Good Sting Albums?
 

Hey everyone. I've been interested in buying some work by Sting for quite some time now, but don't know where to start. I'm tempted to start with a "greatest hits" album, but those always feel a little vain to me. I like the work he did with the Police, but his solo work seems a little more intricate and interesting. So, if there are any Sting fans here, please give me some suggestions.

his "Greatest Hits" album is good but these are better:

"Nothing Like The Sun"
"Brand New Day"
"Dream of the Blue turtles"

10 Summoner's Tales is good. Always liked hte lyrics on Shape of My Heart. Other than that they guys hasn't made a bad CD really. Haven't got change to get his latest though..

That sums it up right there. Get any one of them. They're all great. I like his new album a lot, Ten Summoner's Tales is pretty good and should have a couple songs you'd recognize, same goes for Brand New Day.

Consistently one of the most talented artists out there, and the music is so rich and diverse

His work is quite difficult to analyze in a few words because of its diversity. Not that he goes from grunge to trip hop or something like Bowie for example, but each album typically carries a sound and theme that is quite unique.

I find 'Soul Cages' to be the most compelling of his albums. I think both his parents had died before the album was recorded, or during. It's a very emotional album in many ways, but not overly sentimental or depressing, just kind of nostalgic in a way, not to mention that it packs quite a few hits, too.

'Mercury Falling' and 'Ten Summoner's Tales' are perhaps the easiest to approach for the occasional Sting lover. And they're the most "poppy", but excellent albums all the same.

'...Nothing Like The Sun' is brilliant too, similar to Soul Cages but perhaps less organized, has some romantic and political flavour to it, in my mind. 'The Dream Of The Blue Turtles' is an early one, has a few tracks I really like, such as Moon Over Bourbon Street, and Russians, if I'm not mistaken. Not bad, but not really one of my favourites - if only because I can't stand Love Is The Seventh Wave. He wasn't quite over The Police when he recorded that one...

Could never really get into the heart of Brand New Day. The Greatest Hits one wasn't bad, as it did have a bonus song or two, Fields Of Gold and then that version of It's Probably Me that appeared on the Lethal Weapon 4 soundtrack...I think. Or LW3. Or LW2. I can't remember...and it has, I believe, a song from the Demolition Man soundtrack, not sure though. Either way it is a fairly essential purchase but not really until you've checked out the actual albums.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the responses. Haha, well it appears that you can't go wrong with most Sting album, but, I think I'm gonna get his first solo recording. It seems the logical place since I've heard a few good tracks on there, and it'd be interesting to see his much it deviates from his work with the Police. Thanks again.

Dream of the Blue Turtles, his first solo effort, was a big departure from the Police days.

It featured Branford Marsalis and Omar Hakim and had a very jazzy feel to it.

I saw The Police during the Synchronicity tour and then saw Sting during the Turtles tour, very different.

Turtles is still one of my favorite Sting albums. But, like it has been mentioned here, I don't think there is a bad Sting album.

Good Sting Albums? Isn't than an oxymoron?


Haha just kidding. I'm not a big fan of Sting, mainly because I'm too young to "be one with his music." So unless it's a monster hit, then I haven't heard it. Most of his stuff that I've listened to is good though.
