Best Driving Music

I'm going on a small road trip in a little while and it made me think of what music I should bring with me. So I wanted to know what everyone here listens to when they're driving. What makes you want to drive really fast or keeps you awake at night? What are some of the best albums to play with the windows down?

A few of my choices are:
Springsteen- Born to Run
Minor Threat
The Clash- London Calling (Great album with lots of different sounds, plus it's really long.)

anleja 08-09-2004 08:27 AM

Reverend Horton Heat "Big Sky/Baddest of the Bad."

They are two songs, but they are meant to be heard together. I think it is excellent music to speed to.

soopafreek 08-10-2004 11:32 AM

get the theme to the tim burton "batman", the one composed by danny elfman. while you're driving, i swear, it'll make you feel invincible.

Cynthetiq 08-10-2004 01:05 PM

since I'm always in traffic here in NYC...someone recently turned me onto Ludacris' Move Bitch...

Move bitch, get out the way
Get out the way bitch, get out the way
Move bitch, get out the way
Get out the way bitch, get out the way

May I also suggest "Bad Habit" by Offspring:

"Drivers are rude
Such attitudes
But when I show my piece
Complaints cease
Something's odd
I feel like I'm God
You stupid dumbshit goddam MOTHERFUCKER!"

Personally, I like EBM, Techno, and Industrial when i'm driving.

Good beats, lots of bass, etc. Works for me :)

Any Reverend Horton Heat is good for speed. We are talking about the drug right?

kalashnikov 08-10-2004 07:54 PM

You gotta include "Radar Love" by Golden Earing. It's made to be played while driving.

Blonddie 08-10-2004 08:50 PM

I always have the urge to crank the volume to Kenny Loggins song....'Highway to the Danger Zone'. (from Top Gun)

Warning: May make you exceed the speed limit!

suesman 08-11-2004 02:58 AM

Anything by Rush suite me just fine.

divagrrrl 08-12-2004 06:31 AM

"karma" from Delirium.

Soundtrack to "Queen of the Damned."

Sargeman 08-12-2004 07:10 AM

I've always thought that Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" was the ultimate, driving at night while smoking a cigarette, driving song.

SiN 08-12-2004 12:57 PM

Lost Highway soundtrack is a good one. :)

dunkelhelmut 08-12-2004 09:39 PM

Techno is pretty good for driving at night. Paul Oakenfold's Tranceport CD is pretty basic, but gets the job done.

Sometimes if I'm cruising down the freeways here in ATL late at night, I'll break out the trance.

All of this music will keep you awake, but it also will probably want to make you drive faster too, so watch that speed.

Church 08-12-2004 10:35 PM

I've actually heard somewhere that they did and study, and found the most dangerous song to drive to is Ride of the Valkyries. I think they found it causes the driver to feel indestructible or something like that.

Its fun! lol

jordan_is_god 09-05-2004 08:44 PM

Wagner - Ride of the Valkryies. Very loudly with the windows down.

spindles 09-05-2004 09:36 PM

Motely Crue - kickstart my heart - you can't not speed :)

whocarz 09-07-2004 10:00 PM

Back when it was legal for me to drive, I would mainly listen to Industrial, extremely loud, with the windows down. I would FORCE my music on other people. The side effect of this, of course is that I would speed all the time. And thus why I cannot drive anymore.

NoLa 09-11-2004 08:46 PM

Lost in Translation (soundtrack) recommended for scenic driving, especially on a cloudy day.

pan6467 09-12-2004 02:09 AM

Thorogood.... George....

Bad to the Bone
No Particular Place to Go
One Bourbon, One Whiskey, One Beer

and the only Sammy Hagar song worth listening to:

I Can't Drive...... Sixtyyyyyy Five :D

when driving down a highway ain't nothing better except maybe Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild... but that is so cliche :hmm:

You got your license permanently revoked for speeding? How many times did you get caught?

Tophat665 09-12-2004 05:43 AM

Rush - Red Barchetta
Rob Zombie - Dragula
Thomas Dolby - Keys to her Ferrari
Satch - Train of Angels

Counting Crows - Rain King: This one works for me, but not may others

For late night long distance: STP - Interstate Love Song

RiskBreaker10k 09-12-2004 06:07 AM

Slayer
The Haunted
Blind Guardian

"My Maserati does 185
I lost my liscense now I don't drive....

Life's been good to me so far...."

Reminded me of the great song by Joe Walsh.

Scorps 09-12-2004 09:10 AM

Limp Bizkit - Rollin'

good for when you want to drive fast...but anything with lots of bass for me....love to give my subs a good work out

Nancy 09-12-2004 09:56 AM

Hooverphonic's A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular album keeps me awake ;)

Paradise Lost 09-12-2004 10:56 AM

Bob Seger, period. There is no other driving music, it's all a lie.

Rodney 09-12-2004 12:38 PM

Any classic Stones album should do.

If you want to be fairly mellow but stay awake late at night, think Motown. Martha Reeves, Smokey Robinson, Supremes, Marvin Gaye, all those. They're not that intense, but they've definitely got the beat and are good to sing along with.

Kirgar 09-12-2004 01:03 PM

the queen of the damned soundtrack, Korn and Disturbed when your want to drive fast.
And if you feel a little down, Nickelback (not the latest album, The Long Road) and The Poets of the Fall-Late Goodbye

irateplatypus 09-12-2004 01:04 PM

1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
Mr. E's Beautiful Blues - Eels
Zion - Fluke
Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz
Miss You - Rolling Stones
Einstein on a Beach - Counting Crows

ANY song off Weezer's blue album.

Shpoop 09-12-2004 07:28 PM

the best driving song ever is Sky, by Ra

download it!!

rjd2 09-12-2004 07:33 PM

I'm going to have to be stereotypical and go with AC/DC - highway to hell, it's personaly my favourite driving song.

FoolThemAll 09-12-2004 09:06 PM

Stone Temple Pilots - Interstate Love Song. By far.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Runnin' Down a Dream. Obligatory.
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - 2nd Ave., 11 am. Oh yes.

two 10 inch 600 watt (each) subs will keep you awake :D

saut 09-13-2004 08:33 AM

In addition to Ride of the Valkryies, Bohemian Rhapsody is always a good one (especially with friends).

mb99usa 09-13-2004 08:38 AM

I always find it entirely depends on my mood and the traffic I'm in.

Good mood and clear roads something heavy with a lot of guitar - get the blood pumping and th etruck moving.

So/so - bad mood or lots of traffic and I prefer smooth jazz or classical - keeps me calmer and allows for more behaved driving in those situations.

irateplatypus 09-15-2004 08:52 AM

oh gosh...

i can't believe i forgot "everlong" by the foo fighters.

::hangs head in shame::

ultra_agent9 09-15-2004 10:41 AM

There are plenty of good driving tunes out there, each has a time and place.

More than a decade ago, I remember I was in the car while my dad was driving and the song "In the Mood" by Robert Plant came on (Phil Collins plays the drums). It totally suited the moment, and I recall we both stopped talking to listen to the song.

It still has a special place in my heart and I think it makes a beautiful late night driving song. That, and another song off the same album called "Big Log."

MageB420666 09-15-2004 11:04 AM

Linkin Park - Meteora
Gladiator Soundtrack
Loreena McKinnet
Weird Al

dmt767s 09-16-2004 08:39 PM

I saw Radar Love and anything from Weezer's Blue album listed. Both fine choices, but if you want the ultimate road trip song, it has to be Open Road Song by Eve 6. It is always the first cd in on any road trip.

StickODynomite 09-16-2004 09:17 PM

Anything but techno.
(I personally like 112, Alicia Keys, some 80's .. the list goes on)

Shizukana 09-16-2004 09:59 PM

I made a cruising CD that was specifically made for my friend and I to listen to on our way down and back from Houston. We were headed there for a small Mustang meet, and we didn't know if there would be any racing involved but wanted a high-energy CD to cruise with - here's what we put on there, but this isn't in order of tracklisting, it's just in alpha order, as I can't find the actual CD at the moment.

Deftones - My Own Summer
Disturbed - Stupify, Voices
Drowning Pool - Bodies, Tear Away
Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff, Eat You Alive
Linkin Park - A Place for My Head, One Step Closer
Metallica - Seek and Destroy, Stone Cold Crazy
Pearl Jam - Evenflow (Live from Washington DC, 7 minutes long!)
Mudvayne - Dig
Primer 55 - Loose
Staind - Spleen, Mudshovel
White Zombie - More Human Than Human
We also threw some Strongbad songs on there as interludes of sorts.

Other than those... I do enjoy Meteora and Hybrid Theory as cruising music but the cds are way too short for long trips, so I consolidated them onto one cd, much better!

I enjoy live Pearl Jam as well... Rearviewmirror is a good driving song.

I second the vote for STP's Interstate Love Song as well. The main three bands that I listen to in the car are PJ, Linkin Park, and Staind though... with the occasional Hendrix, Faith No More, or 311 thrown in there.

Unbelievably great driving album.
