Do you like Ja Rule?

Personally, I think he sucks! He sings/raps like he just swallowed a mouthful of gravel. I don't understand why he's so popular....

meanSpleen 05-22-2003 10:14 PM

Honestly, I think he is one of the biggest rap-whores out on the market today. Lets see what I think, a person who doesn't listen to much rap. When I say 'listen to much rap' I mean that I listen to hip-hop, and I listen to rap. I just don't listen to it all the time.

Anyway, back on subject - What don't I like about Ja Rule

1) He's a babyface. He's too clean to be as hard as he wants to be. Look at DMX. That guy looks like he crawled straight out of the gutter.

2) His biggest tracks, that I am aware of, were always with someone else. Generally, some girl is singing, and he's just backing them up.

3) He has one of the worst production teams I've ever heard. He has the most unimaginative music that he raps to.

4) He's just a troll who got lucky. He was attached to JayZ and DMX, and when he finally got the break he needed, he grabbed it and ran. I commend him on this one, but I'm still trying to find out where he keeps his "street cred"

Magpie0001 05-23-2003 04:14 AM

He sucks ass, nuff said.

ZooT 05-23-2003 05:36 AM

do i like ja rule? hell no

brandon11983 05-23-2003 02:15 PM

ja rule sucks. he has that stupid low tone voice and the face of a 12 year old. but no talent. he'll be gone soon enough.

buclao 05-23-2003 04:55 PM

i agree with everything meanSpleen said. Ja Rule has never gotten a hit when not accompanied by someone more talented than him.

Doc_34465 05-23-2003 05:08 PM

Not impressed..

Glory's Sun 05-23-2003 05:57 PM

I hate him for making the word "holla" popular..everytime I hear that word I want to punch whoever said it in the mouth. Ja Rule is annoying. He's completely commercial...

crewsor 05-23-2003 06:02 PM

Nope, does nothing for me except make me want to mute volume.

Atomic Pinkie 05-24-2003 05:19 AM

Long live X, down with Ja...

I mean...even the name sucks.

jch41878 05-24-2003 05:48 AM

Why are we talking about Ja Rule on a music board?

G0dd3ss 05-24-2003 07:57 AM

^^^I agree...he blows!!! (No offense, End User ;) )

gibber71 05-24-2003 08:14 AM

Is that the guy with the stupid bandaid on his face? I think I've heard him,but with rap music,if you've heard one, you've heard them all. I prefer music that has at least some talent base.

But what do I know. I speak english and don't make up words from existing words. The crotch in my pants doesn't go down to my knees and I don't have a car that has more bounce than a fucking trampoline. Go figure.

Handyman 05-24-2003 10:33 AM

the guy with the bandaid on his face is Nelly. The only reason I know who any of them are is because their videos sometimes have hot chicks in them... sometimes one of them will have a good beat, but the stupid throwing their hands at the camera, and making mean faces crap turns my stomach and hot chicks in the video or not, I end up changing it.

So you are saying Jennifer Lopez is more talented then Ja Rule? I would say they both are no talent hacks when it comes to music. (I am not taking acting into consideration).

Mr.Deflok 05-26-2003 04:52 PM

Though I hate to admit it J-Lo is more talented than Ja Rule but still not talented enough to warrant good music. I don't get why people think she's so hot, it's all plastic and a fat ass, not to mention she looks like a fish with her hair tied back.

meanSpleen 05-26-2003 06:29 PM

Exactly what Deflock said. Jlo has more talent in her big ass than JaRule has in his whole body. At least she can act/dance/sing on a reasonable level. Sure, she isnt' the best, or even that good, but she can do it.

XenuHubbard 05-29-2003 01:13 AM

My friend liked Ja Rule until I pointed out that he rhymes "babee" with "babee".

My friend has now converted.

Handyman 05-29-2003 10:29 AM

battle with em? Man, people who limit themselves to rap and buying into these "battles" are really missing out on some good music. The battles are helping sell records, so they all win in the end. The only loser is the person who goes out and spends their hard-earned cash for the CD. A 12 year old girl told me what rap stands for, which I actually found a little funny.. retards attempting poetry.

For God's sake, I just wish that Em and Fifty and D12 and Busta and DMX and Fabolous and Lil Mo and more or less the rest of the game would just hurry up and kill his lame arse.

He's so shit. I'll have to coin a new derogotary phrase to fit him.

Any suggestions?

Pyrate 06-02-2003 02:33 AM

They 'attempt' poetry pretty well...

Better than in any other genre! But then 12 y/o girls are hardly human enough (let alone intelligent) to keep up with their intricate use of the (extended) english language...

A great many people who don't listen to rap and can't see beneath the surface often refer to it as obnoxious and insulting 'noise'...

Did you know this creature? She loves Britney, right?

Pyrate 06-02-2003 02:52 AM

Oh, this is gonna hurt...

Seen one and seen em all eh? The same can be said of any music by those who don't look (or listen) deeper. As far as I'm concerned rockers are all mentally disturbed trashomaniacs who use guitars for other than playing music, popstars are all grinning bouncing bastards who underneath it all are miserable cunts, and RnB'ers are all sick shits who sing about love all their miserable music lives.

But it's not all bad. I've heard great rock, pop and rnb tunes that are actually good. Hip hop is real because it goes deeper than all that hedonist shite and can make you think hard. Yeah, so guns, cars biyatches and all that do get fucking irritating, but like I said; dig deeper. Listen to Gangsta's Paradise by Tupac. Listen to Changes by Tupac. Go use KaZaa. You'll find many coscientious rappas, like Pharoah Monch, Jay Z, Tupac Shakur, Talib Kwale, and many more.

The strange thing is you never seem to be able to find coscientious popstars or rockers, who are willing to throw aside their 'front' and ask the Lord God for forgiveness for their sins, or say I love you mom/pops on the mic, in the way rappers do.

So ner.

Dig deeper man...

ltdaywalker 06-02-2003 04:36 PM

Not that I like the guys music all that much, but you do have to stop and realize that umm... hes pretty successful to put it lightly. There has to be a pretty large number of people who like him considering how many records he sells and how much money he makes. But I really lost all the small amount of respect I had for him, when I saw him in The Fast and the Furious. His one or two lines almost made me throw up he was so bad.

KWSN 06-02-2003 04:49 PM

I honestly don't think that there has been a rapper with TRUE talent, and by that I mean all around musical, lyrical, and extraneous talent, since Chuck D, except maybe Mos Def.

And as far as those non-talent rappers go, Ja Rule is at the bottom of the barrel. Actually, he IS the bottom of the barrel. You know what, he doesn't even deserve the barrel. He gets to sit out in the cold.

I find it rather contradicting that someone can say forgive me of my sins Lord God then in the next phrase he's saying I fucked this ho and shot her man. or something to that effect. Some rockers are fucked up.. sex, drugs and rock and roll right? :D I bet most people think Manson is fucked up but if you listen to alot of his songs he actually has some intelligent things to say. Most people won't give him the credit for that because he's so freaky looking.

Ja Rule doesn't seem to say anything. Ever. I'd rather listen to 3.5 minutes of road sounds than listen to another of his vapid duets. I dig rap for a lot of reasons - flow, lyrical content, creative production, general vibe of the group, but Ja Rule and most other radio rappers have nothing that interest me.

That's wot it is tho.

Words on the mic.

I mean, do you really think the Beatles had a trip in yellow sumbarine with cartoon fish??? IN REAL LIFE?????!!!!!!

Words. Don't take them too literally man. Words are powerful, and some people succumb to them and accept them as dire truth. It's a male instinct to 'front', exaggerate, show off. If a rappa says I fucked thi ho and threw caps at her man, it may well have happened, but maybe euphemistically. Maybe he just soaked Joe wit tha Super Soaker 200999786 and rudely grabbed his girl's ass while he was drying out. Y'know? Maybe he played a guy's chick then threatened the guy with a replica.

Or, more likely, he's just chattin shite.

You see, the thing with music is you can 'live' out a 'fantasy' or alternate life in your songs and your videos. I mean hell, when I rap I sometimes refer to myself as the Demon Of Mischief, or a pirate (my theme) sailing the seven seas plundering unwary ships with my co captain Davie Jones. I've always dreamed of being a pirate since my pickney days dem and now I'm expressing my dreams and making them come true to an extent in my music. Music lets you vent. It lets you 'do' things that law doesn't allow, but in a HARMLESS WAY.

Music isn't physical. Harmful occasionally, but not physical. If a guy says 'I fucked up a cop' then it dont mean he literally dragged a jay out his car and blew his head off.

I mean come on, think deeper man.

The whole world, not just rappers, is responsible for 'making up words from existing words. Hell, we even make up nonsense words from dust.

It's called slang. Or colliquial speech.

Rappers amy seem to do it alot, but that's because their words are broadcasted around the world for all to hear.

If we normal people were also broadcasted worldwide, you would realise that we ALL do it. We just don't get heard by the masses.

Slang is not quarantined and restricted to the rappers.

IT'S EPIDEMIC.

And I'm sure you use slang as well, and have probably (like all of us) made up a word at some point in ur life, even if it's just for personal use.

I really dont agree with you though. It looks like you contradict yourself too. "By those who dont dig deeper" Next sentence.. "as far as Im concernd rockers are all......"

he·don·ism:

Pursuit of or devotion to pleasure, especially to the pleasures of the senses

That right there is what most Rappers are about. They have a big car, bitches, drugs, money etc etc... Hedonism at its best. You say dig deeper & they you tell me to listen to Jay-Z?? C'mon, You dont even have to listen to his music to see that hes all about bitches cars keepin it real etc etc. Look at the cd sleeve. Pictures of him looking hard, with a car perhaps, a few women, a wad of cash maybe. I have one album on wax & its completely coverd with loads of pictures of him looking threatening, pouting, doing that stupid rapper hand dealy, standing beside his car. Its not deep, Its "look at me, Im so tough, check my wheels, playa playa, smack down! etc etc..."

If you want to be specific what youre listening to isnt Hip-Hop, its rap & there is a difference. Defenitions

Dont you think that alot of rappers rap about drugs & guns & money & then...

That is the height of hypocricy.
You are of course entitled to your opinion, I dont wanna start flaming but are you really trying to tell me that Ja Rule is "deep" or "different" coz its plain as day that hes "keeping it real for the streets" just like the rest of them.

Ok I'm thinking deeper. "Words are powerful, and some people succumb to them and accept them as dire truth." This is your quote, yet you say it's ok to use words in a "fantasy" role and it's automatically ok. Why use the words I'll put 6 bullets in your brain and your blood will flow like rain if you think or know that words are so powerful? I'm all for people saying what they feel and I listen to some pretty heavy stuff, but rap seems to take it to a totally new level. They talk about "being real" but then again all they do is front right? They have to be if they aren't really doing what they are rapping about. How can you be real and live a fantasy at the same time? Doesn't make much sense to me .. think deeper man..

crow_daw 06-17-2003 09:07 PM

OK, Ja Rule is a goddammed poser.
Now, onto this little "subthread" thats gotten started about how rap is shit and all this.
I agree with Pyrate that most people who dis rap just dont listen to it. They hear retards like Ja Rule on the air, and just think thats all rap is. The real shit is the stuff that they never even release as singles. If you can listen to Changes by 2Pac, Slippin by DMX, or One Mic by Nas, and then look me in the eye and say that rap is "retards attempting poetry", then theres somethin wrong with you. DMX is the best rapper out there in my opinion, and Nas is frickin BRILLIANT, you guys just gotta sit down and actually LISTEN to them.
But dont get me wrong, I love all music, I find that in any genre, you'll find artists who do their music well. I'm actually a BIG rock fan. Seether, Linkin Park, Staind, Default, Fuel, Chevelle, Saliva, and Live are all really good bands.

Just do us all a favor, and actually LISTEN to an artist before you judge them.

Oh, and I've listened to Ja Rule. And yeah, he blows.

Soothe 06-17-2003 11:55 PM

I think Deltron, The Roots and Hieroglyphics are pretty good hip hop artists with actual meaning to their lyrics. Deltron doesn't talk about the ghetto, hoes, drugs, money and all that shit he talks about life and humorous things, and he makes it sound good and doesn't follow the standard beat. I hate rap and hip hop but I love this guy.

A lot of mainstream rappers out there think they need to follow the path set before them by projecting themselves as hard and tough when they really aren't, most of them aren't even from the ghetto or have lived a hard life like they've said they have. They're just being told by industry to dress a certain way, act a certain way, etc because this will bring them more record sales.

Pyrate 06-18-2003 02:22 AM

Those of weak mind will succumb to 'powerful words'. Those who cannot keep reality and fantasy apart have problems. People live the fantsy in music, and live the real in life itself. Think video games. One minute you're enthralled and engrossed in an rpg of sorts then once you switch off the console and whoooosh!!! The real world is back. Only otaku carry on living fantasy once they've "switched off the console".

In digging deeper I meant in terms of music. Listen to some OLDER Jay Z music. Jay Z died a coupla years ago (metaphorically), but back in the start he was a very conscientious rapper.

Let's switch it and go to something innocuous, like love songs and the people who sing em. In reality, do you really thing these people run through the meadows, love of life in hand, spinning in the daisies? Nope. But they still constantly sing about there "one true love" in every song they sing. If this fantasy was reality, they would be whores, or sluts, or man-sluts, with hundreds of "one true loves". Once again, they are living their fantasy in their music. It's just a different and more bucolic fantasy than that of rappers.

I'll say it now, don't think I'm defending rappers here; I'm sick to my back teeth of all the gun talk and all that shite, I probably hate it more than any other rap fan out there. But I understand that as long as it's on wax and doesn't spill out into reality, it's just entertainment. Not exactly moral or good, but harmless al the same. Unless you succumb to it. Why should anyone compromise what they are doing just because some stupid wayward butthole accepts their words as "dire truth?". That's their problem. If someone was to hand to my every statement and follow my words to the letter, I wouldn't give a flying fuck. That's their problem. I say what I please, they do what they please. Simple as that.

I can understand where you're coming from though. Rap is in a state of fuckeries, even if it IS very popular. It has become commercial, and the COMMERCIAL rap image can be summed up in one word. BLING.

And bling is an ugly, ugly word indeed.

btw, I'll check up on some rock music, do a bit of exploration...

:)

Even 'Ja' himself has admitted to being a bit of 'rent-a-rapper' recently and has vowed to keep out of our faces for a while.

Personally I think he's a watered down DMX for the pop charts.

H12 06-21-2003 06:15 PM

Ja Rule used to be off and on with me. On one hand, there was "Put It On Me", "Between Me And You", "I'm Real", "Always On Time", and "Down-Ass Bitch", all of which are songs of his I enjoy. The other hand, you have every song he's been a part of that I left out. Lately, the songs I listed above are the only things keeping him from the bottom of the barrel, for me. Even then, a recent diss-rap against 50 Cent he made has completely made me turn my back on anything that man does...it's called "Loose Change", and here's the one lyric that's convinced me he's retarded:

"50 you gon' get shot again by tha M-U-R-E-D-R Inc.!"

MurEDr?!? *sigh* I hope Eminem lyrically destroys him repeatedly for the rest of Ja's career.

Eiresol 06-22-2003 05:32 PM

Ja Rule is crap. Venni Vetti Vicci had a couple of ok songs, well er one, Story To Tell. Then he went completly pop.
That's what he is, a pop star.
But one thing I find funny from reading through this thread is, people are saying Ja Rule is shit but DMX is good.
For fucks sake, DMX is about as credible a rapper as Ja Rule.
He growls in his songs.
Uh X goin give it to ya. No thanks buddy.

This is going to sound terribly condescending and patronising. Also it'll make me look like a dick but, go look at the recommend at a rap song thread, and after you have been educated come back and tell me how credible a rapper DMX and his pop brethern are.
About as hardcore as playboy.

Ja Rule is just a nobody, no-talent wanna-be rapper who got lucky. This fool thinks he can take on the arsenal of rappers that Shady/Aftermath has, well he's got another thing coming. He has no respect inside the music buisness and no respect out in the streets. The faster Ja rule is irradicated from the rap scene the faster rap can have a more decent reputaiton.

darksparkles 07-18-2003 02:43 AM

i don't have a preference one way or another.

i think its pretty funny that 50 cent is questioning his streed cred when he's on the cover of tiger beat, though.

SecretMethod70 07-18-2003 06:33 AM

How about do I like rap, period?

Actually, I'd say yes, but I like old school rap. If a person is a gangsta rapper, then the answer as to if I like them or not will ALWAYS be no.

And what the HECK is street cred? Since when is it a GOOD thing when rappers have actual connections to gangs and drugs and pimps? I'd rather have a rapper that's a poser than one with actual "street cred." There was a panel discussion by one of the african american groups at my school this past year about how today's rap music was portraying blacks in a bad light and leading them in the wrong direction. The more I think about it the more I agree.

I wouldn't be very mournful if they all happened to disappear today.

Go to quannum.com and check out the Lifesavas. Now there's some good music. Love the bassline on Hellohihey.

And, yes, I know it's actually Hip-Hop, but most rap is the sorriest excuse of entertainment I've ever been forced to hear.

Uh, back to the theme of this thread guys: Ja Rule blows. He's not even a rapper, really. He just seems to kind of...I don't know...but it's not rap.

Shakespeare made up DOZENS of words for use in his plays. All of these words are now "real" words, and are simply part of the english language. "Bling Bling" can be now found in the OED. hmmmm....
