Mac filesharing program (ala SlSk)...?
Hello, long term Windows masochist, newly in love Mac user here...
Just looking for the best file sharing program available for Mac (I have Mac OSX.1, but will be upgrading to .3 next week probably). The thing is, I need something that's along the same lines as SoulSeek for independent music. I'm very much into IDM/glitch, goa, and other hard to find music that is so very abundant on SoulSeek. and I can't program to save my life, so installing the Mac SlSk / Linux version isn't really an option. Thanks in advance! anyone that can help is more than welcome to download my 15 gigs of (IMHO) incredibly great music *grin |
LimeWire is a pretty popular one with Mac users, I think.
|
Limewire is the only one I've ever heard of that's any good, problem is though it really isn't great. I've just kinda given up on downloading stuff on my mac.
|
There's a Windows emulator for most Unix variants that you could presumably use to run Windows filesharing programs under. If you have OS X, you might try looking for something like that.
|
so after some research, here is what I have found...
LimeWire is the single most popular program, but it sucks donkey balls. In fact, if you want to use the network limewire uses and other networks (gnutella, open nap, etc) then you should use MLDonkey which searches multiple networks. HOWEVER, apparently, if you have OS 10.3 / Panther, there is something called Nicotine (found here : http://www.7nights.com/asterisk/arch...or_mac_osx.php ) which is a very easy to install SoulSeek client. I'm upgrading to 10.3 next week, and I'll report back how great and easy Nicotine really is =) thanks much. |
Private OpenNap networks generally aren't worth the effort. The Gnutella connectivity sounds promising though.

you can run soulseek under virtual pc
bittorrent/azureus is pretty good limewire's ok |
yea, im in the same position as you are, longtime windows user, loved soulseek, now have a mac. I use limewire for now, although its not too great. My suggestion is, check out the soulseek site under faqs and they have a list of a couple of projects that have been working on a soulseek client for mac. you should check those out, i know they exist, but i havent really looked at them in too much detail.

I have found Limewire to suit my needs very well. I have KaZaA K++ working under Virtual PC, but I rarely use it. Limewire gets me everything I need, in a fast manner.
|
Get a program called Acquisition. It's a free download. I'm pretty sure you can find at download.com I think it's the best program for Mac file-sharing...
|
Tried Acquisition, did not like it at all. I'm sticking with LimeWire.
|
I'm about to try out Nicotine tonight. There is NOTHING better for getting the music I want (IDM, downtempo, Psytrance, underground [insert genra] ), than SoulSeek... so I really hope that this works (fyi, Nicotine is a SoulSeek port to OSX )... if it doesn't, I'm probably going to try MDonkey or whatever it's called.. Donkey something heh... apparently it searches the Limewire network, gnutella, open-nap, and a few other networks.
|
I'll second Azureus for BitTorrent on OS X. Alternatively you could try mldonkey which supports multiple p2p networks
|
I can't believe nobody's mentioned Poisoned. I've had good luck with it. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
And welcome to Mac. :) |
Nicotine works like magic!
It only searches the SoulSeek network, but, again, it's the best network out there for alot of music. I think I'm going to try MLDonkey and BitTorrent next =) |
Bittorent it great for getting whole albums.
Direct Connect can be good. Acquisition is what I use most often. I switched to it from Limewire, and it is tons better. |
