The Roots

God damn..I cant believe i have never picked up any of thier other albums. The only album i had from them up until couple days ago was "Things Fall Apart".

Well, I just picked up "illadelph halflife" & "do you want more" I cant stop listening to illadelph, what a sick album..The beats..OMG. I haven't even opened the other album yet.

K-Wise, your probably like WTF lol. I'm not a very good critic on giving opinions on an album..Just one word, Sick.

What are thier other albums? I wanna buy whatever i don't have from them.
I'm more into the Wutang style hiphop..You know that nasty hiphop.

K-Wise 02-12-2005 06:56 PM

Shit I coulda told you that Illadelph was fuckin dope. It's their best in my opinion I mean just the first 4 tracks alone shit the beats, Thoughts flow..fuckin flawless. I purchased Do You Want More a long time ago used but wasn't really feelin it (I already had Illadelph and TFA) so I sent it back but everyone else I know fuckin loves it. The other Roots albums you don't have are the latest ones....Phrenology and The Tipping Point and Organix. I'm not sure but I think Organix was their first album...released in 93. I ain't had a chance to check it out though so I dunno how good it is.

Asta!!

IC3 02-14-2005 10:26 PM

I'm gonna check thier other shit out, Dude man..illadelph is disgusting...I'm not feelin "Do you want more" as much as illadelph, But it's still good.

And all thier beats are with live instruments..Crazy.

Jadedfox 02-15-2005 03:33 AM

You really owe it to yourself to see them live. Good stuff.

K-Wise 02-15-2005 04:17 AM

I also enjoy Scratch's segments on all the albums...On Do You Want More??!!!?!?!?! I remembered him havin a real nice one...If I remember correctly I almost kept the album for that alone but ended up returning it and getting something else I can't remember.

I also love the poetry segments from Ursula Rucker they've used to close every album they've had. It was hearing her on the roots albums and watchin Def Poetry that started making me wanna try out writing poetry myself. I've only written like 2 actual poems but still haha.

Organix was their first, and it's really raw. It's a good album, but you can see the growth and increased use of sampling through their albums. Also, the linup i think changed between organix and do you want more. Phrenology is...different. I only listened a couple of times, and didn't like it too much, sounded alot different from their usual jazzy sound (ill have to listen again sometime in the future). I just got the tipping point a week ago, and it's pretty good. Its not as jazzy as their earlier stuff, but Black thought is really on top lyrically. I heard it was done more to showcase him, because they rely more on samples than earlier records. I personally think their best was things fall apart, but the two albums following really showcase the fact that they are still trying new things, which impresses me. Id also recommend getting their live album; it's not as good as their live show (which is proably the best in the business, they tour primarily) but it gives a good feel for what it's like.

They are really an amazing band, only group I think comes close in hip-hop is outkast.

IC3 02-16-2005 12:06 AM

Ya Outkast is good..But thier latest album was alittle too..I guess..experimental?

I liked alot of thier early stuff, Southernplayalistic, ATLiens and Aquemini.

The Roots's Things fall apart is dope, I haven't listened to that album in a long time..Gonna check it out when i get up in the morning.

Just ordered these albums off of undergroundhiphop.com
I got 2 free CD's with this order, Not a bad deal.

7L & Esoteric - Dangerous Connection

7L & Esoteric - DC2: Bars of Death

Apathy - It's The Bootleg, Muthafuckas!

Originoo Gunn Clappaz (O.G.C.) - Da Storm (Been lookin for this piece for a long time)

Outerspace (Jedi Mind Tricks Presents) - Outerspace (w/ Free Bonus Concert CD)

Virtuoso - Fahrenheight 617, Mix CD (Free)

I was originally gonna buy from sandboxautomatic, Then i check out UGHH..They didn't have everything i was looking for..But they had some stuff that sandbox didn't have and vice versca..So next week or something i will order what i wanted to get from sandbox..which was...RZA's Recipe for The Cure (Think that's the right name), U-God presents the Hill Side Scramblers, Killah Priest - Heavy Mental..There were also a couple WuTang albums that i have never seen in the stores..So i'm kinda anxious to check these out as well.

Went alittle off topic, I was thinking we should just make a HipHop thread and keep all the HipHop discussion in one thread...Although it would probably get cluttered with so many different conversations...Just a thought.

ahhhhhhhh the roooooooots crew!!! unbelieveable live.
first time i saw them was in glasgow in a place called the arches which is a underground brick wallled cellar-like arts area/ club...really amazing completely blown away by seeing an entirely live hiphop band. and scratches beat boxing was and still is i guess amazing, i much prefer him to rahzel personally.

erm so what am i saying again...oh yeah... if you get a chance go and see the roots live it'll take your breath away.

K-Wise 02-16-2005 05:00 AM

Those are some really good picks IC3. I think you should check out K-Otix - Universal on Ughh and tell me what you think. They're from Texas where I'm from and I think they're dope as fuck...I'd love to spit with em some day. The album is fire to me...I was feelin the lyrics and production. Also I like Clokworx a lot. Among others.

Asta!!

IC3 02-16-2005 09:22 AM

I will check those guys out K-Wise.

Ya Jaded, I was listening to the samples from Outerspace..That track sounds sick..along with the rest of the album.

Fatbob, I guy i was working with awhile ago was telling me about how he seen the roots live and he said it was amazing..So if i ever get the chance i will probably jump on it.

caz 02-16-2005 09:33 AM

Man... I am glad that you got put on to The Roots otehr albums... Definately one of the best groups in hip hop (A true band). I was just wondering if anyone has seen the movie Brooklyn Babylon that stars Black Thought. It is not the greatest movie (kind of paint by numbers Romeo and Juliet thing) but I could never find the sountrack to this flick. Can anyone help?

IC3 02-16-2005 09:56 AM

Oh ya..K-Wise, Is it still possible to pick up slims debut album Infinite? Or is downloading the only source to get it now?

K-Wise 02-16-2005 05:04 PM

I'm not sure but I think SOME places still carry it online. I can ask a couple a people. If all else fails I'm sure you could probably find that shit on ebay.

IC3 02-16-2005 05:37 PM

Oh yes..I like the sounds of this right here....

Take from UGHH news section ~~>Here<~~
Quote:

It seemed as if something was missing from Jedi Mind Tricks’ Visions Of Ghandi and Legacy Of Blood LP’s. It wasn’t dope beats, we know Stoupe had that locked; it wasn’t the bellicose microphone fire, we know that Vinnie Paz blessed that; but what the albums were missing was the stormy consciousness of Jus Allah. News from Babygrande today is that Jus Allah and his other two JMT counterparts have reconciled and will again be making music together. Jus and Babygrande also reached an agreement this morning to release Jus’ solo album in May. Furthermore, Jus Allah will also be included on the long-awaited and highly anticipated Army of the Pharoahs’ album, The Torture Papers. JMT and Babygrande seem quite happy about the reconciliation noting, “We've missed him and his creativity. Welcome home.”
Ok..Jus Allah is so sick on the mic, The only album i got featuring him is JMT Violent by Design..And he is one of the stand out MC's even though he is just a guest on the album and is only featured on a handfull of tracks with an album that consists of 25 tracks..

Im lookin forward to all the work these guys do together and his solo album. Should be straight fire.

I'm gonna be pickin that up K-Wise, Sounds crazy.

"The Word" I love the beat, Has an old school eastcoast feel. Actually none of it really sounds like southern hiphop..not to me anyways..I find alot of the tracks have an eastcoast feel to them.

Nice lyrics from what i heard with some tight flows..I like to hear the whole album. Next order i make..this albums gonna be in it.

K-Wise 02-16-2005 06:31 PM

It's a good album...Texas emcees yeah but yer right with an east coast style...A lot like myself..which is why I like them so much. I'm sure you got Binary Star right? What about Styles Of Beyond?

I almost grabbed Binary Star's "Masters of the Universe" Sounds good, But there's so much I want right now. My next order i'm gonna try to fit this album in..If not then next time. I have never heard anything from binary star..I have known about them, Just never heard them. But the samples i just listened too..they sound nice.

I have also never heard anything from Styles of beyond..or never even heard of them until you just mentioned them. Listened to thier samples on UGHH..They sound tight..Add another album to my "To Get List"

Dam..Too much good shit out there.

K-Wise 02-16-2005 07:34 PM

Binary Star is a must have man...those guys are incredible.

Wolfman Jack
Honest Expression
Untitled
I know Why The Caged Bird Sings

Great shit. Lemme know what you think of Clokworx, Sub Concious, J-Live and K-Os

Asta!!

IC3 02-16-2005 07:50 PM

Your a bad influence..Makin me buy all this hiphop..tisk tisk.

I will check them out..I don't like K-OS, I know that for sure..Well if you are speaking of the K-OS that's from my city that is.

K-Wise 02-16-2005 07:54 PM

That would be the man...likes to do hip-hop, sing, acoustic, etc. I think he's fuckin great..I guess you must have some inside insight to the guy with him being from your city. I like his music and his videos always have the freshest b-boys in em...I'm a sucker for b-boyin.

Asta!!

fatbob 02-17-2005 02:35 AM

hey what do you lot think of uk hiphop...roots manuva, skinnyman, dizzyrascal, taskforce, etc...

also if you like the roots you should defo check out blackalicious!

K-Wise 02-17-2005 02:50 AM

^^^^^ I'll second that selection.

Asta!!

Esoteric 02-17-2005 06:59 PM

The Roots are so dope, The Tipping Point is a really good album imo. Another good track by Binary Star is "Reality Check." Also, it's good news that JMT has gotten back together. I personally thought Legacy of Blood was fucking horrible. Vinnie isn't as good as he used to be imo.

K-Wise 02-17-2005 07:21 PM

^ See what it is is that Jus Allah and Vinne balanced each other out...you got Jus who's kinda got a drawl and almost sleepy like flow..kinda like Prodigy but it works for him...then you got Vinnie who is all energy and spits like he has to rip somebodies head off on every verse...Just him by himself would get a little old but him with Jus was a nice balance of heavy hittin and smooth. Seperate they're both dope but together they may just be even better. They compliment each other.

Asta!!
