The White Stripes

Are they the saviors of modern rock???

Throwbacks to a simpler time?

Genius??

Or do you think they are over hyped?

I think the're pretty damn great and i'm constantly shocked that the mainstream picked them up. I discovered the band about a year before they got big and had figured it would be one of those one hit things that would peter out and i could go back ot loving them on the down low all by myself... but instead i have to come to terms with competing with 100,000 teenage girls and renee zellwiger for the attentions of mr jack. it's not fair :).

irseg 04-19-2004 06:58 AM

Overhyped. If they can't come up with a style of their own, they could at least rip off some better 1960s-era band than The Animals.

Derwood 04-19-2004 08:08 AM

I like em'. Better than the shitty Nu-Metal bullshit that's out there, and also better than the generic neo-punk crap. It's raw, it's loud, it's great.

FoolThemAll 04-19-2004 08:24 AM

Overhyped to some degree, underrated by others. They've got some quality stuff in their catalog, but you can't avoid calling them derivative. I like them.

God of Thunder 04-19-2004 06:38 PM

Over-hyped.

It's a guitarist and a drummer, get over it.

Irlene Mandrell was a better drummer than Meg White.

I realise that there are only two or three people who got that joke, but you gotta admit, that was funny.

Paradise Lost 04-19-2004 06:50 PM

I thought they were great when I saw them all Week on
Conan O'Brien, I think being on a Late Night Show like that
made their sound a 'little more' mellow (in their terms, not much.)

But it wasn't over-loud, over-screetchy, just seemed like two
people making 60s style music, and playing it half-way decently.

Although, I do have to say I downloaded some of
their album-music, and was only really pleased with
a song or two.

Jeff 04-19-2004 06:52 PM

They're amazing. See them live than pass judgment.

Kaos 04-19-2004 07:12 PM

Over-hyped. Terrible singing. This is the decade of the "Whiner Bands"

which is much better than the decade of the big hair, crappy "metal" bands (the 80's).

I like the White Stripes. They have a sound that hasn't been heard recently.

SpikeQX99 04-20-2004 05:45 PM

I don't care if people think they are overhyped, overplayed or whatever, what happened to liking a band for the music that they play?

They play great music in my opinion, and I don't much care what some say about it. Just like I don't care for some music, I like what Jack and Meg are doing. White Blood Cells is a great album as well as De Stilj and Elephant.

sadistikdreams 04-20-2004 07:33 PM

They do sound ALOT like The Animals, but
HEY!
everyone's gotta have their influences, right?

I do indeed LOVE the white stripes. Jack White has FOR SO LONG been my IDOL.

kl0pper 04-21-2004 04:52 AM

i like them a lot
but theyre not doing anything new, or anything amazing
nice little band that got lucky

We are talking about the same decade right? But these days every new band's singer sounds like a high-pitched whine.

Yes, we can include the rappers too :D

Xothan 04-21-2004 02:55 PM

I think that I could train a monkey to play the drums better than Meg White...that being said, I like the White Stripes; they're just fun to listen to.

blankstare 04-21-2004 06:45 PM

Some of their songs are okay, but I never got too worked up about 'em. They're probably more than a little overhyped, but so are most semi-innovative acts these days.

evilbeefchan 04-22-2004 10:54 PM

Loved their performance at the Grammies, and I just enjoy their sound. I admit I'm young, and I probably don't know a majority of the bands that people say they sound like. Whether people think they're rehashes of older stuff, or "saviors" or rock n roll, I really don't care. I like em, and that's all that matters.

Bobaphat 04-22-2004 11:21 PM

I think they are alright. Definately not the saviours of rock and roll, but they make decent music. I wouldn't give them too much time in the spotlight though.

just pick up some blues records
anything

and then listen to black flag

assilem 04-23-2004 05:27 PM

Queens of the stone are the savior of modern rock.

My humble opinion.

kl0pper 04-24-2004 01:45 AM

well they just lost their bass player, drummer and best singer, so...

kl0pper 04-24-2004 01:45 AM

we had a "savior of modern rock" with nirvana
look where that took us
just ignore the mainstream and go straight to the good stuff...

rideough 04-24-2004 07:26 AM

yes kl0pper perhaps nirvana WERE the saviors of modern rock but that was 10 years ago.....do you think people in 1994 were looking back a mere 10 years for major influence...i think not, 1984 was not a great year for rock and neither was 1994. Grunge had become overproduced and over hyped to the point of the major stars being a parody of what they once were...case in point Soundgarden.

Re reading your post i see the sarcasm in it but i got off on a rant there ...sorry!

Krycheck 04-24-2004 08:56 PM

I was losing faith in music recently till I bought Elephant. Great CD.

silent_jay 04-25-2004 08:29 PM

I just don't get this Animals comparrison, they sound nothing like The Animals, I just don't get it. I do like the White Stripes though inspite of Meg White's huge forehead, that thing is huge.

"just ignore the mainstream and go straight to the good stuff..."
you have to be a little pessimisstic to think that in a single year that NO musician in the ENTIRE INDUSTRY came up with a good album
if theres nothing good on the radio, dig deeper
didnt find anything? dig deeper
repeat untill you find gold
luckily nirvana brought some good stuff closer to the surface, ie the melvins, jesus lizard, butthole surfers, steel pole bath tub and a lot of other nosiey bands that wouldnt have gotten the exposure they did without them

I think the perception that mainstream=bad is totally inaccurate. I do not dismiss music simply because radio/MTV have decided to pick up on it. Good music is good music, no matter how many people have heard of it.

wwcd101 04-28-2004 04:31 AM

Anybody heard the new Jack White - Loretta Lynn stuff? He produced and played and sang on her new album. It's kind of cool.

Thanks for listening.

silent_jay 04-28-2004 04:44 AM

mainstream doesn't necessarily mean bad, but with the crappy bands out there today that all sound the same (blink 182, Sum 41,Staind,etc.) Some artists may have put out good albumn and man the radio is not your friend if you are looking for good music where I live, I think they play the same list day after day

yes
but the fact is that the reason the music that mtv plays is because it goes nowhere new
its familiar and appeals to the lowest common denominator
thats not what i look for in any kind of art
i dont listen to music for a "nice tune" or whatever, and thats fine if you do
but i have a passion for the art of music, and so the kind of stuff i want to hear, new radical sounds, are not anything thats ever going to played on mtv

phlox 04-28-2004 08:49 AM

The White Stripes' first three albums are excellent. Elephant is boring, flat, sags in the middle like a fallen souffle. And Jack has gone off the deep end. I used to be a huge fan of this band, and now I'm embarassed to say I ever liked them. Not because they 'sold out,' but because they started sucking big time and Jack White decided to start looking like Michael Jackson and beating up people for no reason.

Stompy 04-28-2004 11:05 AM

(Not knocking anyone who likes them, this is just my opinion)

I saw them play on SNL once, and my god they were horrible. Other than that, haven't heard much of their music. Based on what I saw and the hype that's going around about 'em, I'd have to say they're very overrated. They're no more "saviors of modern rock" than those whiney bands like "A Simple Plan".. you know what I mean, those bands that sound like they put a 14 year old boy in front of the mic.

I'd rather have hair metal back than half the crap that's out now. I can't even explain it.. but like The Hives (or the Vines?), The White Stripes, all those bands... it's like they're trying to be all artistic and poetic, but they really aren't.

Saviors of modern rock would be Tool. They're mainstream, yet at the same time I don't feel like they're getting enough credit. They pretty much are a modern day Nirvana. You can't get any more original than what they do. They're just on such a completely different level than everything else.

The next "official" Nirvana/Led Zeppelin/Beatles should hit any day now... but as for The White Stripes, eh, I think it's safe to say that they definitely aren't one of those bands

Those type of influential bands that are powerful enough to change an entire industry usually come around once the music industry is a complete shitstorm (like it is now, and like it was back in the early 90's).

wordssmith22 04-28-2004 05:23 PM

to answer the ?, they're overhyped

that said, their music is ok with me, largely hit or miss

and the drumming bothers me. meg white looks and sounds bored with everything she's doing, check that SNL performance. not sure if that's part of their thing, but i don't like it a whole lot.

the guitar-drums duo has been done much better. i hear a lot of people compare the white stripes to this other group, the black keys. it's a bad comparison in my opinion, but black keys are really good so if you dig white stripes, you might want to check them out.

Jay Francis 04-30-2004 03:57 PM

Annoyed

I recently heard the one hour live show and interview with them on The World Cafe. I can certainly respect his musical skills, but I just can't get past that irritating voice.

Jadedfox 05-04-2004 11:31 PM

White Stripes, in my opinion, is one of the most talentless bands I have ever heard. I can see their music appealing to confused teenagers but that's about it.
