I don't know what type of music you're talking about here, but I think the Canadian indie scene is thriving right now. Arts and Crafts records puts out tons of the canadian bands that surround the "broken social scene" collective: Broken Social Scene, Stars, Metric, Feist, Most Serene Republic. Then you've got Arcade Fire who live in Montreal now. Wolf Parade. I think Patrick Wolf might be from Canada. These are all huge bands as far as indie bands go, and they've all come on in the past 2 to 3 years. If you ask me, it's far from dead!!!!

I don't think Canada's scene is dead at all...it fact, it is quite diverse in many areas. I'd add Blinker the Star and Treble Charger to the list of previously mentioned Canada bands, and just check out the electronic music scene...you've got Fred Everything, Moonstarr, Ashen and Walker, Gavin Froome and all the artists on the Nordic Trax label, Verbrilli Sound and Upstairs Recordings, etc....

Indie labels have been covered. On the corporate side, you have of course The Tragically Hip, who are still going strong after all these years, Barenaked Ladies, Sloan, Treble Charger, Sum 41, Kardinal Offishal, Choclair, Nickelback and Alanis Morrisette, to name a few.

You might want to check out the CMIR Artist's directory to give you a rough idea as to what's out there. It looks out of date and is by no means a complete list, but the CRIA doesn't seem to have one availabl and this will at least give you a starting point.

"music" / "rock and roll" is not dead. people are just lazy.

going downtown and going to clubs/bars/venues you can catch dozens of good/awesome bands nightly. but, the majority of people aside from scenesters are lazy and belive the only music being made is what is heard on muchmusic/mtv.
