Self Control

So what is the general consensus on self control? Do we think it's a tool we use to help us socially? Is it conscience? why do we sometimes let it go? Give me an example....

I've lost all sense of self control years ago, and gradually I'm regaining it.

Any Suggestions??

Self Control is a very important thing, without we wouldnt be human would we really, thats what an animal is, something that can't really resit bodily urges, they eat when hungry, run when scared, mate when in heat, etc. What makes a human human I think all starts with the ablity to overcome these urges to a certain degree, using self control.

If you can't control yourself, what can you control?

True power is knowing that you can, but you don't.

I think that says it all. One of the toughest things you can do is walk away from a bad situation. Fighting is a perfect example.

Sure, there have been times when I just felt like getting in a fight and there have been times that it couldn't be avoided. But in most cases, after the fight was done I'd feel bad. Either because I lost or because I really hurt someone. There wasn't a single time that I can think of that I've felt bad about walking away after saying what I needed to say. Some took that as weakness and some didn't. Sometimes I still ended up in the fight but only because I wasn't given a choice.

I think self control is critical for a happy life.

How long should we let "things go" why shouldn't we act on the impulses?

For me it comes down to consequences and what I believe is right. But that's just me, I'm sure others have different views.

As i see it it is our ego that is the center for self control. Our Id part of our Psyche determines what we do for survival. Then it is blanketed by our ego which determines what we do or don't do for society's sake. Self Control lies somewhere around there. When it's a matter of survival then we HAVE to do it. When it's involved with propriety it's determined by our ego.

There you go. Self control is one of the most important things a person can have. Without it, you are nothing. While impulse has its place, it never should replace self control. Being able to control yourself, especially your emotions, is of prime importance.

controlling yourself is an act of maturity and must be learned through experience, you must determine your limits before you can exert self control. societal demands can help us determine these limits but cannot dictate them because it is then group control and not self control.

I think that self-control stems mainly from external societal pressures. Certain social boundaries which we are taught not to cross. Sometimes it's conscience reflecting your personal morality, but for most, morality is also constructed by society.

I know 40 year olds that lack self control. It's sad how their life has ended up. It's pretty much about making the right decisions, knowing when to stop, knowing and understanding limits, what's reasonable, etc etc.
