Metal Recomendations any one?
I have been just recently getting into listening to metal, and I was looking for some insight as to who is worth checking out.
As it stands, I'm addicted to Slayer, and own God Hates us All, Reign in Blood, and Divine Intervention. A friend had me try Pantera: Vulgar Display of Power, which I also enjoyed thoroughly and entirely. Mudvayne is also a favorite (The end of all things to come). Tried System of a Down, and wanted to kill the lead singer before track two was over. Also my friends are real into bands like In Flames, which I also like a lot. So, any and all suggestions are welcome! Thanks guys. |

Clutch (Not really metal, more stoner rock, but just as good) Death Hatebreed Lamb of God Shadows Fall Down Mudvayne's L.D.50 is far superior to anything else they've put out IMO The Bled And now for something completely different... The Dillinger Escape Plan PsyOpus Pig Destroyer Tiwanaku (I believe they only have a 4 song demo floating around the net, but it's wonderfully different) Finally, a band of which I've only recently been introduced, Crotchduster. :thumbsup: |

I buy a lot of cds, can any one point out some of the better albums by these artists? I'm on dial up which makes downloading tuff. |
If I had to pick just one album by Prong I guess it would be Cleansing. But I like Prove You Wrong and Beg To Differ as well.

New Dark Tranquillity album (Character) was leaked recently. I can't tell you how great it is in the space provided here. Also look at some of their old stuff, especially if you like In Flames, since several members have been in both bands. The new (Projector, Character) are great, and old stuff like Enter Suicidal Angels is a different sound (back when Anders Friden sang for them.)

for bands how about soulfly sepultra motorhead rob zombie Nine inch nails ministry marilyn manson the last few are industrial metal, you didnt really mention what kind of metal your into (im assuming your just trying to get all you can and then get your tastes?) ill also second black label society anthrax megadeth machinehead old metallica iron maiden and you may or may not like slipknot (im neutral on listening to them) if you want to branch out to a little more "drugged" style hardrock/metal you could try monster magnet (the older their album the more crazed the music) for grungish type metal there is alice in chains and soundgarden and thats all i can think of for now |

Well, essentially, yes, I am trying to find the sounds that I find appealing.
I've listened to Sabbath forever and I am kind of sick of their sound. Tried some megadeath a while back, and it was alright. I know that I dont really like Metallica. I have White Zombies album La Sexorcisto. Ive heard Shadows Fall, and Soulfly and like both of those. Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I guess I either need to get someone downloading and burning for me, or take a trip to the store! |
I'll definitely reiterate Clutch (Pure Rock Fury), Ministry (Psalm 69), and Machine Head (Burn My Eyes). Three amazing bands.
I'll add some more: Carcass (Heartwork) Napalm Death (mostly from 'Fear, Emptiness and Despair' and later) Death ('Individual Thought Patterns' was their best but it all kicks ass) these are on the death/grind side. The Carcass and Death albums have REALLY impressive guitar work. Masterpieces. On the lighter side there is Faith No More. Damn fine band. Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger was a great metal album too. Dirt by Alice In Chains was great alternametal also. Corrosion of Conformity (Deliverance) is a great hard rock/metal band that is good for audiences that like loud guitars but nothing too hard. Deftones is cool too. Flotsam and Jetsam is great for classic metal. Anything from Quatro and later (except Unnatural Selection) is great. Grip Inc. is cool too. Damn I wish I could make you a mix cd of these bands. I'd know the perfect songs from each. |

Opeth is the best metal band, if not one of the best bands of any genre, I've ever heard.
A few songs I'd recommend you listen to for a good idea of what Opeth is about: The Drapery Falls Bleak Moonlapse Vertigo Godhead's Lament Windowpane They do the best mix of light and heavy ever. I don't even know what to tell you about them, besides they are incredible. |

I'll also add Twisted Method.. bunch of straight edge kids but they put on a hell of show and some good music too. Avenged Sevenfold. I'm kinda on the fence about them.. they have some good songs though Fear Factory- It doesn't get any better IMO |

Opeth is a great band but its not the best (never say that a band is the best say that is what u most like) and is not prog rock. Is prog death metal and one of the bests. Black label is a good band i dont like their style but i respect it. Im seeing Slipknot with Iron Maiden??? What is this??? it says METAL recomendations, Slipknot its not metal. If u dont feel ready to hear death or black metal begin with classics, Iron Maiden, Metallica (1981-1989), Old Sepultura, Slayer, Venom, Dio, Accept, Judas Priest. Heavy Metal is the law. |
Phantom lord, I think you are being a little too strict on your definition of "Metal".
I will take all of your suggestions, as for who to check out, but cmon man. God Hates us All is most definatly metal. I see "old" heavy metal as hardly metal at all. Ive heard In Flames Colony, and Whoracle, and they are great. They are in no way masters. In fact, I prefer to hear Slayer over them. Not really a Nu-Metal fan, but I would still classify a lot of it as metal. Just cuz you dont like it, and you are a metal fan, does not equate with it being "NOT METAL". That said, thanks for the suggestions. |

Whether it's Goth <b>Metal</b> or Black <b>Metal</b> or Thrash <b>Metal</b> or any thing that is known to have metal behind it is all <B>Metal</B> to insult one is to insult part of the genre as a whole. I don't like all of the stuff but let's face it metal is metal. To say bands like Slipknot and Chimaira aren't metal then what are they? They definately aren't rock. |

If you like the thrash style of Slayer, check out old Sepultura, like "Arise" and "Beneath the Remains." I would venture to say that it is even better than Slayer's "Reign in Blood." Of course that is just my opinion.
That is another thing. There are a lot of "elitists" in the metal community who will look down on you because of bands you listen to. Forget them, and just listen to what you like. More bands to check out (as if you don't have enough already).... Arch Enemy Nevermore Solefald Iced Earth Graveworm hmm, I think most have been said, but whatever. |
burzum is the only purveyor of metal variants that interests me these days.
i have a sentimental attachment to the form, but find myself having to be talked into checking out newer stuff. thanks to the good dr bindujeet, my itunes was invaded...i am not at all sure that the reasons i like burzum's stuff have to do with what you normally listen for when you listen to metal, but then again, i do nto really care about that. |

I know that RIAA lawsuits have peed on everybody's pant legs, but does anyone know of metal VIDEOS? I saw a couple In Flames vids, and I thought they were good stuff. It was off the album before "soundtrack fo your escape."

Question: how many of you really dig the "cookie monster" vocals that are on so many metal tracks these days? It seems to me like a cop out, like "hey I can't sing but I can sound like cookie monster so I'll do that." I really like metal singers who can actually sing. That's why I'm interested in: Strapping Young Lad (their drummer is insane. and fat.) Shadows Fall (yes I know they scream, but they also sing, and the singing isn't of the cookie monster variety) Killswitch Engage (I like Howard better than Jamie, and again they do scream but also sing) In Flames (because that guy can scream in tune) Sevendust (cuz they're from Atlanta and they rock) Mudvayne (because they have silly bass work and truly interesting song structure. I agree that LD 50 is their best so far) Tool (duh) And the new Megadeth is absolutely excellent. I think they are one of the all time greats. Dave Mustaine is a vastly underrated songwriter, and will likely be remembered at least in metal circles as one of a very few true pioneers in thrash metal. And for those who get hung up on genres: I think we all know that if it feels like metal and it rocks balls then who the fuck cares what some record store dork classifies it as? Hell, I saw Godsmack open for Metallica a month or so ago and enjoyed it. I saw Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit blow UP a crowd (along with Deftones, Mudvayne, and Metallica) at Turner Field in Atlanta a coupla summers ago. Sure they don't have the greatest reputation or integrity in the biz, but if it jams then who gives a shit? |
Oh yeah and go get Snot's one and only album. It's not exactly metal but it rocks hard and has some great songs. It was a real tragedy their singer was killed in a car wreck.

I dont know exactly what you're looking for, the question is a little broad. I'm a grind man myself. I'm blown away nobody has yet recomended Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Stoaked that someone dropped some other Scott Hull with the Pig Destroyer Reference. Both of them would be good to pick up, on Agoraphobic's "Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope" they drop 2000 BPMs on their drum machine.

So get some Severe Torture. ;) I'm not that hardcore, so some of this stuff I list may be edging away from metal in any number of directions. List of things unmentioned, genres are my own opinion: Workhorse Movement: Stoner Metal Mad Trucker Gone Mad: Redneck Metal Lollipop Lust Kill: They call themselves 'murder metal', I think that's pretty accurate. Vaux: A friend of mine calls this 'yelling metal' Therion: Orchestral metal. I'm told their older stuff is straight death metal, I haven't heard any though White Lion: Hair metal. Vomitron: They're just... wierd. I got their stuff off MP3.com before it sucked, so they may be hard to find now Violent Work of Art: More yelling metal Union Underground: I'd call it nu metal. You should get all the stuff that people say sucks too, form your own opinions Stahlhammer Grindstone Shuvel: rap metal Raised Fist: I think they're technically punk, sounds like metal to me though. Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake (most underrated album of 2004 IMO) Suffocation - Souls to Deny (it's Suffocation, with a new album...do I need to say anything else?) Borknagar - Epic (great prog release) My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, Words of Light (doomy metal at it's fucking finest!) Decapitated - The Negation (DM from probably the youngest guys in the genre...tons of energy!)
