Good Acoustic Guitar Songs

I'm looking for suggestions for good acoustic guitar songs. I'm a pretty good guitar player so most stuff I could figure out.

What I really want is romantic stuff or nice stuff that I could play to a girl. I was thinking about driving this girl out to the park one night with a blanket and my acoustic guitar and playing some songs while we stargaze and such. Cute, I know....

Here some songs I already know and can play well on the acoustic that I think might (?) work:

Eric Clapton - Layla, Change the World
Jack Johnson - Taylor
James Taylor - Fire and Rain
Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter

Well, not all perfect choices but just some stuff I know that sounds pretty  Thanks for any suggestions!

Hmmmm....fun thread:

Try -

Beatles - Anything by them...really, all their songs can be played acoustically.
ok fine....here you go
Here There & Everywhere
Something
Yesterday

Jimi Hendrix - Angel (acoustic version) - tough arrangement though - romantic
Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing
Babyface - When Can I See You

Oh yeah, good call on Change the World, especially while stargazing.

Uh oh, brain freeze, can't think. I'll get back to you later....good luck!

Arroe 12-12-2004 11:17 PM

Cool, I haven't learned Angel yet but I will get on that.

Little Wing is good. I have the intro mastered, I have it prefect. But I can not sing and play what Jimi Hendrix plays because the rythems screw me up. Maybe I could just play the chords during the verse and the chorus and throw an improv solo in there and then finish it up with the intro played again... my own arrangement.

Is Led Zeppelin's song Black Mountain / White Summer accoustic?

I can't remember. Even if its not... Check it out man

godxzilla 12-13-2004 08:44 AM

If you want to hear a GREAT acoustic song, find Fuel's cover of Elton John's "Daniel"

That is an AMAZING version of that song.

gh0ti 12-13-2004 10:49 AM

Ben Harper - Live from Mars - Disc 2. The whole cd is awsome, but If I had to pick:

Track 2: Roses from my friends
Track 6: The drugs dont work (The Verve Cover)

I got to also agree with Pink Floyd - Wish you were here. and GN'R Patience

Suave 12-13-2004 11:14 AM

Filter - Picture

Wow. That's all I can think of.

jorgelito 12-13-2004 11:16 AM

Wait a minute:

What does she like? I think it'd be great if you could "surprise" her with her favorite songs.

Oh, try Van Morrison - Crazy Love (simple, melodic, romantic)

If you want an mp3 of Jimi Hendrix - Angel, I will e-mail a copy to you. It's a good song to have anyways. Or you could always search for it on a p2p.

saut 12-13-2004 11:42 AM

Opeth - Closure
Opeth - Still Day Beneath the Sun
Opeth - Death Whispered a Lullabye

Just about anything from the damnation album, really.

Macguyver mentioned the Rain Song; a liitle out of sync, some mistakes but reasonable tab. Sorry if posting tabs are a no-no

Black Queen - Stephen Stills
Can't Find My Way Back Home - Blind Faith

gh0ti 12-13-2004 01:40 PM

Actually man, I didnt read the part of "romantic for your girlfriend" when I first posted. I know I'm all about Ben Harper but you got to at least listen to it.

Google for "Ben Harper Forever Tabs" (I would post a link, but most of the ones I found had your usual popup mess)

Here are the Lyrics, total romace.

Quote:

Forever

Not talkin’ ’bout a year
No not three or four
I don’t want that kind of forever
In my life anymore
Forever always seems
To be around when it begins
But forever never seems
To be around when it ends
So give me your forever
Please your forever
Not a day less will do
From you

People spend so much time
Every single day
Runnin’ ’round all over town
Givin’ their forever away
But no not me
I won’t let my forever roam
And now I hope I can find
My forever a home
So give me your forever
Please your forever
Not a day less will do
From you

Like a handless clock with numbers
An infinite of time
No not the forever found
Only in the mind
Forever always seems
To be around when things begin
But forever never seems
To be around when things end
So give me your forever
Please your forever
Not a day less will do
From you

MacGuyver.....TRIBUTE by TENACIOUS D?? Wha...? The rest of your list is pretty good, though. :)

I Will - Beatles (she will fall apart)

Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison and Closer To Fine by Indigo Girls - these songs define the term "chick magnet." I used to play them in the dorm and time how long it took for a girl to walk in.

St. Patrick's Day by John Mayer
Daughters by John Mayer

And now, here's a list of songs beginning with "W" that all happen to rock wimmen's worlds. (I didn't mean for it to be all W's, it just happened that way.)

Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton
What A Good Boy - Barenaked Ladies (a little sad, but a pretty song)
Walk On The Ocean - Toad The Wet Sprocket
Wildflowers - Tom Petty

I'm sure more will come to me...

jorgelito 12-13-2004 02:54 PM

Good call on Beatles - I Will

Try: John Lennon - Woman

An even better "she will fall apart" potential is Stevie Wonder's "All In Love Is Fair" done unplugged. Not for the squeamish, though; very difficult jazz chords.

alarment13 12-14-2004 05:27 PM

radiohead - fake plastic trees (actually, all of thier songs seem to come out well in acoustic)
foo fighters - everlong
incubus - i miss you

Stare At The Sun 12-14-2004 06:12 PM

I have one obscure song to name;

Days Go by_Accustic Version.

Really puts a different spin on the song, then the upbeat version you're used to.

K-Wise 12-14-2004 06:19 PM

Okay heres my contribution

Pearl Jam - Thumbing My Way
Don Mclean - And I Love You So (listen to it now! If you don't win her over with that quit trying), Empty Chairs, Have You Lived
The Verve Pipe - Freshman
Silverchair - Anna's Song
Damien Rice - The Blowers Daughter (Another if you don't win her, stop trying), Amie
Starsailor - She Just Wept
Bob Welch - Sentimental Lady
Bread - If, Aubrey
David Gray - Night Blindness
Jason Mraz - Absolutely Zero (beautiful song man)
Jim Croce - Time In A Bottle, Lovers Cross, Photographs & Memories
Counting Crows - Around Here, Anna Begins
Our Lady Peace - 4 A.M.
Train - Blind, Hopeless, Mississippi
Staind - Outside, It's Been A While
3 Door Down - Be Like That
Travis - Luv
Hootie & The Blowfish - Let Her Cry (Now I love this song but I never woulda guessed girls liked it...I mean it's Hootie for Christ sakes!...But, when I was practicing for a variety show with it, and during the show they would just stare at me..in a good way..I don't know if it was the song, my voice, or just a combination of my voice and my face :|(I hope just my voice)
Rush - Tears (listen to it..it's good)
Dave Loggins - Please Come To Boston (Well I like it okay!:|)
Cat Stevens - Father And Son, The First Cut Is The Deepest

Many many more I just draw a blank after a while.

Asta!!

If you like really sad acoustic songs "Bleed" and "Wasted Years" by Cold are good.

kennusion 01-13-2005 05:40 PM

If you want powerful music and acoustics, go for Bright Eyes. I suggest "Bright Eyes - First Day of my Life" for the romatic approach. The band has a lot more of that type of thing though

kennusion 01-13-2005 05:40 PM

errr.. powerful lyrics, not .. music. Heh.

Well I said I sucked at the romance bit, but the guitar bit I nailed!

K-Wise 01-13-2005 07:09 PM

The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses, Angie
Neil Young - Look Out For My Love, Already One
The Beatles/George Harrision - Something
Rod Stewart - Have I Told You Lately

Asta!!

kennusion 01-14-2005 01:40 PM

Things from Elliott Smith are nice too. Try Elliott Smith - Harvest Moon.

01-14-2005 01:45 PM

Everlong - Foo Fighters.

or like K-Wise said, anything by Jim Croce would be good.

"shortenin' bread" by- momma

lpj8 01-15-2005 05:48 PM

Here are some romantic songs that sounds pretty good on an acoustic that I can think of:

James Taylor - Something in the Way She Moves
James Taylor- How Sweet it is
The Beatles - Something
The Beatles - Here There and Everywhere
Kenny Loggins - Danny's Song
Dave Matthews Band - Crash
Foo Fighters - Walking After You
John Denver - Sad Song
Lonestar - Amazed

K-Wise, this has to be one of my favorite songs EVER. If you can perform it well acoustically, I'd love to hear a recording of it.

One of my favorite songs to hear acoustically is "Time Is Running Out" by Muse. It actually transfers pretty well to an acoustic guitar and sounds really cool when it's just stripped down. :)

TheWalkinDude 01-16-2005 02:50 AM

Play her "She Says" by Howie Day and she's yours. It's really easy, just these chords: C+9 - C - Cmaj7 - C - C+9 etc etc

acoustic guitar?

lots of country blues...i really like robert johnson. sometimes rev. gary davis, though my tolerances have reduced over time. chalrey patton too. there are other, but my mind is for the moment blank.

egberto gismonti
ralph towner
the first pat metheny album (maybe--not sure: bright size life)--i dont like metheney's music for the most part. a great player charting a wide path into wimpdom.
steve tibbets (particularly bye bye safe journey)

for singer songwriter types. who for the most part i find dull beyond words:
ani difranco's guitar playing is quite interesting. she writes good pop hooks. when her pieces turn up on my itunes, i do not skip them. usually.
nick drake.

a friend just passed me animal collective's "sung tongs"
i quite like the overall sound and how the acoustic guitars are knit into it. a cool record.
also, the title is almost my dog's name.

i am still trying to figure out is i like devendra banhardt or not.

nohitters 02-10-2005 07:06 AM

This is not really a love song, and it's only part acoustic, but the song Wake Me Up When September Ends by green day is a really good song

Mojo_PeiPei 02-10-2005 11:40 AM

Don't forget "More Than Words" by the inappropriately named Extreme. :)

Rlyss 07-10-2005 11:37 AM

The Postal Service - Recycled Air. It's original quite electronic but there's an acoustic version that is simply amazing.

Iron and Wine - Such Great Heights. Originally a Postal Service song (or was it Death Cab?) but it's beautiful when played acoustically.

PM me if you want the songs on mp3.

Edit: Also, by Aussie band Sodastream, a song called Welcome Throw. I doubt you'll find it on any P2P network, so PM me and I can send it. There's a bit of cello on it but I bet you could do well on guitar alone. Check out http://www.sodastream.net.au/ and go to the Music section, you can see a few videos and listen to some MP3s from there. I'm not a huge fan of their videos but check out the songs 'Heaven on the Ground', 'Welcome Throw' and 'Varkhala'.

AVoiceOfReason 07-10-2005 12:11 PM

From the time this thread started to this point, the couple could have married, started a family and split (well, almost), but since I'm just getting here:

"I Want To Be In Love" by Melissa Etheridge would work.
"I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" or "Time In A Bottle" by Jim Croce are both nice.

Cross-Over 07-10-2005 05:22 PM

Very late, but I think it still is nice to list some good acoustic songs. There are several that I have seen in this thread that I would like to listen too.

Stone Temple Pilots- Plush

Seven Mary Three- Cumbersome (Not necessarily great to play to a girl, but it is a fantastic song)

Martian 07-10-2005 08:49 PM

Most John Mayer works, as does Jack Johnson (I just got Sitting, Waiting, Wishing down). Then there's Barenaked Ladies; a lot of what they do translates well. Try The Flag, Old Apartment, Brian Wilson, Yoko Ono, If I Had $1 000 000, For You or When I Fall. Many of these were originally done with just an acoustic guitar and sound really good, especially if you have the singing voice to back it up (which unfortunately, I don't).

batteraziiz 07-10-2005 09:20 PM

Marilyn Manson - Five To One
or
Marilyn Manson - Working Class Hero

thanks for the suggestions though, even though this has just become a collection of good acoustic songs it's great to hear suggestions cause i'm always a sucker for romance songs to play anyways.

gilbert- 07-11-2005 02:17 AM

Acoustic you say?
I'll state the obvious and reccommend anything by the following artists:

Jack Johnson
Pete Murray
Xavier Rudd
Gary Jules
Donovan Frankenreiter (Doubt you've heard of him, he is a surfer)

This is all I can think of at the moment

Arroe 07-11-2005 07:31 PM

i've heard of donavon, i saw him live once and bought his cd. good stuff.

Gatorade Frost 07-11-2005 10:44 PM

I really love Nick Drake, personally. He's not romantic for the most part (or if at all for that matter) but it's great music. Very emo. I listen to him quite a bit.

OuterHeaven 07-19-2005 06:07 AM

here's one that you can have fun with, The Hard Time Killing Floor Blues by Skip James, that one would be totally awesome for putting somebody to sleep, so peaceful...

balderdash111 08-01-2005 07:18 AM

If you can manage it, try Michael Hedges playing "i carry your heart"

It's an e.e. cummings poem.

Lyrics:

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

Musically, you can skip the fretless bass part and it's still pretty.

BUT, Michael Hedges is a madman on the guitar, so it may be way too hard to play. Want a teaser? The tuning is BbFCEbFBb

zenmaster10665 08-01-2005 08:01 AM

My Suggestions, based upon my personal experience ;)

Radiohead - Creep (four chords, 3 in the same shape)
Pearl Jam - Black
David Gray - Babylon

cabbit 08-05-2005 11:30 PM

The first two that come to mind are Queen's "'39" and Pink Flloyd's "Mother"

Sugarmouse 08-06-2005 07:31 AM

Eric Clapton - Layla, Change the World
Jack Johnson - Taylor
James Taylor - Fire and Rain
Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter

a bit late to the party, oh well.
Lyle Lovett's If I Had a Boat seems to please people for some reason.
My own favorite (feasibly) acoustic romantic song is Talking Heads' This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) from Speaking in Tongues.

"Wild World" and "Sad Lisa" - Cat Stevens
"Push" - Matchbox 20
"Try To Get Some Sleep" - K's Choice worked up a great acoustic version
"What Makes You Happy" - Liz Phair...not entirely acoustic, but it could be...and good, at that

Good choice. The tuning's a bit odd (at least, from the tab I've seen), but it certainly does sound nice even though it's such a sad song.

Another sad one I really like to play is Clapton's 'Tears in Heaven' (It's the first real song I ever learned how to play all the way through)

Lots of good choices here. Mayer is an excellent choice, although some of his stuff is a bit difficult and 'thin,' in my opinion.

Jack Johnson is a good one too, but 'Taylor?' Isn't that about a young hooker? I've read the lyrics and ran the song through my head a couple of times and I believe he's talking about Taylor being a hooker. I mention this only because I don't think it'd be wise to sing songs about call girls to your girlfriend. :)

There's been a few mentions of The Beatles... I really like 'Julia' and 'Dear Prudence'

guthmund - Taylor is about a young hooker, but it's a nice song if you don't listen to the lyrics too closely (and you really have to in order to catch the meaning).

Back to more suggestions, if you like Jack Johnson and Donovan Frankenreiter than G Love and Special Sauce might be your style to. They're more Philadelphia blues, but they have a good sound and a lot of their songs are good acoustic. They do Rodeo Clowns, but also worth checking out are Gimme Some Lovin and possibly Baby's Got Sauce, although I haven't tabbed that one and I don't know how well it translates.

Oh, no doubt. I especially like the riff he beats out at both the beginning and end of the song. I just thought it was funny that a song about a hooker and a degenerate john was suggested to a guy asking songs to play for his girlfriend.

I forgot to mention, Joe Satriani. I can't play a whole lot of his stuff, but I like to pull things from his songs from time to time to warm up and such... The lead in "Always with me, always with you" is probably my favorite.

I'm not sure if anyone else heard/seen it but I didn't mind Marty Casey's (Rockstar INXS) version of The Killers - Mr Brightside

O and Foo Fighters - Everlong ROCKS :)

The Grateful Dead have an album called Reckoning that I've heard a lot of acoustic artists cover. The album was designed as a showcase ofr acoustic Dead songs, and they are all easy to sing and play.

Men: If you ever want a girl, write a song. Make it pretty, which doesn't necissarily mean romantic or complicated. Just something nice.

If you have something that you have written, play it for her and wait for her to ask what it is, then tell her it's just something you wrote.

Honestly, I've fallen for a hundred musicians this way.

(Or four, but shh! It works.)

I haven't read the entire thread, so my apologies for any repeats. Here are some great albums that are all (or mostly all) acoustic:

CSNY - Deja Vu
Ralph Covert - Eat at Godot's
Ralph Covert - Birthday
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Simon and Garfunkel - Greatest Hits

Anything by Ryan Adams (especially from Love Is Hell ie; I See Monsters, English Girls Approx., Wonderwall, Please Do Not Let Me Go, etc etc) A few from Death Cab for Cutie's last two studio albums, anything by Iron & Wine, Ron Sexsmith, The New Pornographers, The Shins, Rufus Wainwright, and there is an unsigned guy from toronto named Reid Jamieson that is very Jack Johnson meets Jeff Buckley... I swear Buckley's soul is inhabiting him. There's always Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis' solo stuff... great acoustic alt. country.

Foo Fighters - Times Like These
