Recommend a song to the community.
Leave a one-song recommendation. If you love all of the songs done by a particular band, pick the one song that you think will get a listener hooked on their music. Try to make it something that not everyone has probably heard, but it's ok if it's popular, just as long as YOU like it. Describe the song as much as you can (style, speed, enjoyable parts, etc). Make it a general rule to not post another recommendation until, say, at least 5 other people have made one after yours. That way we can keep this thread as a community effort rather than have one person expressing his/her own opinions. Most important of all: POST THE SONG EVEN IF YOU THINK NO ONE WILL LIKE IT! This is your chance to express YOUR choice in music, and to lend those in search of new music a helping hand. Thanks in advance for participating!
Here's my first recommendation: "I Spit On Your Grave" by Sinergy. This song starts off fast from the beginning. The singing is hair band-ish, but the guitar work is phenomenal. Make sure you listen during the guitar solos and you'll see what I mean. |
ooooo excellent idea COA!
I'm gonna have to get back to you on this though one since there are so many songs I'd like to recommend. I have to give it some thought before I make up my mind :) |
"Big Sky/Baddest of the Bad" by Reverend Horton Heat. "Big Sky" is an instrumental intro for "Baddest of the Bad", so they are pretty much one song.
Shit kicking, nitro burning rockabilly on speed! |
My Sweetest Pain - Persephone
|
great thread idea--and difficult to respond to.
john coltrane: africa from africa brass get the complete sessions reissue--there are 3 version of the track on it, each quite different from the others. throughout, eric dolphy's arrangements are excellent--all low brass, really interesting ways of handling such a horn section. of the 3 versions of "africa" my favorite is the second--the mid-tempo version during the course of which elvin jones just explodes on drums. gives you a really good idea of what the talk was all about on his drumming. and it is astonishing. excellent stuff. play it loud, of course. |
"Cupid" performed by Sam Cooke. His voice is as smooth as any velvet, and he stays slightly behind the beat all the way through the song. The tension created by his smooth voice and lazy-beat singing is juicy and marvelous.
I was once in a band that played this song, and I started to count it off to begin playing. I stopped and asked the drummer if I was counting it off too slow. He replied, "It's impossible to do Sam Cooke too slow." And THAT is the definition of "laid back." |
25 minutes to go (Johnny Cash Cover) - Pearl Jam
It may be hard( The Benyora Hall Album has it) to find but is a real good song check it out |
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - The High Party
They have better songs, but I do believe that this is their catchiest. Available for download here: http://www.epitonic.com/artists/tedleopharmacists.html |
People in this forum may get tired of me saying it, but they're so underappreciated that it isn't even funny:
Project 86 - The Spy Hunter You can get a stream on the media player @ http://www.pillartour.com/ It is really hard to describe this song. It's like a complete bombardment of your brain through your ears. Hard guitars. It makes your head spin. It is extremely energetic. It is poetic. It is insane. |
"Hey Sister" by Creeper Lagoon
Super catchy "alternative rock" tune. Great guitar hook opening (with nice use of stereo effect for overlaid guitar parts). Fun chorus with some call and response action. Pleasing, accessible alt rock. |
Cowboys from Hell - Pantera
I'm not even much of a Pantera fan, but so far, everyone who I've had listen to the song that is a metal fan loves it. It's fast, heavy, and the guitar on it is incredible. |
Gillian Welch- Look At Miss Ohio.
|
Alrighty then,
Blue Öyster Cult - Perfect Water. Straightforward rock and roll, with Buck Dharma dealing some particularly tasty riffs. The twist, of course, is that it has a peculiar set of lyrics, something between suicide by drowning, dreaming about being a mermaid, and a lust for professional oceanographers. It's not their weirdest, nor their rockinest, nor their most obscure, but it is some of all and catchy without being too catchy. (I'll most definitely recommend other songs later.) |
Good one spectre, the only other song I care from them is the cover of Cat Scratch Fever. Really don't know what to suggest unless some of you like Punk rock, then check out Dropkick Murphy's "Walk Away" or any other song by them for that matter.
|
Johnny 9 - Zac Maloy Band(former lead singer of the Nixons)
|
I'm gonna have to recomend dj shadow - blood on the motorway, can't get enough of this song, really check it out if oyu like insturmental music
|
Black Betty - Spiderbait
If you like this song, and I've noticed its been getting really popular lately, you'll probly like the rest of their stuff. |
Tilt-a-whirl by Masters of Reality....
|
Side three of Rush's second live album, Exit...Stage Left (the double album, I don't have it on cd yet) has three songs: Broon's Bane, The Trees, and Xanadu all run together so it sounds like one really long, cool song. I don't smoke weed anymore, nor do I advocate its use, however, if you're gonna get high anyway...fuckin' A.
I used to hate live albums until I did the "sound guy" job for a local cover band. Since then I tend to judge musicians by how they sound live. Anybody can sound great in a studio with overdubs and many, many tries to get it right. |
Spain- Bobby Mc Ferrin and Chick Corea
If you have only heard "Dont worry be happy" you havent really heard the talent that is Bobby Mc Ferrin. He is frankly a genius and highly underrated... |

My own thoughts - get a couple of "Dumb Things" or "Every F#$%ing city" by Paul Kelly - he is a real poet / storyteller :) |
The Romanza from Vaughan Williams 5th symphony (The London Symphony Orchestra directed by Bryden Thomson)
Flowing beatiful music with various themes that comes and goes..and then towards the end a handful of notes played by a horn. Dont know why, but the weird solitude of these notes chokes me up every time :) This piece made me appreciate horns and trumpets a whole lot more. |
'Fox in the Snow' - Belle and Sebastian
Sublime |
I'm lovin' the response for this thread! Awesome! Keep it up! :)
Here's my second recommendation: "Regulate" by Nate Dogg and Warren G. This is by far my favorite rap song ever. Sure, it's gangsta rap, but the beat to it, along with the way they rap to it is just amazing. Not to mention it reminds me of the "good ol' days" when gangsta rap was in. |
Spider Web by Joan Osborne. But this song is great, it's medium paced and soulful. She's singing about Ray Charles, so it's kind of a tribute to The Man, and she just belts it out in a way that Ray would be proud.
(Note: the link just goes the stupid 30 second preview on Amazon.com) |
My Favorite Thing - Silverchair (real media sample)
One of the prettiest songs I've ever heard. Ironically enough it gets commonly mistaken for a love song when in truth it's more like a love song about death and his love of it. You'd never know it by just hearing it though because the mood of the whole song is so soft and sweet. It's absolutely beautiful to hear. The whole freakin album is full of great songs. This one imparticualar is slow, soft, lots of orchestral arrangements, I think 2 or 3 part vocal harmonies all throughout out the background during the chorus. The sounds of it are just very soothing and blend together to make a very pleasing sound. Asta!! |

In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3 by Coheed and Cambria
This song in particular, although I love their albums too. Their albums work together to tell a story, although parts of it have yet to be figured out by anyone. Give them a listen. |
Tool - Pushit (salival album version)
So many emotions, intense lyrics and amazing vocals set this song apart from all others. It is an experience, a rather long song too. Enjoy )) |
Hmmm.....
My recommendation is "Waterfall" - Jimi Hendrix This is an extremely rare (at least I think it is) song. Amazing wall of sound from a three-piece band. As usual, Jimi's guitar work is innovative and well-styled. When you close your eyes, the music vibrates through you and becomes highly visual (without the aid of drugs by the way). A thoughtful arrangement utilizing the electrifying skills of Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell ( I think, but not sure - sounds like it though) Jimi's lyrics are mature and poetic - Comparisons can be drawn to the poets from the romantic era. Find this song anyway you can. Download if you have to. It doesn't matter what genre of music you like, everyone should be able to enjoy this song. |
I really love Godspeed you black emperor's lift your skinny fist like an antena straight to heaven- wonderful instrumental
|
Where Is My Mind? - The Pixies
|
ive got to pick two songs.
close to the edge by yes. concerto#3 by rachmoninoff |
A classic that never grows old:
"I Love You" by Climax Blues Band |
Lookin' Out My Backdoor - CCR
|
good recommendation powerclown...
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straights an infectious beat with guitar solos second to none thanks to good ol' Mark Knopfler |
How totally foul to make us pick just a single song. Hmmmm.....
Let's go with "What's Left of the Flag" by Flogging Molly. And remember to drink a Guinness when you play it, damn it! |
I gotta say 'Cicatriz' by the Mars Volta. Amazing song, truly something everyone needs to hear. It's almost just one big crazy jam, with awesome bass lines, catchy chorus, and huge fantastic solos. Awesome.
|
afi-silver and cold
a great song that is gsad and happy at the same time! |

I'll reccomend: Love and some verses by Iron and Wine. I discovered that on on an iTunes mix this morning. Pretty music. |
Damn, this is tough...
Check out "Water From the Same Source" by Rachel's. I think that song does a good job of encompassing what the ensemble is all about. If you like classical or instrumental music you'll probably like Rachel's a lot. |
Get Up Kids - The Company Dime
Somewhat chilled-out and laid back... the chorus will stay stuck in your head for hours |
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes - I Believe I Can Fly
The Gimmes offer an excellent cover of R. Kelly's song, "I Believe I Can Fly". Great tempo, excellent guitar work, and unique vocals. While you're at it, listen to every album they've ever released. You'll love 'em. |
Disturbed - Down with the sickness
Thins song is the best metal song i've heard in years. I especialy like the end where he yell at is mother. |
Quote:

Feel Like Drinkin' Today - Mike Graham

The Day the World Turned Day-Glo - X-Ray Spex
|
mum: we have a map of the piano
excellent track--lovely layered sound and my bloody valentine-ish vocal stylings. or just mbv's loveless. one of the great recordings of the 1990s. |
Quote:
(at least that's the song I think you're talking about.) My choice would be Trieulogy, by KAK. A really interesting late-60s psychedelic song that will make you think! Bingle |
Mercy Seat-Johnny Cash (covering Nick Cave)
|
If you want to hear some really freakin talented guys sing, check out...
The Band - We Can Talk ... Dead Richard Manuel for President! |
Lemon Jelly - A Tune for Jack
|
Interpol
Interpol's "precipitate" - not sure if it's on either of their two major releases but you can find it on the web somewhere. they have to be the biggest underrated band around today. Period.
|
Nas
Black Zombie from Lost Tapes The song encapsultes the economic determinism facing inner city society with lyrical fury. |
"fake a smile" by radford
www.radfordmusic.net seriously check this out its a beautiful song by one of the more underrated alt. bands around |
Two Step by the Dave Matthews Band.
You can listen to the studio version if you wish and get some of it but the beauty of this song, like most DMB music, is live. There are pretty good version of it on both Live from Red Rocks and Listener Supported which are offical live releases from DMB. If you are more adventurous and know your way around the bootleg scene I would recommend getting DMB's concert in Montreal from 2002 where they do a 22 minute version with special guests Bella Fleck and the Flecktones. |
"Bad Town" by Operation Ivy
Has a simple yet enjoyable guitar riff throughout the song, and the sax playing actually goes with the music. It's such a surprise to me because the punk band I used to play in tried its hand with a sax player and it sounded horrible. |
"Falling" / "The Perfect Element" - Pain of Salvation. Falling is an amazing (not amazing like a million notes, but more musically/emotionally moving) guitar solo intro to the track. Conecpt albums rule
|
Tom Waits "Coney Island Baby"

For a direct link to the song itself, click: http://abhillz.home.mchsi.com/berserktrailer.mp3 The best part to me is around 2:08, where it suddenly picks up again. The song sounds completely unapologetic and it does not take a long time to pick up momentum, plus it goes damn well with the game trailer. When I listen to the song alone, it actually invokes images in my head of the manga (I've read most of it). |
spreadin' the crem(as in Crem de la Crem)
to an' fro.... "Life on a Chain" by Pete Yorn "Gin and Juice" by...The Gourds |
erm...to many to pick, try this one ( am listenin to it now )
kasabian ~ reason for treason tis good :) great album its from too |
I'll see a Gillian Welch (!) reference and raise a Lucinda Williams, "I Think I Lost It."
|
Try something fun and different..."Captain America" by moe.
|
"Don't Step On The Grass, Sam" by Gov't Mule
|
"Accused of stealing" by The Delgados, but everything they do is perfect.
|
Human Drama - "This Tangled Web" After 15 years as a band with a rabid but small cult following, HD is playing their farewell show this December 10th in Los Angeles. A great loss to anyone who loves good music. If I could only take one of my 1000+ CDs with me for the rest of my life, it'd be HD's "The World Inside".
|
Lately I've been playing the hell out of "Smoking a Minor" by Officer May. Such a grinding rising cresendo. The lyrics don't even kick in until 3 minutes in. Kick-ass song.
|
Devin Townsend - Earth Day. Off the Terria album.
If you like epic, heavy mind-blowing songs, you'll love this one. Favorite song by any performer ever. |
Sweet, nobody's said it yet...
Sheep Go To Heaven - Cake |
Common - Retrospect For Life
One of the single best hip-hop songs I've ever heard in my life. Asta!! |
Barber, "Adagio" for strings. It's incredible.
