The world through MY phone

I'm not much of a photographer. I've never taken lessons, I don't know what goes into the composition of a good shot. That said, I took these two pictures today and I kind of liked them, so I thought I'd see what you artsy photographer types think.

I may take more. I do always have my phone on me and someone's gotta take over for Charlatan I reckon. But for now, you get these.

What is going on with that cabin. Is that in a river? Is this a stupid question?

It's actually a dilapidated old boathouse. So yeah, it's in the river.

Moar pikshurs!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c110/TGFM/8.jpg

The local locks. Yes, they're manually operated.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c110/TGFM/2.jpg

There are a lot of churches in my town and the church bells ring every hour, on the hour. Visitors sometimes find them distracting, but the folks who grew up here find the lack of bells elsewhere disconcerting.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c110/TGFM/5.jpg

And the town armoury. I had to stand on the sidewalk for a good three minutes holding my phone in front of me in order to get a shot with no traffic in front.

Martian 11-20-2007 06:09 AM

I had such lofty aspirations for this thread. Alas, it's fallen by the wayside.

Just a quick one for now, this is the collection in it's current incarnation. There's the Hyburn acoustic, Epiphone Embassy Special IV bass, Silvertone Rockit, Jay Turser acoustic and in back is the new Ashbury KB-100 keyboard, along with (if you can make them out) three Delta Blues harps in G, C and A.

I'm out and about today, so I'll see if I can get some more pictures from around town to post.

Fly 11-20-2007 06:36 AM

Yeah, it's got drum loops, MIDI in and out and it's programmable too. I'm gonna have fun figuring this thing out.

I'm working on learning to play, but it's slow going. Stringed instruments are easy for me, but this is hard.

Fly 11-20-2007 06:56 AM

can you record with it?

you should be able to go direct and throw down some guitar or bass on it....and save it.

add some loops and a harmonica too.........and you got your song baby.

have fun with it.........i know my keys get used every day here.

Got a few more today...

This is a different section of the same path above. It's looking a bit forlorn in this pre-winter limbo.

Signage for The Electric Tomato, a local watering hole. The name always struck me as funny; I don't know why.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c110/TGFM/electom.jpg

I found the wreaths oddly moving.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...M/cenotaph.jpg

And finally, a picture of my cat being a spaz. Why? Why not?

Note the blue and white behind. She knows what team to support.

Two shots from my stay in Toronto, specifically taken to make Charlatan homesick.

This is the new opera house. It was apparently completed about a year ago.

And the Christmas tree in the Eaton's Centre. I took this after seeing aberkok to the subway and while waiting for my appointment at St. Michael's (which is conveniently just around the corner from there).

Yeah, unfortunately one of those fancy new multi-megapixel phones just isn't in the budget at the moment. I do have a digital camera and have been taking pictures with it lately, since the resolution is better, but using that here wouldn't really be keeping with the spirit of the thread (which is admittedly a rip off of Charlatan's thread to begin with).

I'm hoping some time in the new year to upgrade to a new phone, since the battery on mine is on the verge of crapping out and buying a new battery costs nearly as much as a new phone would anyway. When I do I will make certain to find one with a better resolution than my current model.

Charlatan 12-21-2007 07:55 PM

Excellent photos... and yes, the snow and the season make me homesick.

I used to drive by the Four Seasons Centre everyday on the way to work.

Martian 02-10-2008 10:38 PM

So I occasionally snap a photo when I'm out and about and something catches my eye, with the intent of posting it to this thread. The problem is that by the time I get home I've invariably forgotten about it. I need to get into the habit of emailing them to myself as soon as they're taken, so I don't forget.

Anyway, you get these.

These first three shots were taken right before Christmas. I thought anyone who went to that much effort to decorate their house deserved to have it recorded:

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c110/TGFM/house2.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c110/TGFM/house3.jpg

Do not go down there:

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c110/TGFM/noexit.jpg

For anyone who lives in a part of the world where there is little or no snow, this is what constitutes a beautiful winter day:

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...streetsnow.jpg

And finally, you get this one. When I picked up my phone to upload the pictures I was only half paying attention. As a result I ended up going to the camera instead of the saved pictures. This is what showed up on my screen and I kind of liked the effect:

The snowy shots look great. I hear you guys are getting hit with more snow and some extreme cold. I can't say that I miss the cold...

Yeah, it's -18C outside right now. Needless to say I'm not going anywhere tonight. Flurries expected tomorrow and Wednesday and it may warm up for the weekend.

I don't know why the snow shots turned out so much clearer than the others, now that you mention it. The natural lighting, perhaps? Or just that there's less detail, so the low resolution doesn't matter as much?

Charlatan 02-11-2008 05:12 PM

It's the lighting. Camera phones don't like low light.

Martian 02-11-2008 05:22 PM

Aha! A valuable tip. I'll remember that for future endeavours.
