Interpol - Antics
During my first listen of this album, I told my friend it was bland and boring and I had very little hope for it. Unfair, probably -- so...
I've given this record a few more chances since declaring it dreary as shit, just to be fair. Unfortunately, it's still really tiresome, and I don't imagine it'll be getting any more time in my player. I should clarify that this is the first Interpol record I've purchased, so maybe their last was better, but there is just zero on this CD that intrigues me. The guy's voice sounds really flat and plain, almsot like he's talking, or at the very most, humming -- the lyrics are bad right from the start (opening line is "when there's no where left to run / will there be room for one more song?", and don't improve much over the course of the other tracks. I didn't expect anything musically to really grab me when I bought it, but I've even been let down there. This reminds me of The Strokes' Room on Fire, in that songs 2 or 3 thru 8 or 9 just run together all dull and melody-less, and it's all over before anything significant has happened. Hal's score -- 4 out of 10 |
I agree with you much to the disappointment of most of my friends

I never dug on the Interpol. Nasal, bland and droning.
|
The first album, people pretty much lost their shit over it. I saw them at Slim's in San Francisco... [sold-out shot... had to troll outside for tix] and I can say they were fucking tight live. Very much like some kind of machine. I've only heard a little of this latest album, and it doesn't sound much like the first album. The first album was like one consistent theme, I think it's impressive they were able to break out of that. People either like them, or accuse them of sounding like Joy Division... do people still accuse them of that?
|
I can definitely see a JD influence even on the latest album, in the sense that not a lot is going on and there's nothing worth paying attention to. I was never huge on Joy Division, but at least they were relatively new for their time.
I'm still giving strong consideration to picking up Interpol's first album, just because I've heard it's so much better... I buy too many CD's based on hear'say, but I'm always so happy when I find a good one. |
Interpol's first CD was much better. The songs Obstacle 1, Obstacle 2, Say Hello To The Angels, and PDA on Turn On The Bright Lights are all better then anything on Antics
|
i really liked their first album too. it actually grew on me.
antics has not. i even stopped listening to it for weeks and came back (i got it leaked a while back). nothing. there are a few decent songs, but the album is missing something in several places. |
I really, really liked their first album. I too am a bit underwhelmed by this one, though. Maybe their next one will be better...

I'm not sure if it's just me getting old but all there are a lot of these neo-cover bands out there - Interpol, Hot Hot Heat, The Strokes, The Rapture, etc...
The lyrics are new, and you can't really place the music, but it's still a cover. Now that being said, most of the bands execute things well, and they're certainly doing better than the dinosaur bands out there that keep plugging along. Heck, I think there are at least four bands putting out new Cure material right now, and I think the Cure is probably the worst of the lot. ;) |
I will have to be the one to disagree with other comments on this post. I think the second album is brilliant. The first album was very brilliant and this was a great follow-up. Their first cd remains in my car disc changer since I bought it over a year ago and get's heavy play. Good thing we don't carpull.

It's a wonderful album.
And a wonderful live show. |
Don't get me wrong, it is a wonderful album. But all of these magazines hyped it up in my mind of the greatest cd of the past few years.
In my whole hearted opinion, the last Interpol album slaughters this one. |
I am rather disapointed about their new album but hey it's hard to folllow up something like their last one. It isn't bad, it's just not great.
|
Interpol is one of the few bands that I genuinely hate
|
At first I thought it sounded like REM but now I realise it sounds nothing like REM
