Kenny Wayne Shepherd & The Blues - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Normally some kind of metal/hard rock band is in my cd player and in my playlist. But for the past 2 months I havent been able to take Kenny Wayne Shepherd out of my deck. Something about the ballsy blues that he just tears through has hooked me. Any opinions on his music? Any other kick ass blues players I should check out? I have a ton of SRV, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Robert Johnson, and Jonny Lang, Eric Clapton, but Im looking to check out more of the underground/not so well known blues players.

That's not strange. KWS is amazing, and really young. He should have quite the career.

I saw KWS a few years ago and the boy can play guitar. I really enjoy his music.

I too find myself with his CD in my deck everyone once in a while, between Tool and Godsmack.

Isnt he somewhat of a child prodigy? He looks 16 on some recent pictures ive seen...and if so, how can you possibly have the blues!

Kenny Wayne Shephard was Stevie Ray Vaughn's prodigy. If I remember right, on his first CD credits he talks about SRV taking him on tour with him when he was young.
I've seen him twice, and he's definately worth going to.

Like everyone said, KWS is great stuff. I think the only thing that could hurt his career is that he sounds *so* much like SRV, but that isnt a bad thing in my book.

looks like everyone got so caught up in praising kws that they forgot to answer the poster!

check out roy buchanan for some very non-srv shredding blues. i like "live stock" as an introduction to him.

indigenous is a group very much in the vain of srv and hendrix. like kws, they verge on being too derivative, but they're good regardlessly.

the black keys! amazing duo of young white guys from ohio who sound more like 65 year-old black guys from mississippi.

if you're into clapton and haven't checked out the john mayall & the blues breakers feat. clapton, then you haven't heard clapton's best blues work.

I second the post for the Black Keys. An absolutely *AMAZING* band that plays some kick ass, fuzzed out blues. They have two albums out, The Big Come Up and Thickfreakness, and they're both great. Definitely check em out.

Another great bluesy artist is Ian Moore - pick up his first album, called Ian Moore. It's killer.

FYI - KWS just did a stint in rehab, and should be recording soon. I love his first album, Ledbetter Heights (which is very much influenced by SRV) but not so much any of his later albums. Blues Shredding sounds about right - too much Satch and Vai influence on those.

Also, KWS's father was a DJ down South and took him to see SRV. SRV met him and saw him grooving on the side of the stage, went over, picked him up and sat him on his amp. He sat there for the entire show. The rest is history. I think he was 18 when the first album came out.
