Classical Music
Along with the copious amounts of alt. rock and such I listen to, I also spend lots of my time around classical music. Maybe playing cello has something to do with it, but I love listening to classical as much as my usual fare of Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and so on. So here are some favorites:
Cello Concerto in E-Minor - Elgar Just about anything by Shostakovich Romeo and Juliet - Prokofiev Beethoven's 7th Symphony Swan Lake |
i like a lot of bach, tchaikovsky and baroque music. as well as some impressionistic composers like debussy.
|
mozart's symphony no. 40 is one of my personal favs...also...bach's organ works
|
There is a really cool song called "Day of Tears" by Lacrimosa.
I like Mozart's "O' Fortuna" and Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". I like the really dark pianos. |
favourites:
Smetana - Ma Vlast Shostakovitch - any Charles Ives - 3 places in New England Schoenberg - Verklarte Nacht Zappa - The Yellow Shark that's in order of increasing disorder ;) generally, Eastern European or Russian and music that flirts with melody but sometimes just goes crazy ... I am currently experimenting with Stockhausen and want to try Edgar Varese because Zappa liked him. opera I haven't really got into, though "Nixon in China" by John Adams is ok |
Apeman - SWEET! I was just going to say that I have been on a John Adams kick for about 4 months. He is my favorite living composer, bar none! Check out Harmonielehre or Grand Pianola Music. It is particularly great for driving on road trips...
You guys are impressing me with your interests - shoenberg and smetana? Pretty cool! Prokofiev has always been a favorite for me, particularly Alexander Nevsky and Romeo and Juliet, Suites 1-3. |
i've always liked calssical( as well as alot of other genres). i guess it comes from playing in the school band.
the bad thing is i know very few of the names of the pieces i like. when crap is on the radio, i put on my local npr station that plays classical all day, i like alot, but never know what they are. i like the obvious, mozart, beethoven, bach, but lately, ive gotten into a strauss cd. he wrote great waltzes, even tho i can't dance |
sweet, ill be checkin these songs out. anyone know any more classical music thats good? please tell me.
|
I don't listen to a lot of classical, but one I love is the aria 'La Wally' by Wilhelmenia Fernandez from the French film "Diva". Sublime stuff that will make your hairs stand on end. The film is pretty cool, too!

I enjoy classical a lot. A few of my favorites are.
Canon - Pachelbel The Arrival of Queen Sheba - Handel Ronda Alla Turca - Mozart The Four Seasons - Vivaldi Edit: How could I forget Mandoline Concerto - Vivaldi and Bizet, Carmen - Les Troubadours. |
Toru Takemitsu is my favorite classical composer, though he's definitely not your typical type of classical music; it's very modernist, and features some interesting Eastern instrumentation at times.
I also enjoy Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and Debussy. |
My favorite peices right now would have to be
Pictures at an Exhibition Scheherazade I absolutley love the brass used in both and the great highs and lows for the volume Pkeigs |
My favorite classical composer is Vaughan Williams. Here are a few of my favorites:
5th Symphony (especially the Romanza) Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis ( apart from Fantasia on Greensleaves, maybe his best know piece ) 6th Symphony ( Related to the 4th but kinda weirder, almost as disturbing) 4th Symphony ( This is really powerful stuff....very disturbing) |
