Jack the Ripper

I'm about half way through Patricia Cornwell's Portrait of a Killer, which is Cornwell's compilation of information relevant to the Jack the Ripper case. She makes a pretty irrefutable claim that Walter Sickert, a slightly psychotic famous English artist, was the Ripper.
This case was never officially solved, however, so the truth is still up for grabs.
I was wondering if anyone has any insight about the Ripper case, any interesting info, or if someone has read this book?
Also, I recently watched From Hell and I thought it was terrible, not to mention inaccurate, what do you guys think?

By god, I hated "From Hell". Depp should've left the olde-time horror flicks at "Sleepy Hollow".

I really should pick up the book.

From Hell only makes sense if you have no Idea about the facts and you're slightly psychotic yourself.

I have read 'portrait of a killer' and i thought it was amazing. I think that she proves without doubt that Walter Sickert was the ripper, which is incredible since it happened so long ago. The thing is if he hadn't been famous the crime would probably never have been solved.

Patricia Cornwall is an incredible writer and i am looking forward to reaing her book about Princess Diana because i am sure that there was a conspiracy. If it was i'm sure Pat will get to the bottom of it!

The graphic novel version of From Hell is much more interesting, though it gets slightly insane towards the end.
I remember reading about Patricia Cornwell's book- she takes a lot of the letters that were supposedly sent by the Ripper very seriously, doesn't she? In fact, I think she counts more of them as real than any one person could possibly have written, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

No, she provides a lot of other evidence. The letters are taken into consideration, but she comes right out and says that the Ripper definitly didn't write all of them.
It's interesting, though, the DNA found on the Ripper letters matches DNA found on Sickert letters. The Ripper letters include diction that Sickert was fond of. Not to mention one of the Ripper letters is signed R. St., which was one of the ways Sickert abbreviated his name.
Who knows?

Read the book. Right now!
As for Cornwell, I'm no expert, but most people who ARE seem to think she spent a great deal of time and money barking up the wrong tree. Sadly, I can't cite any sources on this, but they shouldn't be too hard to track down.

Actually I just got done browsing all of the information at www.casebook.org quite a wealth of info on all the different theories and case informaton. Kinda lets you check out the facts and decide for your self.

One thing that I found really interesting was that of the five women that are attributed to being victims of Jack the Ripper four show a distinct pattern but the fifth and last (Mary Kelly) doesn't match the Rippers MO at all. The first four victims were all in their early fourties. All killed outside. All mutilated in some way.

But here's the kicker, Mary Kelly was only 25. She was killed indoors, in her room no less. And was hacked to pieces. To the point that the authorities could not identify her (the only way they could do it was by her clothing, folded neatly in a pile next to her body). What's really interesting is the back story on Mary Kelly. Not only was she in alot of financial debt, and in several relationship problems, she was also seen by several people after she was supposed to be dead. Makes you go hmmmm. Especially since the people that claim to have seen her make the same recollection about her, that she was wearing clothing unfamiliar to them and that she seemed dazed/upset/troubled about something.

I'm thinking that the last victim wasn't Mary Kelly at all. But another woman, she was in the habit of letting other women use her room, subleasing it for a night to make some money. And when Mary came home that night she found the other woman already dead in her bed. And not wanting to get in trouble for letting someone else stay there/ seeing an opportunity to escape her problems, she went in and took the Ripper's work to the next level, ensuring that no one would be able to recognize the body so they would think it was her. Leaving her clothing to aid in identification of the body, she took the other woman's clothing and when out into the night. This would explain how several people would then see her and also exlpain her unsettled emotional state.

I don't think that's too much of a jump in logic. It just doesn't fit the Ripper's MO to go after Kelly.

I have no clue as to who dun it, but I think having a better understanding of the victims would help figure it out.
