Gruduation ceremony
Hi everyone.
This is my very first thread...so sorry for any noobie-ness. I need all the help from tfp as much as you all can. Turns out my sister is still in High School, she's a junior, anyways turns out that she's in charge of the farewell video for the farewell assembly being held on the day of graduation. She has a couple of days now to finish the segment but she has no songs or at least any good ones that she wants. So I turn to you all. The video is a compilation of the seniors' memories for those who don't know what I'm talking about. It has pictures and video footage of them from all over the years. It's really nice. The reason I made this thread is to ask you all if you can help gather a couple of good songs for the graduation farewell. I enjoyed mine and it was awesome. Any ideas for those about to graduate? |
Frank Sinatra - You're Gonna Hear From Me,
Track #10 on the That's Life LP 'Reprise 1020'. no clue what CD collection that would be on as my source was an original LP, but should be easy enough to find and I could always upload a decent/high quality version in whatever format. definitely a fitting song for people ending that phase of their life and starting down whatever paths. |
I made sort of a video yearbook my senior year... I didn't spend enough time on it to make it as in depth as I wanted...but, anyway...I used the first part of "The Boys Are Back In Town" by...erm...I forget who it's by, but it's the one that was in Another 48 Hours (not the Thin Lizzy song), "(Don't You) Forget About Me" by Simple Minds...and "It's The End of The World As We Know It" by REM.
I sent out a mass email to my classmates asking for suggestions, a few I remember: Graduate - Third Eye Blind Good Riddance - Green Day 1999" - Prince--though I don't suppose that one would work for your sister :p Closing Time - Semisonic and the themes from Friends and Cheers Oh--and maybe "Here's to the Night" by Eve 6. |
Thank you for your replies. I'll take a look at each song as they're coming with my sister. Thank you all for you help. You all don't know how much help you are.
Thanks, I can't say that enough... |
great avatar CinnamonGirl, that is still one of my favourite Strongbad emails.
|
yeah, that strongbad e-mail rocks.
Surely one of my favs. |
time of your life by green day seems to be a popular choice, as is that boys 2 men song "it's so hard to say goodbye" and i'd love to hear pete rock & cl smooth's "T.R.O.Y." at a grad thing, though that's just pipe dreams.

Isn't the idea for graduation to remember the time you had in school? Meaning, choose recent songs that most likely were popular or well liked that were released when y'all were still in school. I always think its incredibly sappy to choose songs that very few people are familiar with (remember, in High School, people only have ~15 years of music to base their tastes on)
Its fairly safe to say that while a Frank Sinatra tune would be relevant, it sure as heck isn't going to strike a chord with the viewer/watchers. I can't suggest any songs, as I've been pretty detached from top40/alt-rock for the past year. |
The Scientist by Coldplay is a good graduation song IMHO.
|
Johnny Cash's cover of "We'll Meet Again" would be good, but would never win the votes. The Deftones "Pink Maggot" would work, or to a lesser extent, the shortened version "Back to school (Mini Maggot)."

You know I was born in the mid 80's and the music that surrounded me as I grew up were the 90's and so on, and to be honest I don't really like any of it. I am, though, the guy that likes every type of music, rock being the most liked genre and country being the least. The fact is that I really like older stuff. Stuff that happened way before my time. I love classic rock and metal like Peter Fenton, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith, The Doors, Rush, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Megadeth just to name a few. I do like a few people that fall in the modern rock like Staind, Disturbed, Linkin Park, The Rasmus just to name a few. And a couple of every other genre. My point is that I do believe what Speed_Gibson said that alot of music today is somewhat not music at least to my liking IMHO.
Ultimately it was not up to me to decide what songs to put on the segment or not, it was up to my sis. And if anyone else comes up with something to add, please don't hesitate to post your proposal. The list of songs right now are: Semisonic - Closing Time Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me Third Eye Blind - Graduation (Cant Hardly Wait Soundtrack) Vitamin C - Graduation (Friends Forever) Boys II Men - Its So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday Eve 6 - Here's To The Night Lee Ann Womak - I Hope You Dance Green Day - Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) Hoobastank - The Reason Is You I'll Be There For You (Friends Theme Song) - The Rembrants R. Kelly - The Worlds Greatest 10000 Maniacs - These Are Days Billie Joel - Times To Remember Sarah McLachlan - I Will Remember You Seether - Broken What do you guys think? Yeah, I like "The Scientist" song by Coldplay, I'll bring that up to her and see what she thinks. Thank you Speed Gibson, CinnamonGirl, Wordssmith22, Present Future, Killer Yoda (I'll bring those songs up to her when I get the chance), and War Wagon. Thank you all for helping me and my sister. If anyone thinks of anything else, please let us know. |
I've been thinking and the reason why a lot of people today, especially teenagers, listen to the junk that comes out today is because they're never really given the chance to explore the world of music. MTV, VH1, and all the music channels advertise today's music.
As I grew up I was exposed to both world's, at least that's how I think of it, on one side I heard stuff before my time and stuff after my time on the other. You would think as time passes by that things might have gotten better than they already were, at least as far as music goes, but that's not the case. I found that music before my time was to my liking more than anything of today. I'm grateful for that, I was given the chance to decide what to like. |
Foo Fighters- My Hero
Green Day- Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) those are the two I can really say off hand.... I'd have to take a look at my collection |
Here's a couple more I came up with. They're not exactly recent, but they'll do nicely.
Sting and The Police - Every Breath You Take The Beatles - With A Little Help From My Friends The Beatles - In My Life |
I'd add
Long and Winding Road -- The Beatles Forever Young - (I like the Pretenders version, but Dylan's version is also outstanding) Here I go Again -- Whitesnake How can you not include the classic (oh wait, I'm old) Schools Out - Alice Cooper Learning to Fly - Tom Petty These are the Days - 10,000 maniacs |
