Tool working on next album!
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/148...headlines=true
Apparently they have 10-12 songs in the works, but won't start completing until Maynard is done with A Perfect Circle touring. New release slated for early 2005! |

Fuckin A, this is great news. DVD this summer sounds like it could be great and a new album, well that's just super keen.
|
wewt! :)
thx for the news, def. something to look forward to. |
damn right. Perfect Circle rocks and so does Tool!
man he is going to be worn out if he doesn't slow down! |
As a big Mike Patton fan, it's also interesting how they mention him (along with Dave Lombardo) as a heavy influence. It was a very nice surprise when Tool chose Fantomas to open for them during the first leg of the tour and Tomahawk for the second leg. Tool AND Mike Patton in one night... overload.
They didn't just open, too, that was the amazing thing. Each band was a part of each other's set for a few songs here and there... like members of Tool would come out during Tomahawk and play along with them, and Patton & Co. would come out during Tool's set and play along. I can't wait to see/hear what the next release will be like. The leap from Undertow to Aenima was huge, very different, and amazing, just like the leap from Aenima to Lateralus. I imagine the next leap will be just as good. Plus, they always put some kick ass artwork in their CDs. |
What Stompy said. They just keep getting better. Lateralus was incredible, so the new one should be fucking gucci.
|
TOOL kick serious ass and never ever dissapoint!
|
They are by far, one of the best at what they do.
|
I remember reading some time ago that Maynard wanted to do a story/theme album ala Pink Floyd's The Wall for a future Tool album.
If anyone can pull that off it's Tool. DVD this summer?!?! Details!! Details!! Edit: never mind, read the artical :P |
Man! that's the news I've been waiting for 3 years!! TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!
(didnt see this until now... ) Quote:

I'm stoked that TOOL has a release for a new cd. They never dissappoint. Man I just hope I can see them live.. geez.. |
I will definitely be buying this when it comes out, and I'll definitely be at the show. Its going to be good to get something from TOOL after so long. I'm not too crazy about the new stuff from APC.
|
nice to hear.
|
there hasn't been any official statement from the band about a new album since last april, right? i spent a while searching for news the other day...
|
Found this on MTV.com (?) dated 11.12.2004.

About seeing Tool live: I saw them at Roskilde Festival in Danemark in 2001. It was the first time I heard them at all and I was completly blown away! The concert was just so right with the music. I've been a huge Tool fan since then. Hope they will come to Sweden or in the vicinity soon... |
I can't wait for tool next cd.You know as kid i didn't really like tool, but as i grew older it just greww on me.
|
I love Tool... so edgy, so deep, musically and lyrically genius... A Tool fan for life!
|
I love tool and APC but I don't see this album dropping before mid-summer. I know what they stated but tool likes to take a long time in making records and I'm okay with that. As for the "huge leap from cd to cd" comment from above I think if you go back and listen to the end of aenima you see that third eye is really a shift in the direction of how the lateralus disc is, they do a good job of previewing their next sound for you. I'd expect a more ambient and atmospheric rock a-la The Gathering's last venture and something towards what Opeth has been doing for a long time.
The person who said "if anyone can pull off [a story type album like pink floyd's the wall] it would be tool" would be wise to check out opeth's - My arms your hearse and The Mars Volta's - Deloused in the Comatorium they're both stories told throughout the album and are both phenomenol discs. |

I've seen Tool 4 times live, and the best show had to be the one where Tricky opened for them, and Tricky came out during Triad and beat the shit out of some drums with Danny. It was amazing.
It's really funny that this news came out, because I was just thinking earlier about how they're about due for a new one, since it's going on 4 years now. Also, a good band that can tell a story throughout a cd is Dredg. Very cool, and quite unique. |
You want "a story type album", check out Dream Theater's albums. Amazing musicians.

Anyway, this is definitely a CD I'll be buying and listening to non-stop whenever it actually gets released. Same goes for the DVD. |

Last I heard was that the music tracks were already done and they're waiting for Maynard to lay down the vocals so I'd imagine release isn't too far away. I've never seen Tool live but I did see APC. If that concert was any indication of how good Tool will be live I will wet my pants.
|
Great! I can hardly wait.
|
I've seen them 3 times, and each time was my favorite. I was going to see them play on Sept 11, 2001, but the show was postponed due to the terrorist attacks. When they played 2 days later, holy shit, it couldn't be any more intense. The attacks were on everyone's mind, and with Tool playing... it was an intense evening on so many levels.
*eidt* oh, I as well am going to buy this the day it comes out. Of course. It seems like Maynard is using A Perfect Circle for his "mellow" (for lack of a better word) side, and using Tool for his kick ass side. Not downplaying any of the other members of either band, they are all awesome. But when Tool comes out, I know I need to be especially prepared to have my ass kicked. Mellow is such a crappy word to describe A Perfect Circle... can anyone else put into words how I'm trying to describe the difference in each band's sound? |
Is it friggin ready already??? Damn, I just can't wait. I will definitely be at any shows in my area. They put on a great concert. Much different from APC shows. Very visual and they overload all your senses. Don't rush but hurry the hell up already!!!
|
Tell you truth I can't wait for this cd.Maybe when they put out their CD they can change this new type of crap rock that's coming out on mtv these days.

I'm more talking about the so called bands like yellow card, that try to act like their rock and crap. What was that other band that try to look all gothic,Simple Plan crap rock like that ,had to look on mtv site to find that crap. I actually like the linkin park/jay z mix.Linkin park never try to act like their some rock group. |
the Tool album should be out sometime this year.
i've actually had the privilege of hearing some of the masters of the new stuff, instrumental, (i'm a distributor for a mini-major record label that produces Danny Carey's side projects) and it sounds amazing. |

honestly, i wouldn't blame you. TOOL and APC are my two favorite bands.

There was an image made by Adam Jones that alluded to a 1/17/06 release date, which is on a Tuesday and coincidentally is a special date in the story of Rennes-le-Chateau (the band members are supposedly into it all).
I'm thinkin it's not likely because it's 2 months away, and generally once an album is done, there's generally a 4 month period before it actually hits shelves.. |
Tool has about ten songs i REALLY like, but i don't really care for the rest. nevertheless, i'm looking forward to this album, it will definitely be worth listening to.
|
3 weeks away and no usenet leak! (I assume all torrents/p2p are fake anyhow)
I plan on buying it anyway but... you know, the suspense factor. I really can't help myself. New single, Vicarious, comes out next week! Anyone happen to hear it yet? <img src="http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a14/fork666/STEREOSCOPIC/10000Tfiealus_.jpg"/> |
thanks for the update. I had actually forgotten about this album release. Shame on me!!
|
Where am I going to be 3 weeks from now? Sleeping in front of Circuit City.
Well, I won't go that far but I'll definately pick it up. |
Album art (looks legit). Stereogram type of deal. Neato!

Yeah, but there's always a failure point about 3 weeks away from release since millions and millions of CDs need to be made.
It's nearly impossible to stop someone from getting a copy somewhere, somehow. I'm just curious as to why/how it hasn't leaked! It just intrigues me. |
here's 30 seconds of vicarious that was streamed on a local radio station:
http://media.putfile.com/Tool---Vicarious---30sec-Clip- very promising |
I'm excited about music again! I absolutely can not wait for this album!
|
Single is up on alt.binaries.mp3 !
It's real and it's GOOD. Seriously, I've listened to it for the past two hours straight and it's really REALLY good. |
The beginning sounds exactly like the patient, and then later on it sounds just the middle part in schism, then the schism part ends just like the middle part in stinkfist, also that little xylophone or whatever is straight from a midnight movies song, also a little the grudge here and there, and maybe a little intolerance.
best use of a jackhammer in a song ever though. |
I heard Vicarious yesterday..holy fuck it was awesome.
A radio station around here is playing that song all day today. The song is badass, but I'd rather hear a bunch of different TOOL songs all day with Vicarious mixed in throughout the day. Definately going to get this album. |
Quote:
I heard it yesterday on the way to work. Only caught the last half of the song. I new it must be Tool because of the sound of the drums. Awesome |
whole album has leaked, downloading now
|
not bad. but. sounds like lateralus 2.
decent, not forgettable, but nothing groundbreaking here. tool is definitely one of the most over-hyped bands in history. |
Buddy of mine leaked it to me, and I'm just finishing it up now. It sounds like what I thought it would, a natural progression from Lateralus, but still great on its own. Once it's officially released, I'll be buying it as well. One of the few bands I'll still give money to.
|
nah its nothing like lateralus really... i listened once, it was alright. i cant help but feel "5 years for this?"
|
I think it sounds a lot like Lateralus 2, not that it's a bad thing just that they aren't a band that repeats themselves much. I liked my first spin through the album but it left me wanting certain aspects from their past. I wanted more aggression in the vocals and overall they keep getting softer with each album. Still great but they aren't what they were. The raw sounds of Opiate and Undertow are what drew me to them, that is long gone.
|
i dunno it sounds like theyre actually mocking lateralus sometimes; see lipan conjuring
|
Opiate and Undertow are actually my least fav Tool releases. Aenima and Lateralus were amazing, and I like the direction they keep moving toward.. more "out there" as opposed to cookie cutter band type stuff. But this CD has definitely exceeded expectations I had for it, which doesn't happen often.
There were some worries that it was gonna be a "ehh.." mediocre type release, but I'm enjoying it. |
Three words: Yippee, Hooray and Wahoo!
I fucking love it! Yes, it sounds like a progression from Lateralus, but you can also hear quite a bit of a Meshuggah influence, which wasn't there before, and I also love that aspect! Solid album. Will be a solid purchase. Won't leave my car for quite a while. |
Quote:
Not that what they do now isn't awesome, just that I liked the raw sound. |
10000 days is surely one of the best songs they've written
|
Quote:
IMO, Metallica fits this to a T. Aerosmith, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, etc. It's like.. they start off as great bands then progress into "WTF happened?" Like Tool drifted more into "out there" experimental type stuff and got away from the raw sound in Opiate/Undertow. They "found themselves" so to speak. The typical "Tool sound" really isn't on Undertow anywhere (you know, when you heard the first 5 seconds of Vicarious, you realize, "Oh yeah, that's Tool"). |
I've only heard Vicarious. I have a problem with the lyrical content. In my interpretation of the songs, Lateralus really got to the heart of the matter. It abstracted the essence of being human and various human experiences and used this essence to come to profound conclusions about human life and how it should be conducted, or something, but Vicarious on the surface seems to be about a very banal particular aspect of human behavior, and I don't know what else it could be about. Is he even using the word 'vicarious' correctly?
|
lyrically the album gets pretty personal. wings for marie (pts 1 and 2) is basically an epilogue for maynard's mother.
the lyrics are much more straightforward though, especially compared to lateralus. i'm past the "metaphysics is kewl!" stage anyway. |
I don't think they've written anything about metaphysics. Lateralus just seems to be relevant to the human experience in general, whereas Vicarious isn't. I don't even watch TV.
Edit: 10, 000 days is the best song ever. |
Quote:
"Vicariously I live while the whole world dies." - more or less a social commentary on how people are glued to morbid news.. for ex, everyone couldn't stop watching the 9/11 plane footage over and over. So in a way.. you get an experience from the suffering of others. Sounds like it fits perfectly to me. |
I think of vicarious as experiencing what another person is experiencing. For instance, dying while the whole world dies. It's more specific than just feelings being caused by other people. Vicarious would be feeling naked because I see a naked woman, but being turned on would not be vicarious.
But whatever. I love Tool, and I love the new CD. |
i've come to the conclusion that this album is mediocre. i wonder what i would have thought of this album 3 years ago when i was a raging tool fan?
|
i think the most annoying aspect of Tool has nothing to do with the band itself - it is the fans that overanalyze Maynard's lyrics. granted, they're interesting - thought provoking even - but the pedestal that his words are held upon is absurd. abstraction is not genius.
as far as 10,000 days.... i'm a bit dissapointed. meandering passages, riffs ripped right from Lateralus, little vocal variation. there's obviously some tool greatness, but the album can't compare to Tool's best - Aenima. |
After a few days of listening to it I love it. It will not leave my cd changer anytime soon.
As far as comparason, I like it better than Lateralus but Aenima will always be thier best. I would take a mediocer Tool release over anything that's out there right now. Not that 10,000 days is but I'm just saying... |
I enjoy the album very much. It has defintely grown on me over the past few days. "Right in two" is by far the best track in my opinion. The first 2 and a half minutes of that song is probably the best stuff they've done :D

Amazing and exciting stuff from the Tool camp. Definetly a big change from lateralus, but thats what you'd expect from a band that takes 5-6 years to crank out a new album. Notice how Lateralis sounded nothing like AEnima which sounded nothing like Undertow which sounded alittle like Opiate(but EPs don't count in the equation). The only problem i have with it like i did with Lateralis is that there is too much filler. I know you're all saying, but tool always does that. But it seems to keep increasing, it seems that theres only about 40 mins worth of non-filler tracks.
I may be spoiled but they havnt balanced that aspect well since Aenima, (and i think Undertow was a straight up rock album, nothing artsy about it). and at least there the filler was amusing with recipes for deviled eggs in german and a guy telling you what a dissapointment you are (the baby crying annoys me though). Nonetheless this is a very special album. very introspective. very different. I like the way they kept the overpowering drums and added stronger guitar parts, the talkbox in Jambi is the poop! Look forward to seeing them live in August. I also wanted to know if anyone had heard of Puscifier, i recently learned that Maynard's been doing side stuff with Danny Lohner, and had stuff on the Underworld (1 and 2) soundtracks. I think maynard has one of the best voices in rock ever. And since APC is done i'm anticipating filling the void in the next five years between tool albums. ROCK ON TOOL. |
I finally found the lyrics to the album. Some very power lyrics in this album.
Example: 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2) We listen to the tales and romanticize, How we follow the path of the hero Boast about the day when the rivers overrun, How we'll rise to the height of our halo. Listen to the tales as we all rationalize Our way into the arms of the savior Fading all the trials and the tribulations, None of us have actually been there, Not like you... The ignorant flippants in the congregation Gather around spewing sympathy, Spare me... None of them can even hold a candle up to you Blinded by choices, hypocrites won't see But enough about the collective Judas Who could deny you were the one who illuminated Your little piece of the divine This little light of mine it gives your past unto me, I'm gonna let it shine, to guide you safely on your way Your way home... Ohh, what are they gonna do when the lights go down Without you to guide them all to Zion? What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun Other than tremble incessantly? High is the way but our eyes are upon the ground. You are the light and the way They'll only read about I only pray heaven knows When to lift you out 10000 days in the fire is long enough. You're going home... You're the only one who can hold your head up high, Shake your fist at the gates saying, "I have come home now!" Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father, Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. "It's time now! My time now! Give me my Give me my wings!"... Give me my (x5) "Give me my wings" You are the light, the way, that they will only read about Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance Burden of proof tossed upon non-believers. You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence, Judith Marie, unconditional one. Daylight dims leaving cool flourescence. Difficult to see you in this light. Please forgive this bold suggestion: Should you see your maker's face tonight Look him in the eye Look him in the eye and tell him I never lived a lie, never took a life, But surely saved one Hallejullah, It's time for you to bring me home. This is about his mother who was paralized from a stroke and died 27 years later, 10,000 days. |
It occurs to me that I only have until the end of June until I have been alive for 10,000 days. I'm looking forward to this album. Patience.
Also, cockmonger, Die Eier von Satan is about hash cookies, not deviled eggs. The Eggs of Satan is a slang reference to Satan's testicles. |
did anyone know that 10,000 days = 27.4 years? anyone know what that might mean?

I like that this CD took the very expansive and, for lack of a better word, strange things they did in Lateralus and combined it with their harder, crunchier sounds from Opiate and Undertow. I think if they'd continued in the direction they took in Lateralus they would've ended up somwhere musically interesting but very hard to listen to. 10k days takes what they "learned" in making Lateralus and brings it back into a more listenable sphere.
Also, this is just me, but I've never been one for lyrics. I just don't care what people are saying. If it sounds good, that's really the important part to me. I often put up lyrics in away messages or signatures because I really like the sound of the part of the song they come from, but the lyrics themselves are very weird/morbid/incomprehensible if the source is apparent and I get lots of concerned IMs from friends. Oh well. |
Quote:
As for lyrics I love them. I like to look into the mind of a good lyricist. To see what they're feeling inside and the message they're trying to convey. "Vicarious" is about our appitite for violence on TV and that we wont take a life but we'll gladly watch someone else do it! 10,000 days is one good song from being their best cd ever. Oh I hear that the cd comes with 3d glasses to look at the artwork inside! |
This album is quickly growing on me. Tracks like 'The Pot' and 'Vicarious' have great pace and all songs are reminiscent of earlier work, but with more flourish and the distinct flavour that being more experienced gives to music. I think the segue "Lost Keys" is what began to really warm me to the whole thing.
Also, the cd case is fucking madness. Awesome. |
Imediate thoughts:
Adam Jones is the man. He has gotten really good since Aenima, and also did the art direction, and thus was responsible for the 3d packaging. APC had an effect on Maynard. Vicarious, a bit, and Right in Two, have very APC like themes. The timing is all over the place, but you can still groove to it (unlike some of lateralus). The first time I listened to it was pretty good, but it just keeps getting better every time. I found on Lateralus that some song were just really hard to listen to. If you concentrated, and really listened, you could get into them, and there was so much to get into, but otherwise they weren't good to listen to. The songs on 10,000 days are a lot easier on the ears, but still have a lot of depth. I'm sure I'm going to be listening to it for a long time, and will still keep finding things. Also, I can't help but think that those who found it underwhelming, need to listen to it again. Many many times, with good headphones, in a dark room. |
I found that maynard brought tool to APC on stuff like The Outsider and PET, (very undertowey songs. anyway i write again because i just read the GUITAR WORLD ARTICLE where they interview Adam Jones, i suggest you guys pick it up, maybe i'll be able to find it online somewhere to post, interesting stuff on the mentality of the band ansd why they're so good at what they do.
