What you wear to a concert?
 

I know that your clothing is probably going to be influenced by whatever music you're listening to, but i was wondering if anyone has anything special or particular for concerts.

Often whilst there, i'll notice a lot of people dressing up for the occasion, in some pretty funky outfits (namely to stand out from the crowd, i imagine :eek: ).

Last few concerts for me have just been my standard black shorts and my now (in)famous Golden State #15 Sprewell singlet :D (which i've had for about 8 years and it's had some good and bad history/memories with it :thumbsup: ) Plus (random) people have recognised me (from previous events/places), and if i get seperated from my crew :p they can usually find me easily; so i must stand out a bit? :D I would probably go shirtless but i don't want to come across as one of those kinda Tough Guys :p ;)

Now getting to a little side gripe of mine. Concert T-Shirts. IF you purcahse a generic concert t-shirt on the night of the concert, do not fucking wear it on THAT night. OK?

You see, with about 6000+ people (sorta average?) at a show, a lot of them (maybe 50% ) are going to get a shirt as well, to support the band and all, show admiration, loyalty...yadda, yadda ;)

So now, quite often you'll hvae thousands of people walking around with the same shirt, which is funny and sad at the same time. But generally just frustrating, cuz evryone looks the fucking same!

So remember kids ;) , no wearing your newly bought concert shirts at that concert. Also, you SHOULD be dancing and getting active at these events, so you'll be perspiring all over your nice new shirt! :crazy:

I went to A Perfect Circle last friday, and the Concert Shirt Sheep Syndrome was evident :(

As for wearing a music shirt, in general, i am undecided about what you're actually portraying, when you wear the same band you're seeing that night's shirt (eg. if i was to wear A Perfect Circle shirt, to the perfect circle concert?)

Obviously i like them, cause i am at the concert! Whoda Thunk It?. It makes more sense to wear another bands shirt (most likely, in a similar vein to that band playing; for my exmaple, Tool etc would be apt :) ), of whom you like to let everyone else know where you're coming from etc. Unless i am missing the point of the music shirt, in general? :eek:

of course there's no rules for what you can and can't wear, but it pays to keep stuff in mind :p :)

I made a t-shirt with footprints and bloodstains all over it with those iron on transfer things, I usually wear that :)

I just wear pants and a random t-shirt, possibly with a shirt thrown on over the top.

Although, I went to see APC too and I realised after I got there I shoulda worn my Tool t-shirt.

I wear whatever. Past 3 concerts I went to I wore jeans and a tshirt. Those 3 shows were all the same band, Dashboard Confessional (I know, I know, I'm obsessed). 2 were solo shows in NYC and the third was a big show outside of Boston. That show.... Man... Lots of 15 year olds in trucker hats. I'd shoot myself before ever joining that trend.

I wear what's comfortable. I sort of think it's lame wearing the band's tshirt during the show. I did buy 2 and my friends make fun of me for wearing them. Then again they make fun of me in general anyway :lol:

Other bands' t-shirts.

I wore a Tom Petty shirt to a Foo Fighters concert, then a Foo Fighters shirt to a Dismemberment Plan concert.

But see, sometimes I'll wear a band t-shirt to that band's show, but it'll be a really, really old one, so everybody can look at me with envy and think, "wow! He was a fan of theirs way back when! Maybe he knows the band! Maybe he can get me backstage! Maybe I'll give him a blow job!"

Try it sometime.

I usually wear a black tux, white shirt, white tie and white vest. But somehow, I don't think that we're attending the same concerts. ;)

Under no circumstances do you wear the shirt of the band you are going to see. Don't be that guy.

I usaully start with shirts and blue jeans, but end up coming home in my birthday suit. however, those concerts are banned now.

I wear my Reverend Horton Heat work shirt (unless of course I'm going to see Reverend Horton Heat, in which case I wear something else)

I wasn't aware that there is a dress code for concerts. Of course, I'm not one that wears clothes to be cool or neat, either. :) I wear whatever's comfortable. I've been to a few concerts, and wore a regular t-shirt and shorts everytime. I've heard that you're "not supposed to wear the band's shirt" before, but I'm still baffled that people have a dress code for going to concerts. Maybe I'm just not in-the-cool. :)

I hear yaz. Besides, what's so wrong with wearing the t-shirt of the band you're going to see in concert? Seriously. I guess I'm too old to understand the "scenester/emo" concept here.

yup i used to dress up for shows. but that was when concerts were a novelty to me.

my first show was marilyn manson/hole in 1997 i believe.
i tried for the 'goth' look but ended up looking more like some 80's raver or something :-D

my hair was in 3 buns; one on the top and two on the sides. the rest of my hair was crimped. i had this pink nike vest on
while my friend wore a leopard print "pimp" jacket. i had black eyeliner on. blahblah.

i don't know. for shows i just wear what i'd normally wear anyday. it depends on my mood. sometimes i want to dress up and look more "indie" and wear one of my skirts. other times i just put on some brown slacks and a shirt or something. but i generally have a sort of 'indie' look, i guess.

i don't tend to wear band shirts at concerts though. in fact, i don't like band shirts at all. with the exception of my glassjaw shirt cos it's just cool :-D i used to be against band shirts completely (something about the people wearing them not REALLY being fans necessarily. but just want to look cool for a show) but now i just don't care. i buy them every now and then. although, i didn't know there was a fashion faux pas about not wearing the band shirt you bought at the concert/festival/whatever on the day you got them like everyone else. i don't mind that everyone looks the same.

I think a dress code for concerts is the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my entire life. I about DIED laughing when someone told me that "you weren't supposed to wear the band's t-shirt to the concert." WHY NOT? Who cares? Jesus. Chill out. Just wear what you want to wear. Oh no! Everyone has the same shirt! WHO CARES!

So materialistic this world is. Only poseurs follow the general rules of fashion. Next time I go to a concert, I'm going up to the vendor, buying the damn t-shirt for the band, putting it on, and jump up and down yelling "LOOK AT ME EVERYONE I'M SUCH A DORK I'M WEARING THE BAND'S T-SHIRT!!!"

Always wear a long sleeve shirt (another shirt on top of you're one of those types)

Benefits
- Protects your arms if the crowd's getting tight. For example - perfect circle concert...forearms vertical in front of my chest to avoid rib breaking. Plus there are some sweaty people with whom i would prefer to avoid skin-to-skin contact with.
-If you're given a colored wrist band, sleeves will hide it incase you're anxious to sneak into better seating.

maybe it's just me, but a concert is the last place to worry about fashion

If I go to a metal show, I wear my green surplus army pants, steel toe work boots, laced up good and tight, and thats it. I stuff my teeshirt in my pocket. Anyother show its usually t-shirt and baggy cargos...to smuggle in my own refreshments.

Khakis and a random shirt

Um... I only ever see rockabilly shows... And seeing as how I'm always dressed in said trend... yeah.

Dark blue Levis cuffed, white undershirt, plaid "cowboy" shirt, black steeled toed boots, and a beer.

Before each concert I attend to the local Banana Republic, spend a couple hundred on a nice shirt, pants, tie, belt. I then go get my hair done, nails done, having them paint my thumb black of course. Ill then go home, take a gasoline bath, light myself on fire and go to the concert in my fashionably late smelling ashes! ROCK!

I hate the guys that take off their shirts, specially hairy ones, nobody wants to be up against that =(.

I usually just wear jeans and a random tshirt.

usually just pants/shorts and a t-shirt. I always wear steel toed boots though! I hate having my feet stomped on. I usually go with the long sleeves too if it's not too hot (outdoors summer show not!). I also hate when some sweaty dude's got his shirt off in the pit or something. They always leave a wet spot on the floor when I knock them on their asses!

Usually just jeans and a random band tshirt, but that's my everyday attire considering ~90% of my shirts are band shirts.

But in response to the original post, what do you do with the tshirt you buy if you're not supposed to wear it?

heh, excellent point, in fact i don't know why i didn't previously mention it; because my brother wore his old 1993 or something tattered Metallica shirt to the 2004 Big Day Out and he looked tough cause it was all greyish and tattered :lol:

Huzzah! I wasn't stating any rules, just some observations. Basically to reiterate; A lot of people already do that and they look the same with their new concert shirts on (that's my own gripe). Dress code and everything else aside, it's just uninteresting (from observation) when everyone has the same t-shirt on :( Maybe it works for me though, cuz i am then above the crowd and am really cool :eek:

Also i thought the premise of a bands shirt was to promote that band. Given you're already at that gig, it'd be nice for you to promote other bands you like to others who like a simialr vein of music. That's the whole point of it, for me. It's all advertising the band. For instance, at A Perfect Circle, i saw a guy with a Dream Theatre shirt on, and consequently looked them up after the show to checkout some of their music. That's what it's all about :D And my justification for it! nothing about being cool or latest fad etc, it's a practicality and courtesy thing for me :D

Just think, if you could enrich someone elses life by wearing something as frivilous as a music shirt. MAGICAL! :D :thumbsup:

Another gripe of mine is people who don't dance or react to the music, but...oh well i wont get into that :p

Keep in mind, these are gripes of mine, i didn't mean to start a fucking rule book! Trust me, i am not above you, so you don't need to do what i say! :) although take it into account if you like. What me worry? :)

Its been my experience that if I wait until after the show, the one I wanted to get is sold out =(. So, If I know I want to get one I buy before and throw it on because don't wanna be holding onto it the whole show you know?

I usually just wear whatever, which usually consists of the exact opposite of what everyone else is wearing. Last metal/hardcore show I went to, I was wearing khakis and a black Polo sweater and some leather slip on shoes. Everyone was like, wtf is this guy, but whatever. I don't see the point in dressing up for a show, but whatever.

My theory on why it isn't cool to wear the T-shirt of the band you're watching is simple. We know you like the band, asshole, you're at the fucking concert! I like meeting people and talking about music at concerts, so if people where t-shirts of OTHER bands they like, it's easier to make conversation.

Strangely, I don't hold this same rule when it comes to sporting events. Yes, I know everyone at Wrigley Field is a Cubs fan, but for some reason, it doesn't bother me that they are all wearing Cub clothes.

That's cause if you go to Wrigley wearing White Sox gear they'll look at you funny.

Or if you go to Fenway and wear a Yankees hat you'll get your ass beat. :D

Probably won't get beat up if you wear a Tool t-shirt to an Audioslave concert.

I plan on wearing my Specials shirt to the upcoming Toasters concert here. Besides that I usually just keep to my jeans/ T-shirt uniform.

Sleepyjack, I wasn't responding to you (or anyone else for the matter)....I'm just baffled at the current condition of the "concert scene" nowadays. "Don't wear the band's t-shirt. <b>Don't be that guy.</b>" What? I mean who cares! This isn't pointed towards anyone particularly, I'm just expressing my disbelief in the matter. Who cares if you are "that guy?" Are we still in High School, where what you wear matters? I thought we all graduated out of that shit.

And I only wear stuff to concerts that I'm going to be able to deal with the entire 3 hours I'm there. Low Maintenance

I usually end up wearing a radio station hoodie that I got awhile back, open over a non-descript t-shirt. I know it's typical indie trend but it's better than wearing the usual sweater that I wear each day.

I usually won't wear the band t-shirt if I buy it at the concert, but that's because I want to wear it the next day.

As for what I do wear...if I have actual seats, I'll dress a little nicer than if we just have floor tickets. Otherwise, yeah, just jeans and a (usually) non-music related t-shirt.

Unless Jimmy Buffet comes back to Cincinnati, then I'm going to be a dork and go all out with the parrothead gear :D

Jeans and an old Metallica shirt

In the winter, cargo pants or jeans and whatever t-shirt strikes the mood, usually a plain black or grey one. In the summer/warmer weather, replace cargo pants or jeans with cargo or camo shorts.

And always, always, the low cut sneakers with lower cut socks.

If it's a show where there is to be some dancing to be had, tight shoes are the order of the day. Only thing sillier looking than hardcore dancing is kicking a shoe off while hardcore dancing

what a fucking dork. I try to wear either cargo pants or cargo shorts. Preferrably something with zippable pockets, so I don't lose my keys or phone. As far as shirts go, I usually wear some sort of musically related shirt. i.e. Burnt by the Sun shirt worn to a The End concert, Hatebreed shirt to a Poison the Well show, and so on....

I almost always wear the bands tshirt to their concert. Usually, however, it's the fan club tshirt, or the tshirt from the last concert tour I saw them on, OR, if I do buy a shirt, I wear it immediately. I'm going to promote my band, before, during and after the show. Those shirts aren't cheap, and neither are the tickets, so I'm going to show my love for said band.

That said... when Dream Theater was in Seattle last week, I was a paid "Gold" ticket holder, so I got a free tshirt with my ticket. I wore that baby with pride before, during and after the show... same with my 2 friends I was with.

There's nothing wrong with supporting your band by wearing their shirts to the shows... gotta get the word out somehow!

Friends and I were at a Strokes concert at UMBC Fieldhouse last October - you wouldn't believe the amount of people wearing the only god damned Strokes tee that was out at the time.

Of course, there were also a lot of mods with ties on, and that wasn't so bad.

But yeah, I think I totally said exactly that line to my friends about the people wearing the band's tee to their own concert.

I had a custom shirt made that says: "I'm Trendy" on the front, and "Abercrombie Chess" on the back.

I like to wear that one.

There's nothing wrong with being obsessed with dashboard. I'm hesitant to admit it, but I am a guy and I love Dashboard... Anyway a few buds and I went to a show here in Chicago a few months ago and we were surrounded by exactly that crowd that you speak of. We walked in past the bar and onto the floor, I looked around and said "uuuh guys, I think we're the only one's here who can go to that bar out there?" They agreed.

Still a kick ass show though.

Oh, and tshirt and jeans all the way to concerts. Nothing to new nothing to nice because it's going to get sweaty smoky and spilled on, at the least.

Usually shorts, my steel toes and some random t shirt and a wife beater. And I usually end up being that sweaty hairy guy with no shirt on. Concerts get so friggin hot that me wearing a shirt the whole time=not an option. Although it all seems kinda funny anyways, not like everyone else isn't sweatin their collective asses off...
