Aphex Twin

Any other listeners of Aphex Twin on here? It took me a long time for me to like him, but I can now that i've found a few gems. A lot of his material is "out there" and it's difficult to enjoy, despite it's compositional and experimental complexity. There are a few very enjoyable tunes out there though, and my top 3 have to be:

1. Flim -- a friend of mine jokingly described it as kirby music. He then proceeded to be hooked as it grew on him and now it's one of his favorites. This one is gold. I also recently found a cover by a jazz trio called The Bad Plus, which I think is very interesting.

2. IZ-US -- the first song of his that I liked, and it's definitely worthy of top-3. It's a lot like flim, and for some reason it's been grouped with flim a couple times on the aphex twin forum (http://aphextwin.nu/). It's got a very nostalgic sound, something you can find more of by Boards of Canada, though I don't like their stuff as much as these aphex tunes.

3. Finally, Blue Calx -- it's very minimalist, ambient, and has an incredibly tranquilizing effect on me. I can be in the most frantic mood and it'll do something powerful as soon as i hear the first notes. I highly recommend this one. It also does a great job of showing the versatility of Aphex.

So if you've got an open mind and are interested in breaking the Aphex entry barrier, I think these top 3 would do good things for a newbie.

fuelmyfire: thanks for the recommendations, those are great.

window licker is pretty good, though it's video stands on its own. it's incredibly well done, and totally fucked up.

i should have added girl/boy song, and RDJ album is a crazy piece of drill & bass.. ambient works 85-92 is pretty good as an overall album too

Windowlicker, Girl/Boy, the RDJ Album is the best one he has, in my opinion.

I really like the Selected Ambient Works albums, great music for relaxing. I also like some of his faster tracks, such as Windowlicker.

Icct Hedral is an amzing piece of music by the twin.

I also love On and Donkey Ruhbarb.

In fact I love all of his music! Well almost all, track 2 of the Windowlicker EP (sometimes called "equation") isn't exactly the easist thing in the world to listen to!

Check out Polygon Window - Surfing on Sine Waves (also RDJ under a different pseudonym)

If anyone wants to know more about our illusive Rickard James. Do a search for a doc called afxfaq. Its huge tracklists etc plus all the other stuff too. Like his armoured personell carrier & the whole bankvault/record studio.

If you liked the Come to Daddy vodeo look up Chris Cunningham. Hes the man responsable. He also did the Windowlicker vodeo.
Bjorks amazing "All is full of love"
Portisheads "Only you"
Madonnas "Frozen"
Squarepushers "Come on my selector"
Leftfields "Afrika Shox"
A mental Playstation 2 ad
& a fuckload more.

The guy does things with lenseflares you wouldnt believe. Hes out of this world & before his time. All filmmakers should pay close attention to whatever this guys piointing a camera at.
Do yourself a favour & go out & get that shit. You wont be sorry.

i haven't really heard much Aphex Twin outside of the his 2 ambient volumes. Volume 1 is pretty good, whilst volume 2 is a must, absolutley fantastic. I don't really like the more techno/drum/heavy beat stuff tho, just nice relaxing peaceful ambience.

Aphex Twin is so kingly its not even funny. There music is so revolutionary and different from most of the stuff out there. I think that some of there best songs are of course Come to Daddy and Iz-Us is quite good.
