The Perfect Metal Song?

Just curious what people thing is the "Perfect" Heavy Metal song. I know that there are a wide range of genres within the general genre of Heavy Metal, but what do you think epitomizes the genre?

My vote would be "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Metallica. It is loud, angry, kicks your ass, but is also musically diverse and well written.

There is no such thing as a perfect song... let alone one from Metallica, eww... anyway, while I can't really pin single song down to define a genre, I can name bands that pretty much do...

Thrash - Slayer
New Wave of British Heavy Metal - Iron Maiden
Hair Metal (huh huh huh) - Poison
Nu-metal - Korn
Death - Death (woulda thunk it?)
Grindcore - Brutal Truth
Black - Emperor
Doom - Candlemass
Progressive - Dream Theater
Power - Stratovarious
Folk Metal - Finntroll
Industrial - Godflesh
Sludgecore - Eyehategod

Those are my picks for the major genres, but each of them branch out into many sub-genres which would be too much of a pain in the ass to list here.

Raining Blood by Slayer.....however, Spungfoo is on to something there....it's gotta be categorized...Dream Theatre doesn't tear shit up the same way that Slayer does, and Slayer doesn't tear shit up the same way Korn does...etc....it's all different, for the sake of answering your original question, I'll say Raining Blood.

Metal Gods by Judas Priest- I bought their two CD compilation,(I don't have it here in front of me so I can't remember the name of it) the songs are all hand picked by the band as their favorites. There is a booklet inside that explains the background of each song. For Metal Gods, they were talking about how they got the metal crashing sound in the background. They actually used a plate with silverware on it and would just through the silverware up a few inches and let it drop back down on the plate.

There are only a few of those bands who would probably say that they haven't been influenced in some way by the mighty Four Horsemen. It is undeniable that they reshaped the industry to mass proportions, creating the revolution.

I believe it has to be Hallowed Be Thy Name from Iron Maiden. The song started as a metal ballad and finishes so powerful.

To me that is what heavy metal is all about.

As much as a cliche as it may be, I still really like One - Metallica. I have always been a big fan of the soft-loud-soft-louder types of music. I also really get a kick out of 'To Live is to Die' off the same album.

Ruling Metallica out and going for pure edge, I'd have to vote for Territory by Sepultura.

I would say something by Obituary, as unpopular as that may be. "Cause of Death" or "Slowly We Rot" would be my song choices, or I'd combine the best of "Corrosive", "The End Complete", . . . . well, anyway.

There are too many to pick one for me, but it's among these:

Band - Style (Genre)
Slayer - South of Heaven (Thrash)
Slayer - Disciple (Evil thrash)
Iron Maiden - The Trooper (NWOBHM)
Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills (NWOBHM)
Metallica - One (it's Metallica)
Metallica - Battery (see above)
Arch Enemy - Seed of Hate (Dark)
Black Sabbath - War Pigs (You don't need to categorize Sabbath)
Grave - Rise (Death)
Hatebreed - A Call For Blood (Hardcore... and I find Hardcore to be more along metal lines than punk so it goes here)
Dillinger Escape Plan - 43% Burnt (See Above)
Dillinger Escape Plan - Variations on a Cocktail Dress (See Above)
Tool - Aenima (Alterna-Metal)
Fudge Tunnel - Grey (Grungy Metal)
Pro-Pain - The Beast Is Back (Hard to put these guys into a category... kind of a general headbanging-metal guitar line to their songs, but with REALLY heavy vocals)
Pro-Pain - Down for the Cause (See Above)
Pro-Pain - Political Suicide (See Above)

Those are just a few...

.... the perfect metal song?

no fucking clue

but some that I think are among the best:

Dyer's Eve by Metallica
Knife Party - Deftones . hard to classify. Deftones are the only group i've never been able to fit in a genre
Aenima - TOOL
Stnikfist - TOOL
Symphony of Destruction - Megadeth
Walk - Pantera

there's a lot of great metal songs. the genre is too wide and bands too many to pick one.

Metallica's And Justice For All, all of TOOLs work (to me metal doesn't have to be sheer thrash)
Megadeth - Dave's voice r u l e s
Shadows Falls - a killer new group
hatebreed... great new group too
