The Official VMA 2004 Discussion
What does everyone think so far? We're at the best rap video so far, and I'm liking it this year so far.
I also saw a Halo 2 advertisement out of the corner of my eye! yay! |
Oh, and what was up with Shaq? I mean, common, its just a basketball player. Everyone was treating him like a god or something. All I could think about was Aries Spears' (MadTV) impression the whole time, lol.
|
I hate the VMAs. I tuned in for a second to hear Hoobastank and immediately wanted to destory something.
I love how the singer of Hoobastank (and other bands like it) will get to a high part in a song and instead of trying to sing it, he acts like people want to hear the crowd sing it by extending the microphone and saying YEEEAHH! really loud... lol |
I abhor the VMA's and the heresy they stand for. Rather have a colonoscopy.
|
Ok, lets try this. If you're just going to put the VMA's down, push your back button.

Seriously people, if you're going to just put the VMA's down, then shut up. Some of us actually like it.
|
Honestly though they have "Best Rap Video" and "Best Hip-Hop Video" and it's nothing but rappers as nominees. It's bullshit....they just invented another catagory so they can give the same award to 2 different people. The grammy's have done the same shit. These fuckin shows are bought....they already know that this year Kanye, Outkast, and Jay Z all needed to get awards for something. So they made up awards for all of them. I mean don't get me wrong I loved seeing Jet (only Jet), and Alicia with Stevie & Lenny...that was great. The fact that The Darkness didn't get shit tonight really fuckin pisses me off though. They deserved something...they're too good for that bullshit.

the whole SHAQ thing was more of a MIAMI-based fan appreciation thing...ever since the heat brought him over. this belongs in the sports page maybe, but i'm looking forward to seeing what the big guy will do, even though i suspect the answer will be NOTHING
|
Uhhhhhhhh, BACK!
|
i wouldnt mind the VMAs, if, that is, MTV actually appreciated proper music
|
I watch music award shows whenever I can. For the same reason that I read the news and stay informed about the rest of the things that are going on around me.
Even if you aren't a huge fan of pop music, I think it's important to be informed about it, and MTV, VH1, MMVAs, these award shows are big parts of the pop music world. Be as indie as you want, but being media savvy, and music savvy are definitely a good thing. I didn't see the whole thing to be honest, I missed quite a bit of it, so I don't know how well I can discuss it. I just wanted to get in here and put up some sort of rebuttle to the "mtv stinks" tidal wave. Admittedly, most of the music I enjoy doesn't quite make it to MTV or Muchmusic, but all this hate is dangerous. Come on now, where would we be without ludacris, christina, et all? I haven't had much luck chatting up any girls at clubs to the sound track of ambient, down tempo trip hop :D but when "diirrrty" comes on... well we have a winner. |
^ My face added to my humor and my wit are what get me girls. Not a Ludacris song. I don't need them. I agree though...if you wanna dance with em...it's pretty hard to except any substitutes. I usually just ignore the music (to an extent) and dance all I need to do before she turns around...after that you practically just have to stand there.

Its nothing more than a hip-hop/rap festival anymore. And not having a EmCee didnt help.
Used to be a good watch back when bands would actually play, and not have a rapper with half of thier entourage on-stage with em. |
Please keep the posts in here to a "discussion", not just random pot-shots at MTV or the VMA's or whatever. Some people actually would like a serious conversation to occur, not just "MTV sucks!" -Submit-.
Ok? Ok. Thanks. |
While I understand those of you who don't like MTV (for those of you who don't know it's my current employer for 7 years now) that's fine. I don't like lots of the shows that we put on, but I know the demographic that they are targeting and it's not me and my peers, but those who are 14-26 in it's widest range and 14-22 in it's narrowest and probably more accurate range.
I didn't watch the VMA's this year because I totally forgot since it was held in Miami instead of Radio City. All my coworkers flew down to Miami 2-4 weeks ago so it's been really quiet on my floor. Please remember this is a discussion, saying that something sucks isn't a discussion but a conversation ender. |
With the VMAs you know what to expect going into it. I enjoy watching it for the technical difficulties (no sound this year) that always seem to plague it. Some of the performers do a very good job and put on a great show even if I am not a regular fan of theirs. I do think that MTV has been moving away from rock music for the last 5 years or so but their is no denying the audience draw for the pop/hip-hop/rap artists.
Besides, where else are you going to see Bruce Willis dancing with Sean Combs? |

Cynthetiq, I guess I haven't been paying enough attention, but I had no idea you worked for MTV.
I'm always interested in the media and the industry around it. Just curious, what does "Manager Production Systems" mean, and what do you do? |
I post lots of stuff in my journal (when they return you'll be able to read more...) and I also post in the Mass Media Mind Control Thread about the industry and what I witness and also contribute to.
|
I can't believe Yellowcard beat Modest Mouse for the MTV2 award. What the fuck.
|
Why WOULDN'T Yellowcard win? It's not like the only thing seperating them from every other mainstream band is a single violin.

okay, i'm late =P
i'm new here the vma's usually have a host right? i thought it was kinda weird that show didn't have a host. i was thinkin' maybe it gave the award winners more time to say 'thank you' or whatever when they received their awards, because it seemed to me some of them were up there for a while =P hoobastank sounded really off. it also seemed like they cut their time short, since it took the next band a few seconds to start up. i've also heard that the show seemed to be less scandalous than previous shows. no nearly naked brittney, girls kissing, lil kim's breast fondle (were those all from vma's?) anyone think that might be related to the janet incident? |
