car stereo competitors?
I was wondering if there are any stereo competitors in the forum. Local shows, or even national level competitors.
I used to compete locally, my personal best being a 151db with an Explorer equiped with 2 15"s and 4 10's, and that was tuned more for sound quality. |
I never understand why you guys do that, Is it even possible to sit in the car at 151db? Dont take offence, If you wanna fit your car with a mountain of speakers, If it boils yer kettle thats great but I just dont see the sence, Loud is good, Nosebleed loud is not good. As far as I see it.
Please explain, coz Im genuinely curious. Thanks. |
I do it mainly as a hobby. Some work under the hood, and others tear the entire interiors apart to make room for speakers, either for loudness, or for sound quality. I just really enjoy fabricating the enclosures for the subs and amplifiers, and making it look semi-factory looking(or completely not factory looking for shows). It's just something that some find appealing.
As for sitting inside while it's playing, you have to remember that the 151db was measured as a 'peak' reading, I wasn't driving around listening to it that loud all the time,(just most of the time). Usually whoever is holding the stereo competition will provide earphones or something. I used to always bring my own. I'll see if I can find my scale of references for decibals. A gunshot is something like 150 or so, and being at the launch site of a space shuttle is like 200 or so!! But keep in mind that every 2 decibals is the equivelent of doubling the sound. Hopefully I have provided some insite, I'll post more. |

I have one JL Audio 12W7 on a JL 500/1 in a slot ported box, tuned for SQ and I've hit 145 before. The box is soon to hold 2 12W7's and the amps are being swapped out for 1000/1's. Front stage is JL XR653CS. |
its all in the box...i personally use my car as the port and the box as the sealed...making for a sharp loud sound...while you ported box guys are more loud and spread bass then anything... :(
You don't have the fun of blasting plastic pieces out of place which hold your trunk carpet together...fun stuff! |
In other words...when listening to metal...i go THUD THUD THUD for the Kick while ports go THUNNN THUNN THUNNN
|
I don't think that I'm fallowing, atomic pinkie. do you mean opening a window as the 'port', or did you actually 'port' your rear deck(under the rear window)??
I couldn't agree with you more as to the sound reproduction of sealed boxes. I've got 4 10's in a sealed box, and it pounds. And as for shaking stuff apart, hmmmmmm, let's see, there was the rearview mirror, the vent shades, the door speakers, and countless little nic-nacs from the interior. :) Please do post back with more on how your car is the port. Thanks. |

One word for deadoning cars DYNOMAT !!!!!! They have several variations of it, and it all works wonders. Rather pricey, but well worth the investment.
|
Me and my friend compete....we just got his car ready for competitions this spring :) and then hopefully my system will be finished by next year too :)............for the best in sound dampening go to www.partsexpress.com they have some really nice stuff that is dirt cheap compared to dynamat and yes it does just as good as a job...and it will make your radio louder.
