Possessed Cell Phones
 

I sent a text message to my mate John asking him if he could work on sunday. He text me back saying 'are you joking'.

I thought this was a little out of character and as I was about to phone him he phoned me. I told him that I had just received his message and he said that he hadn't sent one. He said that he was getting really freaked out becuase similar things like this had been happening since last saturday night.

He had been at a friends house and his phone had rang twice. Because he was drunk he ignored it. Then curiosity got the better of him and he rang it back. He ended up waking a friend up who had been sleeping who said that they hadn't phoned him.

Since then stange things have been happening and people keep getting messages from him that don't make sense and that he hasn't sent. These weird things are also happening to the friend.

What could this mean?

One suggestion my partner made was that he has text a message into some bogus competition and they have hacked into his account. But why would they send weird messages to the people he knows?

Any thoughts?

I'd imagine it's probably someone spoofing his account and trying to mess with both him and his friends.

SMS Spoofing (sending fake text messages) is popular in Europe but I haven't heard too much of it over here in the states.

http://www.spoofsms.co.uk/ (don't abuse this site!) is one website that allows people to screw with SMS. I think most of it occurs from a rogue SMSC (short message service center) which is basically the server that facilitates sending SMS text messages.

Talk to your cell phone provider to see if anything can be done -- I can't help much beyond that (sorry!) since I'm not familiar with the European system.

Has anyone read The Last Year of Being Single? The main character keeps getting these explicit sexual messages from a guy her boyfriend works with; turned out that one of his "flings" has the same name, and he got them mixed up...yeah...it was much funnier in the book than when I explained it :p

But, yeah...strange. Has he called the cell phone provider?
