Beatle Album Tournament, The Finals

Voting to continue until at least noon CST, November 2, 2004.

Championship round:

5. ABBEY ROAD
3. RUBBER SOUL

Consolation round:

1. REVOLVER
2. SGT. PEPPER

I've done this four other times on other boards. Twice REVOLVER won and twice The White Album prevailed. This is the first time ABBEY ROAD made it to the championship match. RUBBER SOUL beat PEPPER once, I think, but lost in the final.

Thanks to all that played in this. If you think you'd like to do the song catalog (I have a 256 entry tournament drawn and ready to go), please let it be known. (I also have tournaments for Led Zeppelin, Bowie, Steely Dan, Rolling Stones and all of the individual Beatles available, too, if there's interest in it).

grendel 10-28-2004 10:12 AM

the song tourney would be cool...

my votes (as tough as this is...)

5. Abbey Road
1. Revolver

FoolThemAll 10-28-2004 10:16 AM

Two incredibly easy votes. Not even close, in my mind.

3. RUBBER SOUL

1. REVOLVER

And yeah, I'd like to do the song tourney.

I'm going by sheer songs I adore.

Songs that made me vote for SGT PEPPER

3. With A Little Help From My Friends
6. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
10. When I'm Sixty-Four
18. Strawberry Fields Forever
3 votes for SGT PEPPER plus an album quality rating from 1 to 10 being 7..10 for SGT Pepper

1 vote for REVOLVER..with album quality of 10..equaling 11.

Therefore, REVOLVER for consolation.

I'm not even using the system for the next one.

ABBEY ROAD.

Rubber Soul (but I want you/ she's so heavy is my favorite Beatles song... hard hard choice.)

I wasn't clear enough in my original note, and I apologize for that. I have SONG tournaments ready for those other artists. On the other hand, album tourneys are easy to do--fewer of them, you see.

And I just remembered I've done a Dylan album tourney in the past that was fun.

I see enough interest for us to start the Beatle Song tournament. I'll get it going as soon as I can.

Championship round:

3. RUBBER SOUL

Consolation round:

1. REVOLVER

Neither presented me with a hard choice. There are too many dead spots on the finely crafted ABBEY ROAD ("I Want You" and "Oh Darling" for two), and very little fat on RUBBER SOUL. I prefer REVOLVER to both, but that's the nature of these tourneys--forced choices!

See you in the song tourney.

I have to agree with you here. Not a single second of wasted space on Abbey Road.

Two directions, here. Although I personally agree with anleja that "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is a tremendous piece of music from John, and that "Oh Darling" is nowhere near a throwaway, I have to also disagree with Harry Cox with my own personal opinion that "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is my least favorite of any Beatle song anywhere, anytime. To me, that's where the wasted space on Abbey Road is located.

Abbey Road

Revolver

Harry Cox 11-01-2004 05:19 PM

This thread caused me to pull out Abbey Road on the way home from work today. I even took the long way home and drove around the block 3 extra times just to hear the whole album. Pure brilliance.

warrrreagl- I respectfully disagree. I like the irony in Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Thta's what makes it so good, IMHO.

Well, I don't know why my original user name was banned, and if this one gets banned, too, I'll not be trying to get back here anymore. I prefer having my real name on bulletin boards, anyway.

The winner was ABBEY ROAD by a comfortable 10-6 count. REVOLVER cleaned up over PEPPER by 15-1, I think.

I *think* I was banned (I wasn't given an explanation) because I started the song tournament in 5 different threads. When the admin combined them into one, I took it down because it made for a hopeless jumble for me to try to count (and the voters to keep up with). I'll try to start it again tonight, this time posting only the first quarter of the first round. When voting on that ends, then I'll post the second quarter, etc. It will make it last longer, but I can make the voting on the rounds shorter than a week to keep it moving.

I don't know why your old name was banned either, but take some advice from a fellow respectful TFP participant: at the moment, a conciliatory tone would be the wiser move.

5. ABBEY ROAD
1. REVOLVER

anleja 11-07-2004 11:45 AM

So... what's going on?

anleja 12-17-2004 10:36 AM

anyone feel like counting these up for the final results?

anleja 12-18-2004 10:42 PM

You know what? I actually just now counted the results, then got to post #25 where the winners were already indicated. I feel dumb now. Why didn't anyone tell me?

Abbey Road wins, Revolver wins consolation round, in case you don't feel like scrolling up a page or so.
