What Superpower would you like?
 

This is an interesting experiment, see what people choose:

You are driving home from work/school/whatever one day and a radioactive meteorite whacks into the hood of your car. You are knocked unconscious, have some dream about great power being transferred to you, and awaken a week later in the hospital.

You recover and go home, and soon discover you have an interesting, amazing, wonderful SUPERPOWER!

What power do you want? And why? Only 2 choices though:

1. The ability to fly innately.
2. The ability to become invisible at will.

Invisibility: Matches my personality better. I prefer to sit aside quietly and not draw much attention to myself. Sometimes I just want to be able to observe the world go by without being caught up by anything.

Invisibilty definitely! Think of all the things you could do!

I think it fits under philosophy.

Especially since the follow up question is - what would you use your super power for?

This question is from an episode of "this american life" on NPR, about the important mythology of comics & superheroes to americans. I think it fits under pop-philosophy if nothing else.

I would choose invisibility. It would be cool to freak other people out and just imagine all the things you could get away with.

The ability to freeze time and only I can still move around...

I would choose the ability to read people's minds.

Complete invisibility!! Even infrared and all that other stuff, otherwise it's just not worth it.

Imagine getting up and going to the fridge to grab a glass of milk and wham! suddenly you get smacked across your ass, and all you can hear is "AAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!". You'd think you're going crazy.

Flying is good for getting away but with invisibility you don't have to.

Telepathy would be sweet.

Invisibility. I'm a natural observer of life as it is. This would make that even easier!

I choose invisiblity. Although I would rather have the powers of the invisible woman, who has alwaays been on the top of my all time 'if I could have any super power list.

Flying would be next to useless unless you had enhanced toughness or invincibility also. If you aren't flying at 5mph and close to the ground (walking, anyone?) eventualy you're going to run into a bug or hailstone at speed, and it ain't gonna be cool. Biker leathers you say? What a pain in the ass that would be.

Only if you are doing it right... ;)

Im surprised the number of people who choose flying. It's usually much lower!

What doesnt surprise me is nobody has yet given "to fight crime" as an answer for what they'd do with it. Nobody ever does - yet it's the basis of most of the superhero comic books out there.

both flying and invisibility can be acheived... so i'm not really breaking the rules :p

Invisibility would be "neat" for a while, but flying is definatly a more useful utility power unless you are doing something militarily (or if you're a pervert who doesnt get anyway so you use it to spy on naked chicks). What else could you do with invisibility that isnt decietful?

*shrug* Why worry about the obvious uses of invisibility? It is plain what any misanthrope could use it for. Flight is a much less "useful" power, and thus not the one most selfish folk would choose.

Me? I chose "flight". I don't claim to be an altruist, but I love to fly. If I had the money, I would definitely pursue a pilot's license. Invisibility is just not that big a deal. It is easy enough to be unnoticed if you so choose. Dress mundanely, common grade suit works, have a clipboard in hand, and a serious look. 90% of the time, people will neither mess with you or ask questions. Too easy. Flight though...

I'd choose flight. It would impress the babes, and it would be a great way to avoid traffic. As long as I dont get sucked into a jet engine, it'd be far cooler for me...

Depending on the mechanics of flight, whether it would be some sort of levitation or whether i'd have wings or something like that, I would pick it. :P

I want to have web. I could sort of fly and I'd love to walk down they guys hall in the dorms ripping their towels off after they get out of the shower :D

Flying, I have friends all over so that would be great!

I'll have to go with flying. There's great potential to do great good (or evil, if you prefer) if you can fly. I am assuming that this flying will be fast enough and reliable enough to be used for travel, evasion, and some badass aerial martial arts :D

For all you invisible people - what if you get hit by a truck or something, while oggling at teh b00bies? That doesn't sound like much fun to me :D

Flight. I could do insane martial arts with hovering moves, flight speed enhanced kicks, I'd be a regular super hero! I could do shows (or rob...lots of robbing) to make special suits so I can go mach 47 around the world with no problem.
I'd like to be able to withstand any G-Force.

Invisibilty. All the sounds I'd make would give it away. At least with flgiht I could pretend I'm an angelic deity or something come down to spread my seed and get loads of chics!

i think it also depends on what kind of invisible is it like, When you go invisible your clothes stay visible so you have to walk around naked exposed to the elements, or is it whatever you are holding is invisible, if that is the case wouldn't the ground turn invisible too, because you are walking on it? I think invisibility, while extremely useful/fun, is too complicated. I would choose flight, and make sure you work out alot so that you don't get the Fat wave going :D

Invisibility has the burden that you have to watch out for morons who don't see you standing there because you're invisible.

Flying means I don't have to watch out for idiots on their cellphones, I don't have to worry about speed limits and cops with larceny in their hearts and quotae to fill, and I don't have to keep track of who has the lowest fuel prices. It seems to me to be a far more desirable than invisibility.

i choose invisibility... i could always turn invisible and go steal a jet pack or sneak on a plane for free...

Invisibility has more uses, but flying would be so much more fun! I can just see myself floating around on my little cloud, reading a book and keeping myself cool by floating in circles. And it's a great way to escape trouble. Get into a fight? Just float off! Who is going to follow you?

With invisibility, you can watch girls in the showers. But with flying, you can probably impress them enough to actually get them into your bed, and be able to participate.

Both would be cool, but I'm going to go with the flying thing. I'd probably get myself in less trouble with just flying.

Please make my invisible.... that would be sooooo cool...... for aleast a few days....

This is a tough one, because I do like to sit back and watch life and invisibility would give me the opportunity to really observe what goes on behind closed doors. However, I voted to fly as I would like to really see more of the world and flying would give me that opportunity.

flying, it must be flying. free as a bird, defying the laws of gravity. you can even travle as far as you want to. it would be just great, i could fly wherever i wanted.

Flying seems like it would be pretty cool for a short time but after awhile i would think it would get boring, it would just end up as an alternative form of transportation.

Plus, would it be harder to breath while flying? You know, since the air is thiner the higher you go

No one is saying you have to fly high, I don't think it would get boring, take a day off work and visit places you have never been. I would go to Canada.

hmm, tough choice... I would normally pick flying but with all the crap going on nowadays, you would get shot down, or have to pay airport tax and other not fun stuff.
So I guess invisibility, that way I can kick people and laugh bout it.

invisibility is cool, you could screw people without them knowing it... but eventually that would get old and it wouldnt have the satisfaction like you doing it would.
and you just know that if you were invisible you would do all sorts of stuff you would regret later

I would definately go with the ability to stop time, as someone else posted, and still be able to move around when its stopped.. and be able to restart it at any time.

The key would be being able to stop time and still intereact with things.. like move someones drink ect.. or i'm sure people could some up with some more interesting uses=P

Unlike being invisble.. where someone could bump into you ect.. you could just stop time.. move around do what you need to do.. move back to where you were, or if you were smart you would only stop it when no one can see you.. otherwise theres pretty much no way to go back to the Exact same spot you were in.. and I think the difference would be noticable=P

i' fly, i know i should choose invisibilty for the obvious reasons, but i've always been obsessed with peter pan, and wanted to be abe to fly

flight is a great option- just to be able to travle to far off places on a budget- and you could start one hell of a courier service.

from these choices, it would be Invisibility. As previously mentioned I would want to be completely invisible from infra-red and everything else, nothing like Hollow Man where they could see him with the goggles.

I would much rather be able to "phase-shift" (I think that is the term used in sci-fi shows) where I could walk through solid objects or be like Al in Quantum Leap when he is a hologram in the past. Locked doors could be a thing of the past

in either case, I would want the effect to encompass my body so I could wear normal clothes and carry bags and other things. If you have to be naked to be truly invisible then it is a completely different experience. Also makes a huge difference if you can walk through solid walls but not carry anything through with you.

the ideal power would be a combination of both of those.

I am pretty sure no one in here can fly. (more than once that is...splat)

Flying, definitely. If I was invisible I'd get a lot more perv opportunities but on balance I'd like to be up in the air, paying no fare..

omfg invinsible for sure. I'd be able to do so manythings, assuming that i'm invinsible i'd do something that i really love like snowboarding, I'd quit going to school thats for sure mechanical enginerding is to hard.

would the invisibility be triggered when you wanted? I wouldn't want to be invisible for the rest of my life. That would SUCK! If i could control it, then yeah maybe. But for now, flying.

Psionics would be the best. this is why:

You could fly with telekinisis

You could mess with peoples mind and thus manipulate their thoughts so you are invisible

You could conrtol peoples thoughts

You could read thoughts so you would always know the answer if someone else knows and someone always knows the answer

You could be assured of a true friend because you ccan read their intentions

You can protect yourself from har with telekinisis

You would be the best sprotsman of all time with a combination of telepathy and telekinisis

Basically with psionic powers you can accomplish anything. You would be almost god like. Now that is a super power

As long as terrorists don't disturb my airways. The joy of flying would be my biggest reason. I could help people when I could be of assisstance but wouldn't want to be a super hero. They usually don't have time for chicks.

I'd hate it someone stepped on my shoes while being invisible. That movie with Kevin Bacon being invisible freaked me out! Because of that movie I'm now afraid of invisible people.

Flying would by far be superior because it would allow you to gracefully move from place to place at a quick rate and you could also do many impressive things to gain the world's favor. All invisibility does is increase the risk that you'll get accidentally punched, hit with floating objects and run over by cars that don't see you.

Teleportation would be cool. Peak hour traffic would be a thing of the past. Noww that is a dream.

Flying, I have always wanted to be able to fly. Invisivility doesn't really do anything for me. Flying would be be just flat out cool. :)

Flying would be awesome until everyone saw you and government researchers dissected you.

Invisibility would have more uses than I can count...most have been mentioned already. I'd be fine without cloaking from infrared and such, because I wouldn't use my invisibility to get into sensitive places...just for practical purpose.
