$100 to blow on iTunes - help expand my music knowledge
I'm gonna be getting a fat paycheck next week and have decided to invest $100 of it and expand my musical horizons. What should I download from iTunes?
I'm particularry interested in music before the mid '80's. Thanks for your suggestions! EDIT: I'm really into blues! |

download some Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. If I could go back in time to witness any musical event it would be the 1969 Woodstock festival. Holy crap those performers were incredible.

If you're REALLY into Blues, you need to go old school:
Muddy Waters Robert Johnson (don't bother if you are an audiophile - these recordings are almost 100 years old now and sound like crap. but if you really want to understand blues, you have to listen to the musicianship of this man) Bo Diddley Howlin' Wolf etc etc If you want to explore your horizons a bit, there's a whole universe of stuff to try out: Frank Sinatra - when he was young and cool Glen Miller - big band... amazing stuff if you can stop yourself from thinking of scenes from modern movies that use him to set the mood of the 30s and 40s. The Andrews Sisters - same story Beatles, Beatles and more Beatles - if you don't have them already Stones, Stones and more Stones - same Brian Eno - weird atmospherics David Bowie - the Ziggy Stardust album Do you like Jazz? If so, try some Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Coltrane, etc (I'd ask the true jazz-heads to add to this b/c I don't really know what I am talking about) That was sort of a shotgun approach.... |

Yeah I'd recomend Yes too. They are an absolutely fantastic band. Steve Howe...definitely one of the most innovative guitarists I've ever heard. Man could probably play anything. Jon Anderson has a really great voice. Hey you have an I-Tunes......I also have an I-Tunes don't they have a sharing feature on the I-Tunes? Cause I can hook you up with Yes and Floyd if they do.

if you like blues you might also go in for some classic country (i promise it's not as smaltzy as the modern pop country) i suggest some hank williams sr, loretta lynn, george jones, and tammy wynette.

Don't forget old Bonnie Raitt. She's quite the slide player these days. The older stuff was less country and more just the groovy music of the times.

laurindo almeida - good jazz samba or bossa nova stuff out of brazil decades ago deltron 3030 - paranoid-intellectual hip hop rachmaninof - piano master amon tobin - exceptional electronica artist buckwheat zydeco - cajun accordianist/snazzy dresser/chronic smiler air - good french music of today's car commercials and movie soundtracks buena vista social club - aging cubans jam like its 1962 rjd2 - whitey from ohio brings the beats louis armstrong - that trumpet guy neutral milk hotel - lo-fi musical gem morphine mambo jazz club - probably not on i-tunes but worth a listen blues...i dunno...maybe albert king, albert collins, leadbelly, oliver sain, bessie smith, or fats waller (variety of styles) steve earle is kind of bluesy. he's on the butt rock stations but has some decent music. |

Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's 115th Dream (Awesome!) These 4 tracks off of Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland Album are absolutely amazing but they all go together so you might as well buy the album because other songs on it are great as well. If anything get 1983. 10. Rainy Day, Dream Away 11. 1983 ... (A Merman I Should Turn To Be) 12. Moon, Turn The Tides ... Gently Gently Away 13. Still Raining, Still Dreaming Cream - Strange Brew, Sunshine of Your Love H.P. Lovecraft - The White Ship, Wayfaring Stranger, That's the Bag I'm In The Who - Summertime Blues, My Generation, Magic Bus (The Who - Live at Leeds is considered one of the best live recordings ever and is highly recommended to get a feel for the energy these guys had) The Beatles have too many to list, the albums 1, Sgt. Pepper, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour, are all amazing. The Doors Best of Cd is worth getting but some select tracks worth getting People are Strange Break on through Crystal Ship Alabama Song Spanish Caravan Light My Fire Don't want to use up all your dough ;) hope you like any of these that you download! |
