Well, I have not read Ishmael, but others I've talked to said that it is very similar to The Story of B. There's a passing reference to Ishmael as being the teacher/mentor of B (where B is the name of a character in the book).
The message is basically about how "our way of life" (which generalizes all of the major societies/cultures of the world as one group) is on a self-destructive course, and that there have to be other types of societal structures that would work better, though he doesn't give any specifics about how to do this. It went through some of the details about how agriculture/religion has shaped our cultural mentality, and the signs of why this is bad for us and the world/ecology.
What I really liked about it was that it provided a new way to think about humanity. I was not used to his reasoning process...it makes a lot of sense, but it was just something I had never thought about before. When I find some free time, I'm going to check out some more of this guy's works.
