Photo Assignment: 09 Sept 2007 - Your Commute
So we haven't been had one of these in a LOOOONG time - so let's see if we can't start them up again- Charlatan's comment gave me the idea...
Your Commute: Give us a picture or series of pictures of your commute to work, to school, some place you go on a regular basis... Don't forget to add in suggestions for next week's assignment... The Guidelines: Pictures **How you interpret the theme is entirely up to you. **Pics should be taken during the assignment period not just yanked out of your portfolio. **Pics should be 800*600 pixels My Windows XP photoresizer tutorial: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showpos...1&postcount=11 **We're looking for natural images. Some post processing is ok (colour correction, redeye reduction, contrast etc), but no gross manipulation, on occasion we will have an assignment that calls for differing kinds of manipulation. However, for the most part, think "natural." **Give your photo a title, it just sounds cooler that way. **Remember the basic rules of Tilted Photography and the TFP: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=46601 Comments **Comments have to (and this part is critical) have substance. -----That is to say; "That foto r0xxor!!," just ain't gonna cut it. Think more along the lines of: -----That photo would be better if.... -----That subject's eyes would be better lit if you did.... **Comments should have a constructive edge to them, we're trying to improve here not just stroke each other's egos (but do be nice). **Please comment on as many photos as you can, prefereably every one. No one likes to feel left out. **After making your comment please make suggestions for next week's assignment. I will take all the suggestions and select one randomly and/or at the suggestion of the community. **My overiding vision for this game/exersize/whetever, is to improve our skills as photographers. Regardless of your skill or ability we want everyone to contribute.** **This is an experiement, the processes and guidelines are up for debate** PLEASE DON"T FORGET TO ADD IN YOUR SUGGESTION FOR NEXT WEEK'S ASSIGNMENT... Thanks Have fun |
My commute on saturday, but not exactly someplace I go all the time. I live 5 minutes from work so the views kinda boring.

I have taken some shots and will see what I can do to get them uploaded soon...

I've always wanted to take a series of shots of this route I take M-F on the way to work (and as a shortcut to the highway on the weekends). I work in one of the area's largest office parks, but less than a minute away from my building is this little winding road that goes through a small neighborhood.
Unfortunately I only had time to snap two quick ones... http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...y_commute2.jpg ...and my favorite feature of this road. It used to just be the bull, but about six months ago they brought the little one in to keep him company. heh http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...y_commute1.jpg One of these days I'm going to take my camera and walk this road beginning to end. There's a lot of interesting stuff aligned along it...including some emus! |
OK... I managed to finally find the time to do this.

This is not uncommon here, either. In fact, it is very common. Nice shots, Charlatan, thanks for sharing. |
From my iPhone. I believe this is the station at Essex and Delancey.
I liked the colors. http://www.andrewgonsalves.com/img/submud.jpg |
That's really beautiful, Hal, I like it, too.
|
Thanks :)
Now, what you are looking at is two tanks of liquid nitrogen. They are on the bed of a moving truck. One is leaking. Welcome to New York! http://www.andrewgonsalves.com/img/nitroleak.jpg |
Ah - that brings back memories (of Singapore).
I'm glad I'm home now though. I like that. Thanks. |
After trying to take some commute pics on the way to work, I'm amazed that Konichiwaneko not only found such a nice bit of country, also managed to take a snap without any cars or bumpers. (Nice pic by the way).
I'm going to have to work much harder at this. Or maybe my commute just sucks at the moment. |

The last picture is my school building. It's on an old military base. We rent the room out. It's like my own little one room (although technically it has 5 rooms) school house. |
I love the fall colours Daoust. I haven't seen them in a while.

I meant to take pictures of my commute in Reykjavík for a while, but only finally did so last week. And it's a good thing I did, since by now my morning commute is all in the dark (damn you, high latitude!).
A few words about my commute. I usually walk about 10 minutes from my house to a bus stop, where I take a 10 minute ride to work. The walk is shortest if I follow one of the main East-West arteries of the city, but I don't like doing so because it's loud and smells of car exhaust fumes. So I walk more or less in parallel to that street, taking me through courtyards, alleys and a cemetery. On that day it had just snowed the night before. Which made for interesting pictures, although it dulled a bit the green beauty of the cemetery. Here are the pictures. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...Commute003.jpg Snowy leaves http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...Commute007.jpg Nintendo graffiti http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...Commute016.jpg Snow on moss http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...Commute019.jpg Hardy flowers http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...Commute018.jpg Leaning tree http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...Commute020.jpg Zig-zag http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...Commute035.jpg The bus is here http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...Commute038.jpg Sunrise http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...Commute039.jpg Esja mountain |
Why is it that I just assumed that a place like Reykjavik wouldn't have things like 6 lane divided highways and buses? Why wouldn't it? It's not like stuck in the 1600's or something. Ignorance can make a person think funny funny things sometimes.

Babe, I love your pictures (this is the first time I've seen them... he was preparing this for a while!)... they are all quite beautiful, though I like this one the best:

Those are beautiful photographs, ktspktsp. Thanks for sharing your eyeballs. :)
|
Very nice ktspktsp... it's a commute I could get behind. The snow is fantastic and so different from my current commute.
|
Thanks all! Yeah, the fresh snow was nice that day.

There are several routes that I can take to work.
Each takes about 20-25minutes. I usually stick with a single route for a while and change if I get annoyed with it or if one becomes too busy. I took these pics this morning. You can tell from the pics, but there is a very light and fine snow falling (not sticking). It was hard to get a lot of pics along the way since the route is pretty fluid (very few stops). Doing this made me think about the route and how simple it is for a 25 minute drive. I make a total of 4 turns (corners) from my street. I never thought of that before. http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/8328/sany0001gm5.jpg Squeezed up on the right in the pic above is an Esso station. This station has the first Tim Hortons on my drive in. (I made my first turn to get onto this street) http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/7...ny0003caq0.jpg http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/2...ny0005cbm9.jpg http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/6...ny0007cac9.jpg Out my left window is the second Tim Hortons on my drive. (At this corner I make my second turn) http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/214/sany0009csm6.jpg This is a long section of the street where people don't usually turn off and you usually get all the green lights. It is a perfect place for the cops to set up a speed trap. http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/4...ny0010ctw5.jpg Oh, lookee there. Guess what the cops are preparing to do. http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/3...ny0012cec3.jpg Here is a view of the taller buidings of downtown. http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3...ny0013ckf9.jpg Looking to the left in front of that building is the huge open area where they are building a new "Super" hospital. I hope the "Super" hospital does not have "Super" long waits. http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/9...ny0015cgb2.jpg http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/3227/sany0016nw3.jpg http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/2...ny0017cgl9.jpg http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/6881/sany0018iq0.jpg I made my third turn to get onto this street. Here is a cool bridge for you bridge fans. The train runs over this bridge to go to and from downtown. http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/2874/sany0019mb7.jpg A better view of the bridge. http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7268/sany0020cil1.jpg I made my fourth and final turn to get here. http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3946/sany0021iq3.jpg http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/3...ny0023cmg2.jpg |
Sticky, nice commute. I haven't been to Montreal enough. I love those four story brick apartments.
|
Cool pics!
I like this thread, it's nice to get glimpses of other people's lives. |

The ride home is much nicer, it is too dark now outside on the way home. |
It's dark out for me every night without exception. The sun goes down at 7 pm here everynight (give or take a few minutes).
|
I just got a new camera, and I thought that this picture I took the other day to show what the commute home in the snow was like would fit in nicely here. Unfortunately, it's hard to do a two-second exposure handheld, so it's a bit blurry. I like the composition, but I think it might look better if I cut off some of the bottom, probably about one or two curb widths below the curb on the left.
