Musical math

Sheryl Crow + penis = Jimmy Buffet

The Darkness - irony = A.F.I.

The Beatles/Yoko = mediocre solo artist x 4

kutulu 03-09-2004 11:46 AM

Phil + Rex + Vinnie + Dimebag = Pantera

Phil = Down

Phil + Rex = Down

Down = Pantera

Vinnie + Dimebag = Damage Plan

Damage Plan <<<< Pantera
therefore,

Pantera = Phil

God of Thunder 03-09-2004 01:46 PM

Beatles - talent = Rolling Stones

mercury-hg 03-09-2004 03:44 PM

maybe it's just me, but i think darrell's guitar adds much more to pantera than phil's vocals... that, and guitarists tend to be primary song-writers in bands (though pantera claims song-writing credits as a collective)

and on topic:

rush + the strokes + rod stewart = sonic torture

mystmarimatt 03-09-2004 04:32 PM

Korn - Jonathan Davis = something actually listenable.

Tophat665 03-09-2004 04:41 PM

(Rick Astley + Charles Bukowski)*((3 * 20 * Lucky Strikes) + Jack Daniels) = Tom Waits = AC/DC + Isaac Hayes

Sqrt(Talent(Justin Timberlake)) = Talent * i

Tom Jones + U2 = Creed

Ray Charles + Sight - Melanin + LSD - 2*talent/5 = Steve Winwood

Bob Dylan + Blonde Wig - 60%*lyrics = Tom Petty

Tom Petty + Marc Ribot = Mark Knopfler

Greatful Dead - Jerry Garcia = The Doors - Jim Morrison = 0^10

Tom Lehrer + Radiohead/3 + Weird Al Yankovic/10 = They Might Be Giants

Frank Zappa - King Crimson = Tom Lehrer + Lenny Bruce = 1/The Villiage People

2*(David Bowie - 2*David Bowie's Brain/3) + 6 * bottles of black hair dye + 3 * chords = The Strokes

R =1 = A Perfect Circle

Derwood 03-10-2004 06:39 AM

Rush+talent+luck+deal with the devil=Still worst band ever.

Roger Waters - Pink Floyd = David Gilmour - Pink Floyd.

The Strokes' "Is This It" = The Strokes "Room on Fire" (i.e. they are EXACTLY THE SAME)

AC/DC + Lynrd Skynrd + a case of Jack Daniels = Nashville Pussy

Carl Perkins + The Ramones = Reverend Horton Heat

Michael Jackson + Catholic Priests = Scared Little Boys

by the by, i think it should be Pink Floyd - the members?

No. I meant Gilmour w/o the rest of Floyd is equal to Waters w/o the rest of Floyd. The solo material isn't horrible, but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Or, to put it mathematically, Pink Floyd > David Gilmour+Roger Waters+Richard Wright+Nick Mason

I think you might need to brush up on your math.

if Korn - Jonathan Davis = 0, then Korn = Jonathan Davis.
In other words, he is the band. Most probably a compliment to him, not a dis...

Sort of like NiN - Trent Reznor = 0.

The Sex Pistols - Any and all things that punk music stands for (i.e. revolution, social inequity, damning the establishment) + the lyrical talent of your average 10 year old boy = Good Charlotte, Starting Line, Newfound Glory, Sum 41, AFI, The Get Up Kids

Yes, perhaps you should go on about why the hell AFI is included in there. They don't really claim to be punk as far as I know, and I met the guys.

I was going to wax indignant, but now that I think about it, that's a more appropriate equation than I had initially given it credit for being, so let's do it this way:

Aerosmith - 20 years = Rolling Stones - 30 years = (The Strokes + Nickleback) * 10 + Phish

FoolThemAll 03-14-2004 12:43 AM

Country + Pop + Suck = Contemporary Country

Ohh, those are fighting words, lol

You can't blame FNM for Nu-Metal. The people that deserve the blame are Rage against the Machine and the Beastie Boys. FNM never rapped.

What about Epic? I'd consider that just as much "rap" as RatM, or better yet Red Hot Chili Peppers. Somewhere between rap and funk.

God of Thunder 03-17-2004 09:39 AM

Alice Cooper - talent - any hint of originality = Marilyn Manson

Music in general - talent - good writing - actual instruments = today's pop music.

OK, the definition I'm using for "rapping" is "recitation of the lyrics rhythmically without singing".

I define "rap" as "a songwriting form where the artist refers to himself by name and insults other rappers by name". :D

However, I'm interested to know how you draw your line between Faith and Rage. I'd drop them in the same genre, personally.

kutulu 03-17-2004 12:54 PM

FNM's music varies a lot from album to album. They became more diverse as time went on also. They go from typical rock songs (

Hell, with that definition you could call Cannibal Corpse rap! The Slayer's Necrophobic Born of Fire fit that also. :)

That's a nice def.! For me, rap is just as much about image and attidue as it is about music. That's why I have much less respect for a rapper than an actual musician.

Now, I only know Rage from their radio songs, but to me it seemed like all of their songs followed the same formula:
"funky" guitar sounds during verse -> "metal" guitars during chorus.

FNM was totally diverse. Their songs fell into the "traditional" catagories of straight forward rock, metal, jazzy stuff, electronic, ballads, mellow atmospheric stuff, melodic rock, rappy stuff (as some say), lounge singer type stuff, and really wierd shit.

Anyways, back on topic:

Axl + Duff + Slash = Guns N Roses
Axl + a bunch of replacemente (does not)= Guns N Roses

rev_skarekroe 03-17-2004 01:39 PM

Foo Fighters generally had better lyrics. That's all I've got to explain my unexplainable preference for the Fighters over Nirvana.

josh_s08 03-19-2004 04:32 PM

The FNM thing was kinda a joke, i know that they were all over, and i love them, but i believe that they played a huge part in the creation of Numetal, but i'm an idiot, so meh.

I think that Taylor Hawkins is alot better off on a drumset than Dave Grohl is. Thats why I prefer Foo Fighters. I'd much rather enjoy Dave on guitar and vocals than Cobain.

The people on this board + Rolling Stones hate = Wrong

I don't listen to the Rolling Stones that much, but I can tell you for a fact that they ARE great, they just aren't as accessible at first as the Beatles. A good example of this is Midnight Rambler. The first times I heard it nothing seemed to jump out at all. It was just people playing forever. But once you actually get into it you realize that the parts you had relegated to the background were actually the point of the song, and were great. Give the Stones time and you WILL be rewarded.

And the reason I don't listen to Rolling Stones is not because I hate listening to them. I just kind of shifted away from rock.

Oh, and:

The Flaming Lips - perfection + Crazy cult hippies in white robes = The Polyphonic Spree

Paul Simon's Graceland + All the access money can buy + Intelligence + A little Clash + A little 2002 NYC Rock and Roll + Raving Bloggers + A lead singer named Ezra = Vampire Weekend.
