Religion/God propostion
 

I was thinking the other day....

Would people still believe or come to think that there is a god if noone told them about him? Or what if the bible was never written, would they still eventually come to the idea that he exists?

I believe the question of where it all came from would still be asked. It may be more scientific rather than an almighty that created everything. A 'God' probably would be believed by some people, but not to the extent it is today with religion involved.

in the bible.. it states the people have forgotten about God even when he was working miracles through prophets...

the jews have constantly forgotten about God even though moses went through a whole lot to try and save them...

i believe that if no one told anyone to believe.. or preached about the existance of a living God... or the bible was never written, then simply everyone will forget...

BUT, that is why the bible IS written.. and people DO preach... we must never forget who God is and what he has done for us and prepared for us in his kingdom.


(i mean no harm to anyone who reads this, and in no way am i wanting to start and argument to blame anyone or group of men for anything, simply my 2 cents)

A long long time ago, in a place far far away.........someone came up with the idea of "GOD" and no one told him/her about it first.
There had to be a first, probably to explain why water fell from the sky , or some such thing.
If everyone understood science well enough today, and there was no religion, I find it likely the god theory would never come into play, as it is no longer needed.

That presumes that God is something that is used to "explain" things we don't understand. For somne, perhaps, but for many others, that's not the case. There are many people who understand science just as much as yourself and still believe in a God. Moreover, there are many people who understand science better than you with it being their life's profession and believe in a God BECAUSE of their understanding of science.

Guess I need to clarify a bit. I assumed this thread was asking if humans today, would create god if there was no existing religion.
While I am aware that many of the greatest scientific minds of all time had great faith in a creator entity(God if you will), I did not take that into consideration in my reply. As the thread requested input as to possibilities that would not encompass these facts.
I have no problem with Faith based religion, and in fact practiced one for many years, this should have no bearing on the current topic.
I was simply attempting to imply that most of the reason for the creation of "gods" was due to the unexplainable forces of nature at the time of such creations.

Ah, no need to clarify, I understood what you meant...I guess I wasn't clear in what I meant though :)

What I mean is that, since the idea of a God is not something that is only meant to explain unexplained things (or is even meant that way at all in many cases) that it likely would come into play still. For most, the concept of a God is not a matter of "I don't understand why this is this way, so there must be a God behind it" - yes, that was the purpose behind many mythologies of the past such as greco-roman mythology - but instead, for most, it's a matter of a feeling one has inside that there is something else at work behind all this science in the universe that we're coming to understand so well. So, were there no religion pre-existing and no Bible, that feeling would still be present for many people and it would just as quickly lend itself to some sort of new religion of sorts.

I don't think there has ever been any culture without a god of some sort. I could be wrong, but i think the pursuit of a higher truth is pre-programed. Most atheist and agnostics I know are still searching for some truth even as they deny God.

Just a thought...

Isn’t wondering what is behind science or explaining that unspecific feel still using God as an explanation of the unknown? We are still trying to fill gaps.


On another note, does any one know of any human experiments in social depravation that involve information about whether the individuals developed a faith or not?

Mantus, yes, filling gaps, that's it. What I mean though is God does not fill gaps in knowledge. God more accurately fills gaps in Who You Are. You can argue that God isn't needed to fill that gap that all humans feel in some way and that it can be filled by intellectual enlightenment or whatever various means, but my point is that the gap is inevitably a part of human existence and undoubtedly, in my opinion, some humans would turn to a god to fill it.

And, to put another spin on Zander's question, the entire premise assumes that there isn't a God in the first place. However, if there IS a God then it's necessarily true...well, at least in the sense of a Christian God, I can't say for the others...that if everyone forgot about God and sharing of the Bible stopped, etc etc, that He would do something to instigate people to begin turning towards Him again. Therefore, if there is a God, then it's impossible. If there isn't, I still think it's impossible.
