Requiem for KSJO
KSJO was a rock station in San Jose that had been running for 36 years. Eventually 92.3 encompased 92.3 and 92.5, stretching along the coast from the upper Bay Area down to San Luis Obispo. They played a mix of classic rock and alt rock, and there were no other stations quite like it. 105.3 (Live 105) plays modern rock, garage rock, and general alternative, 107.7 (The Bone) plays classic, arena and acid rock, and 104.5 plays pop music from the mid 60s on up.
Then KSJO disappeared overnight, on October 28th. Turning to 92.3 on the dial brought you Spanish radio the next day. I thought there had been a mistake, but no, KSJO had changed formats. Clear Channel decided that this 36-year old rock station broadcasting out of the biggest city in Northern California would make more money by catering to the growing Latin population. More power to them, I guess, but Clear Channel can kiss my ass. Their press release says they plan to do this in 20 to 25 more markets. That's not 20 to 25 more radio stations. That's 20 to 25 more regions of the country. I live in San Francisco, a very ethnically aware city, and there are plenty of stations to turn to on the dial for Latin music. I can't really say if this format change fills a gap for this demographic, but I wish Clear Channel had picked a different station, and I wonder who's favorite radio station will go next. Thirty-six years, always rock n' roll, vanished overnight. My brother had I had been listening to it for over fifteen years, maybe closer to twenty. Half its lifespan. I'd been listening to it on the same car radio, a cheapo Audiovox tape deck, since 1991. Rest in peace. Last edited by Johnny Rotten; 11-11-2004 at 07:38 PM.. |
