I like Ministry's cover of " Lay lady lay"
The Gypsy Kings - Hotel California
The White Stripes - Death Letter CCR - Heard it through the grapevine |
I just downloaded the "Hit me baby one more time" cover Travis did...it is great, and pretty damn funny, too (with the people laughing in the background)
Just heard The Agony Scene - Paint It Black. Bad ass.
Pantera's cover is Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever would be on my top five list, along with Mettalica's Turn the Page.
Anything on Aerosmith's Never Loved a Girl, is a fabulous cover of Aretha's Never Loved a Man. In fact the whole Honkin' on Bobo cd is fabulous. |
I've always loved Siouxsie and the Banshees version of Billie Holliday's "Strange Fruit". The original is incredible as well, but the cover brings across the creepy feeling I imagine the lyrics originally brought across when she sang it in the 30's.
Jimi Hendrix's cover of Hey Joe originally by the Byrds.
Reel Big Fish's New York New York (originally by Frank Sinatra).
It's AMAZINGLY better than the original. |
before i heard dave matthews do watchtower 6 times live, i would have said hendrix hands down, now, it is a tie between them

Probably "Walk This Way" by Run-DMC, but that's too obvious. I'm gonna go with "Dangerous Type" by Letters To Cleo.
Fleetwood Mac's 'Oh, Daddy' on Legacy, the Rumours tribute album. Don't remember who did it.
I'll throw in another one:
Cracker's cover of "Loser" by the Grateful Dead |
I never knew Loser was a cover song. Huh. Learn something enw every day
I've only had achance to look at about half these so if it's already been said sorry. Tool did a live cover of Ozzy's Diary of a Madman & The Cure's Love Song mixed together
If one goes by the number of times it has been covered, "Louis Louis" must rank near the top.
When I was in college, the campus radio station had a "Louis Louis" contest. They received hundreds of garage band covers of the song - and played them all. The range of styles and quality was very entertaining. |

As I have heard 300+ on the campus radio program, Louis Louis is my personal "most covered and listened to" song - but the Bo Diddley tune is a terrific one as well.
Thorogood had quite a few but my favorite would be, Van Halen's cover of the KINKS song "You Really Got Me"..... Eddie's guitar on that puts Dave to shame, and since it is later and censorship wasn't as bad, DLR's sexual overtones that Ray couldn't have on the original were cool.
