Nirvana box set!

Anyone know anything about this? It's coming out late Nov. 3 CDs, 1 DVD, and a 60 page booklet written by Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth).

I heard it had a ton of previously unheard/unreleased material... now does this mean a song like "You Know You're Right" that was NEVER released before (even in demo.. I think there was a live version somewhere once upon a time), or one of the rare B-sides like MV, Curmudgeon, Spank Thru, etc..?

Derwood 10-25-2004 12:49 PM

I am still a proud owner of a live bootleg that has a song that Courtney Love claims has never been recorded....

Stompy 10-25-2004 01:28 PM

Oooh really, what song would that be?

Stompy 10-25-2004 01:37 PM

Holy shit... 68/81 songs that have never been issued!

Here is an official statement from the Geffen Records website concerning the Nirvana box: "Nirvana Box Set 'With the Lights Out' to Be Released November 23rd. Geffen/UMe Records is set to release a much anticipated 3 CD 1 DVD box set of Nirvana. 81 tracks are included on the box of which 68 have never been previously issued. Material for the CD's spans the band's entire history from their inception and includes demos, outtakes and live recordings. The DVD shows never seen before footage of the band at rehearsals, recording studios and live shows." According to Geffen, a detailed track listing will be available in the coming weeks.

holy shit! You just made my day. I cannot wait for this.

But You know You're Right came out with the greatests hits cd...

The bass player of Nirvana (sorry, I can't dredge up his name) has become active in Washington state politics, giving speeches, encouraging young voters to vote, and hinting that he will run for elective office.

Krist Noveselic (sp?)

Yeah I can't wait for the box set, it's been a long time coming, hopefully it comes to Australia soon enough.
I love Nirvana.

It's called "Talk to Me".

Here is the track listing: http://www.digitalnirvana.net/bootog...e=europe1991ls

Stompy 10-26-2004 07:04 AM

Oooh yeah I have that one.

I have pretty much every rare Nirvana song in existence (that I know of, anyway).

Ever hear the original version of Stay Away called "Pay to Play"? Or Breed when it was called Imodium? It's pretty interesting to see songs evolve over time from the original concept/demo to the final cut.

What I meant was, they say "68 have never been previously issued."

The songs like Spank Thru, MV, Curmudgeon, etc... have never REALLY been issued/released (aside from on a few singls and bootlegs of their demos), but are well known and fairly common to most fans of Nirvana.

Then there's a song like "You now you're right" that really NO ONE heard until, what... 2001? (or 2002?) Supposedly there's a live version floating around, but still, for the most part many people never heard it.

Just curious as to which type it will be. 68 never before heard songs a la "You know you're right" will be goddamn amazing... that'd be equivalent to, what, 5 new Nirvana CDs? If, however, they are songs that most people HAVE heard before (like the other songs I listed above), it'll still be kick ass and everything, but the songs won't be NEW NEW.

Ya'mean?

They recorded a TON of songs (studio quality) over their career, so I'm 100% positive there's songs stashed away to be used on the follow up to In Utero (wasn't "You know you're right" supposed to be on that CD?)

trickyy 10-26-2004 07:46 AM

talk to me is actually my favorite rare nirvana song. i downloaded a live version of it back when mp3s were only found on websites.

the live version of YKYR is called On the Mountain. slightly different lyrics.

i would be surprised if the 68 new songs did not include tracks off the outcesticide releases. but there will probably be a few completely new ones too.

still no tracklist that i can find, but here's this...

Quote:

While Universal is staying tightlipped about the actual tracklist of With the Lights Out, NME reports that the 68 unreleased tracks will consist of "rehearsals, outtakes, Kurt's home demos." Two years ago, Novoselic's description of the set as it then stood was, "KAOS radio 1987, BBC Peel Sessions, studio outtakes, sessions that we did in north Seattle, Rio de Janeiro, In Utero outtakes, live stuff..." In fact, Universal has not even elaborated on whether the 13 tracks of the box that have seen prior release will be a greatest-hits type thing, as so many box-set assemblers feel the need to include, or whether they are now out-of-print B-sides.

Meanwhile, the DVD will contain "unreleased band home movies, live footage, rehearsal footage and 20 full-length video performances," including footage of the band covering Terry Jacks' maudlin 70s tearjerker "Seasons in the Sun". A limited edition version of the box set that also includes video of a 1987 Nirvana concert had been rumored in the past, but it's no longer clear if that's happening (and if it's not, whether the show is being added to the DVD in the standard package).
cduniverse.com has it for $41.99
apparently shipping is $4.99 though

It's not that the rare tracks haven't been released, rather a)they've never been officially released, or b) these specific versions of the songs haven't been released. I'm sure most people that have bought a couple of Nirvana bootlegs will have heard almost all these songs. There are a couple that I've never even heard the titles of, but I'm guessing I'll recognize them once I hear them.

I used to have a huge Nirvana collection when I was younger. Unfortunately I sold off most of it on ebay to buy food in college :()

trickyy 11-01-2004 11:19 PM

most of the rare stuff was already on the outcesticide cds.
some rare stuff (bambi slaughter) isn't included here...i would be surprised if it was because it wasn't that good.
i'm not too excited about different versions of known songs. it's okay, not that special. most of the other tracks have been heard by any nirvana fan with a computer. i guess it's cool that there are a handful of "new" tracks there, provided it's not just an alternate name.

Stompy 11-02-2004 04:25 PM

Hm, I'm assuming the rare stuff will be cleaned up though.

The songs on outcesticide weren't very good quality, I don't imagine they'd just up and toss that exact copy on a box set.

DownwardSpiral 11-29-2004 03:00 AM

Picked up the new box set and I love it. Nirvana is my favorite band. I am very satified with the new box set. Good stuff, in my opinion.

skinnymofo 11-29-2004 10:11 PM

im curious for others who went and got this set at the midnight selling (if there were others).
they were supposed to issue a tshirt and poster for every box set atleast in seattle and the label didnt have enough of both for every box set so we got kind of screwed in getting at the exact time it was available for the extras and then only getting one or the other by having a raffle where you dont even get to choose? :(

YaWhateva 11-29-2004 10:45 PM

i was gonna buy it the day it came out, but I am pretty sure my girlfriend bought it for me for christmas so I have such a long long time to wait till I can finally hear it.

Esen 11-30-2004 03:01 AM

How much it going for anyways, Im sure its an arm and a leg
