, a pickup, and a Friday night. This was taken in West Virginia from what I remember.

It was taken at the Lincoln Park Conservatory.

Today's upload: Monument Valley, Utah

The entire geographic region covered by northern Arizona and southern Utah is one of the most beautiful places on earth in my opinion. Here's a less-focused, shaky view of it.

This is not the usual postcard picture of this region. I find the foreground weight against the prominent sky a more interesting composition. It evokes a sense of sadness/loss that I can't identify.

Great photo work. That first shot down chicago Avenue has a vintage feel to it. I think its the combination of haze and perspective.

Today's is from the San Xavier Mission outside Tucson, AZ.

The interior is spectacular. Had I realized I'd be stopping, I would have brought my tripod for some better interior shots. This was just inside the door so there was enough outside light to illuminate it. I still had to shoot at ISO 800 at f/4.0 and 1/15 sec. exposure.

For today's upload, I chose the church in Bodega Bay where Hitchcock's The Birds was filmed. Shesus had never been here and she is a huge Alfred Hitchcock fan so visiting Bodega Bay was quite an experience for her.

Actually, I've been pretty lazy about going through my pictures lately. I've been taking them and uploading them to the computer, quickly browsing through them, but then failing to do anything with them, lol. I even have a bunch of stuff taken with my new macro lens still in my camera. I be lazy.

The last picture reminds me of rhubarb stalks. I'm sure that is not what it is but it takes me back to my grandmother's kitchen with the smell of freshly baked rhubarb pie sitting on the counter.

So, um... is it really bad to not have RAW files? We have a Canon EOS Rebel and generally upload everything in JPEG format. I know RAW is infinitely better, but we just don't have the space for it... but maybe I should be crying too, if I knew what I was missing.

Beautiful pics, btw. I love the tubular-building shot so far... fantastic use of B&W. Do you shoot in B&W specifically, or is that a post-processing modification?

Thanks, abaya. Since I shoot in RAW, everything is in color, so I have to manipulate the RAW file to get a black and white image.

There have been heated debates regarding which is preferable, RAW or jpeg. I know, it's kind of silly to get heated over this, but photographers can be really strange that way.

The RAW file is like a digital negative. From it you can manipulate an image without losing any of the data from the image. I can desaturate a RAW file yet the color information is always present and I can revert back to the color image at any time.

And also, if there ever came a time when the copyright ownership of a photo ever came into question, the RAW file is the best proof a photographer has that a photo is in fact his or hers.

Excellent shot. Really like the color depth and composition. The window in the center goes against "the rules" but it does so effectively.

I like how it forces your eyes to swim around the wall and then kinda sucks you in the middle, curious to see what's in the window.

fnaqzna, thanks for the kind words. I want to go back with wire cutters and get rid of that clutter around the window. There's something about it that drives me nuts.

If you're close enough to Vidal, you might check it out. It's an interesting place. It's on U.S. 95 a few miles south of I-40.
