Most Talented Drummer?

I'm gonna go ahead and throw Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater out there... simply because he's amazing beyond amazing

I'm getting into drums lately, who do you guys thing is ultimate?

Krycheck 07-17-2004 05:50 PM

Neal Peart from Rush. The hand speed of this guy is amazing. Just listen to Moving Pictures and you'll hear for yourself.

maleficent 07-17-2004 05:58 PM

Stewart Copeland/The Police

Then going back a ways -- Max Roach brilliant drummer who played along side jazz greats like Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker.... (and last I checked, he's still kicking drum butt)

teethman 07-17-2004 06:01 PM

that guy with one arm. hes awesome.

Ella 07-17-2004 06:12 PM

Ahhh, yes the Def Leppard dude. Gotta admire someone who can drum the ass off most others with only one arm.

A bunch of cool drummers in one place

Ace_O_Spades 07-17-2004 06:39 PM

66. Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)

^

What.... The.... Hell

This list just lost all credibility... what a fucking popularity contest

Manic_Skafe 07-17-2004 07:53 PM

I'm gonna have to go with Danny Carrey. In every band he's in the man just shines with talent. Amazing drummer and very diverse.

Polyphobic 07-17-2004 08:16 PM

I will second (actually third) Mike Portnoy.
Also, Tim Alexander is another of my favorites

PoweredByPorn 07-17-2004 09:01 PM

Raymond Herrera. Fear Factory.

Anyone who can be that precise at that speed deserves to be listed.

ultra_agent9 07-18-2004 03:22 AM

Simon Phillips is one of my favourites.

Also, Virgil Donati, Danney Carrey for monster drumming. And have always had a soft spot for Carter Beauford from DMB (listed TWICE on that list: 72 & 92) and Jimmy Chamberlain from the Smashing Pumpkins- I love his playing style and his sound.

There are a damn load of great drummers out there.

Ella 07-18-2004 03:33 AM

I'm gonna go with Anton Fier, Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth and Mo Tucker for being such a trailblazer.

That was a pretty worthless list, order wise, as are almost all Top X Y of Z lists. However, it was very helpful in constructing my own Top Ten.:

1 Neil Peart (Rush) (18)
1 Bill Bruford (Yes/King Crimson) (3)
1 Tim Alexander (Primus) (6)

2 Stewart Copeland (Police) (83)
2 Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Frank Zappa) (59)
2 Steve Gadd (Steely Dan) (N/A)

3 Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band) (72)
(He'll be one of the all time greats if the Smack doesn't kill him first.)

4 Mike Giles (King Crimson) (75)
4 Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones) (1)
4 Jeff Porcaro (Toto/Steely Dan) (82)
4 Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) (66)

5 Matt Cameron (Soundgarden) (49)
5 Chris Frantz (Talking Heads) (78)
5 Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience) (99)
5 Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) (80)

6 Clive Bunker (Jethro Tull) (73)
6 Mike Shrieve (Santana) (12)
6 John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) (45)
6 Keith Moon (Who) (15)

7 Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) (N/A)
7 William Calhoun (Living Colour) (11)
7 Ian Paice (Deep Purple) (74)

8 Lars Ulrich (Metallica) (87)
(Yeah, he's a little shit, but he sure can pound the fuck out of a drum kit)

9 Dave Abbruzzese (Pearl Jam) (69)

10 Rick Allen (Def Leppard) (N/A)
(Consolation prize/"What a trooper" Award. He's a much better drummer with one arm then he ever was with 2.)

Lots of ties there, but there's a lot of Drummers who only have style, not skill, to pick between them.

Q: What did the Drummer get on his S.A.T's?
A: Drool.

saut 07-18-2004 06:57 AM

Danny Carrey. But then again, I really really really like Tool.

roachboy 07-18-2004 08:26 AM

we are thinking about great dummers and no-one mentions jazz players?
how is this possible?

a small list of who i can remember while drinking coffee, in no order, and quite sure that there are other dummers out there i either cannot remember and/or have not heard yet who should be here:

elvin jones
eddie blackwell
andrew cyrille
don moye
jerome cooper
max roach
rashied ali
sunny murray
william hooker (check out his duet release with thurston moore)

chris cutler

and tony allen, who was the drumming (and musical) backbone for most early fela anikulapo kuti tracks--through the early 1980s---and is just a monster....

and why only trap drums?

i might object to considering drummer who play 4 (boom chak da boom boom chak), in general, except---
for more power and/or speed oriented material, the good dr. bindujeet of bindujeet partners llc is a veritable gateway to a legion of black metal drummers, the recordings of which simply leave one's tiny unsuspecting brain pummelled into a a kind of brakish froth...
maybe i will try to lure him over here.

waves a hat of meat.....

sailor 07-18-2004 09:51 AM

Carter Beauford is an incredibly talented drummer--one of the most talented out there at the moment. If he doesnt top my list, hes definitely in the top three.

Jesus Pimp 07-18-2004 10:13 AM

Danny Carey from TOOL hands down the best drummer ever.

wrongfullyaccuzd 07-18-2004 12:05 PM

Danny Carey from Tool is definitely one of the best.
Lars Ulrich, although a bitch, is good.

Also, I don't know his name, but the guy from 3 Doors Down is pretty good. I know you ordinarily wouldn't think of their drummer to be on a list that celebrates speed and stuff, but I went to one of their shows and he had a several minute long solo and it sounded awesome. So he's a sleeper at least.

Tusko 07-18-2004 06:28 PM

tomas haake, morgan agren

everyeone else pretty much pales in comparison to these two.

Yes! If you've ever seen him play in concert, you'd see as well. The guy is infuckingcredible.

powerclown 07-18-2004 07:19 PM

As roachboy mentioned, max roach.

jester 07-18-2004 07:38 PM

Bonham smokes all of these guys, except maybe Keith Moon.

Ringo is the coolest drummer ever, though. He always had the best shades and rings.

Jadedfox 07-18-2004 11:34 PM

Danny Carey from Tool and Martin Lopez from Opeth get my vote from best drummers.

--jaded

braindamage351 07-18-2004 11:41 PM

My favorite drummer is John Bonham. He's not the best drummer technically, but he makes the best beats. That and he's awesome with his feet.

Derwood 07-19-2004 05:22 AM

Scott Churilla
Josh Garza
Dave Grohl
Brain

If you don't know who some of these guys are, you better look em' up!

marz 07-19-2004 08:43 AM

My favorites would have to be, Bonham, Ulrich, and the dude from Rush.

I don't know about the current record, but with the previous records the drums were recorded live and then reproduced electronically, hence the precision.

I'm as big of a Metallica fan as possible but I've always thought of Lars as a average to above average drummer.

My two favorites are Gene Holgan (Death, Testament) and Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Testament, Fantomas). I didn't expect anyone to know about Gene but he is an amazing drummer. Extrememly fast and precise.

I thought that at least someone would have mentioned Lombardo. He's about as good as it gets.

pocon1 07-19-2004 09:20 AM

I'm seeing Rush in a couple of weeks, have to go with good old Neal.

Very True. I also like Vinnie Paul, & I just saw Rush a couple of weeks ago, and Peart is Bad Ass.

roachboy 07-19-2004 09:57 AM

i think i saw lombardo with john zorn, fred frith and bill laswell.
if that was him, he is a headfuck live.
and the other players almost had to carry him offstage after the gig.
it was impressive all the way around.

Stompy 07-19-2004 10:17 AM

Danny Carey is the Les Claypool of drummers.

You can't mention "the best" and leave him out!

John Bonham is powerful too.

Aborted 07-19-2004 12:36 PM

I can't comment on who's best in terms of technicality and creativity because I know precious little about drumming, but the drummer with the biggest "uuuuuuuuuuuuh(confused-at-how-incredibly-quick-and-confusing-the-drums-are-smiley)" factor, for me, has to be Brann Dailor from Mastodon.

KWSN 07-19-2004 01:06 PM

Tjoldav, Dimmu Borgir

The dude from Opeth (i'm bad at names)

The dude from Nile (see above)

Stewart Copeland

Mike Portnoy

and whoever plays for Morbid Angel

R.I.P. John Henry Bonham.......aka Bonzo;)

i'm also a fan of stewart copeland and neil peart.

Neal Peart from Rush hands down. Just saw them in Las Vegas this past weekend. I must say by far the most talented drummer out there.

jaypc2 07-20-2004 04:34 PM

Neal Peart from rush he's the best freaking drummer ever and hes been around for ever i mean this guy has speed cordination hes got everything hes amazing defiently the best drummer of all times

Booray 07-20-2004 05:32 PM

Some great ones that I don't believe have been mentioned:

Matt Abts (Gov't Mule)
Alan Evans (Soulive)
Stanton Moore (Galactic)

My favorite:
Neil Peart (if you're a fan, you ought to pick up Ghost Rider, his book about his long motorcycle trip where he attempted to heal after losing his wife and daughter)

rockzilla 07-20-2004 05:35 PM

I'll throw in votes for Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland. Peart because he shatters the 'Stupid Drummer' stereotype, and Copeland because he hates Sting more than I do.
Oh yeah, Neil Peart's book is called 'The Masked Rider'

grumpyolddude 07-20-2004 07:54 PM

Gene Krupa is the godfather of drummers!
Keith Moon taught 'em all how to rock!
Ringo Starr was the school of cool!

Everybody else stands on their shoulders, eats at their table, owes them everything!

trickyy 07-20-2004 09:43 PM

duh duh duh danny carey again

freeload 07-23-2004 01:38 PM

Vinnie Colaiuta is high on my list.
Simon Phillips, Dave Weckl and Mike Portney are all great drummers too... but Vinnie is my favourite (besides me ofcourse) - Everybody should have a copy of Sting's "Ten Summoner's Tales" - Fantastic!

NeverBorn 07-23-2004 08:58 PM

Buddie Rich man, ever heard the drum battle between him and Roach? Fucking brilliant

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion and that's fine. Canada's sweethearts live an hours drive away, that being the Tragically Hip, and I honestly can't name a worse band.

With Bonham though, people misjudged his talent for raw verocity and as a result was labelled a heavy drummer which he was, but also missed the musicianship in the fray. If you listen closely enough you will not only hear different motifs in each fill but also a texture that was personalized and distinct in each beat he played. As a pro musician, these understated rhythms and textures are clear as day, and I smile at greatness much like I do all competant musicians from all genres of music and thank my lucky stars.

braindamage351 07-23-2004 09:44 PM

I really do like Bonham a lot. He comes up with the coolest drum beats.

Oh, and I've heard that Neil Peart writes most of Rush's music. Is that true?

wrestlerdiva 07-24-2004 08:39 PM

to add some new blood
joey jordison from slipknot
mick fleetwood from fleetwood mac
tommy lee from motley crue

Omar12 07-24-2004 10:32 PM

Portnoy hands down. He is a great drummer and great musician.

Another one that I like is ?uestlove from The Roots.

saut 07-24-2004 11:06 PM

Still stickin with Danny, but Mick Portnoy defintily deserves some more lovin' in this thread.

pan6467 07-25-2004 01:47 AM

Keith Moon above and beyond anyone else.

Buddy Rich could play massive skins

Mick Avery/ Bob Henrit of the KINKS any drummer that can play while the 2 brothers are fighting on stage and not miss a beat is damn good.

Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys (when clean and sober) was highly underrated

Alex Van Halen would be a big standout but lived in Eddie's shadow.

and Def Leppard's drummer Rick Allen, one armed wonder. VH1 made a great movie out of that story also.

jhk451 07-25-2004 10:59 AM

i second terry bozzio. absolutely sick drummer. can make melodies with his insane kit.

http://drummerworld.com/Videos/TerryBozzio.html

castex 07-26-2004 03:20 AM

Lombardo, yes. Will Calhoun, certainly. Peart, Bozzio, for sure.
Bonham was just fab.
Copeland has such taste, but he holds his stick wrong.
The best, bar none, is Mark Brezezicki, formerly with Big Country.

Coronaboy72 07-26-2004 05:29 AM

Neal Peart - Rush
Rick Allen - Def Leppard
John Bonham - Led Zeppelin
Ringo Starr - The Beatles

castex 07-26-2004 09:59 AM

Are you sure about that last one, coronaboy?

jals 07-27-2004 04:22 AM

John Bonham - Led Zeppelin
Nick Mason - Pink Floyd

DownwardSpiral 08-04-2004 01:12 AM

I don't see how so many of the people on this thread are voting Ringo Starr as one of the most talented drummers, he wasn't that good, in my opinion, I'm not saying that because I detest the Beatles, lol, I'm saying that because he isn't really that talented. Can someone explain to me why everyone thinks he is? Other than the fact the Beatles are so popular with a lot of people?

Probably because most of it is electronic. Watch him, he hits drum once, entire drum riff..... Pretty funny!

jbuffett 08-04-2004 03:08 PM

Neil Peart Rawks!!!!!!!

north 08-04-2004 08:12 PM

wow, all these posts and no one has mentioned Phil Collins. I know, he's a loser adult-contemporary guy who does Disney soundtracks now but there was a time in mid-seventies when he could blow away most of the drummers out there. yes, Neal Peart is amazing, but there is no emotion to his playing. Danny Carrey is another great drummer, i agree.

but ultimately i go with Phil, because he's left handed, plays a backwards kit, and could play a drum solo in 9/8 that still sounded like it had some swing to it.

don't laugh cos i like Genesis . . . .

Cedar 08-04-2004 09:27 PM

Neil Peart.

John Bonham.

Everyone else is debatable.

No, just kidding. There are a lot of great drummers out there. Tim "Herb" Alexander is fabulous; so are Mike Portnoy, Dave Abbruzzese, and...what is wrong with me that I can't think of his name, the guy from Tower of Power. And of course, Ringo Starr, because sometimes it's all about NOT standing out.

I still remember when Jeff Porcaro died. I was sad.

pedro padilla 08-30-2004 09:34 PM

mike bordin from faith no more, ozzy and black sabbath is pretty bad ass. I saw Dave Lombardo (slayer) play with the fantomas recently. That dudes on a whole different level.

Zephyr66 08-30-2004 11:28 PM

Jaska Raatikainen(Children of Bodom) is pretty awesome
Carmine Appice is pretty good, I guess i just say that cause i learned from his book, so i was exposed to him a lot when i started drumming

I need to say Danny Carey one more time because he is so fucking good. Go listen to The Grudge right now, and bear in mind that what you hear is done on a live kit.

rockford1004 08-31-2004 11:19 AM

Wow, I'm surprised Buddy Rich wasn't mentioned more,he practically invented the drum solo, I have to agree with Neil Peart, S Copeland, Steve Gadd, these guys are masters on the kit.

rockford1004 08-31-2004 11:31 AM

For straight ahead great rock drummers, Mick Fleetwood, Stan Lynch, Terry Bozzio, Ginger Baker, Alex Van Halen, there are so many great ones.

Zephyr66 08-31-2004 04:58 PM

1.) John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
Quality band all around and DAMN what a drummer, especially when he goes off on a tangent with those solos.
2.) Stewart Copeland (The Police)
Flexible and talented, respect is due
3.) Larry Mullen Jr.
Skill out the wazoo but rarely recognized for it, and hell, he started U2 so I owe him a spot on the list

Flo Mounier from Canadian death metallers Cryptopsy, if you're into P2P, download the drum solo from the live cd, the guy is the fastest drummer I've ever seen in action, and watching him do the drum solo is so much better than just hearing it, it's crazy. Martin Lopez of Opeth also is a fav. because of his amazing south american inspired style, but doing death metal, it's fuckin awesome.

Neal Peart, listed here for the 86th consecutive time!

tspikes51 09-15-2004 09:18 PM

Steve Gadd, who is also drumming for Clapton; the guy from System of A Down, and Max Weinberg (best show drummer). There was this guy that my friend was listening to who was keeping 3 separate times with different limbs. I'll get his name for you.

thesupermikey 09-15-2004 09:30 PM

Nico McBrain of Iron Maiden for me is one of the most talented drummer. For he has got so much of talent and have u seen his drum store sorry drum kit it covers him so fully that u can hardly see him in the show ... very very tallented and his sense of timing is so amazing ... he holds the band so very well ...

Travis Barker of Aquabats/Blink 182/Box Car Racer/Transplants

Maybe not the fastest but by far the most orignal.

For anyone who cares, his name is Marco Minneman. He has a lot of videos out, and goes on solo tours quite a bit.

heard a funny quip about Ringo, since a lot of you were talking about him. Someone once asked Paul McCartney if Ringo Starr was the greatest drummer in the world. Paul shrugged and said, "Ringo Starr wasn't even the beast drummer in the Beatles."

Don't get me wrong, the Beatles are the earth's greatest rock band, but Ringo wasn't all that hot as a drummer.

Kudos to the guy who brought up Phil Collins. The man is a truly amazing drummer!
