The Tragically Hip
I'm not too sure how many hip fans are out there but I know I've seen a few mentions of the hip in various threads so I thought I'd post some news on the hip front.
News from their site: http://www.thehip.com/news.html February 18, 2004 Dear Fans, The new record is recorded and mixed. We had a great time making this album and we are totally pleased with the results. While we still have a number of things to do before presenting "As Yet Untitled" to you, we wanted to let you know the long wait is nearly over. Stay tuned for more record news as well as touring plans in the coming weeks. In other news - charity auction item up for grabs Feb. 26 - see http://www.thehip.com/charities.html Juno 2004 hockey game - see http://www.chartattack.com/damn/2004/02/0903.cfm All the best, TTH I can't wait!! Any other fans out there? speak up. |
I used to be a fan, they started losing me around 'Trouble at the Henhouse' though. It may have been my tastes in music changing, or that the Hip didn't seem to be doing anything new. I haven't really paid too much attention to their last 3-4 albums, but I still listen to 'Fully Completely' and 'Up to Here' quite a bit.

Same here. The Hip were required listening in my senior high / early college days, especially "Fully, Completely", but they peaked and fell, in my opinion.
However, as a true Canadian, I will give any new Hip album a listen. |

Anyway, each to their own. I can understand why someone wouldn't remain interested in a band after moving in a new direction. But I've been facinated by each direction they've taken. Some of the newer stuff is an aquired taste, but that's the kind of music I find in the long run I like the best. But like you said tastes change. |
Well for all you old hip fans it sounds like the Hip are rocking it out again. You can check out a clip of their new single at www.thehip.com and the full song will preview tomorrow night at the start of Hockey Night in Canada.
An interview with Johhny Fay here: http://www.queensjournal.ca/articlep...e40/arts/lead2 Says the following: "How do you think the new album will be received by the public and the critics? I know the tempos are popped right up there, they are a lot faster. It’s more like a record we made called Road Apples, we made that in New Orleans and it was on the heel of a tour." |
anyone?..... buhler?
Guess no one out there pro hip. Oh well, I'm loving the new tune Vaccination Scar. Rockin hip tune! Can't wait for the new CD on June 29th. If you're keen on hearing the new song and live in Canada go check out www.puretracks.com It's only 99 cents. Not too sure why it's not available stateside though. |
The hip are awesome!!!!
|
Yup, count me in as a long-time fan... You can always count on the Hip to show up at university parties, usually in the form of Fully Completely or Up to Here... though, I find the latter was the best album to date. I won't say I'm not into their new stuff, but sherpahigh said it best, sometimes the acquired tastes are those you enjoy all the more. Long live their individuality.

i'm on this boat as well. |
In general, Im not Hip fan, though theyve had a few songs that I enjoyed. My best friend is huge fan though, so I've heard their albums quite a bit... I'm always amazed at how much better the album is compared to the singles they put out...

I really do hate to be critical of fellow musicians and for the record, I never jumped on the Hip bandwagon. In all honesty, I actually do think that a few songs really hit the mark in terms of quality songwriting. But I have never liked them more than not.
I just listened to the Hips newest offering, In Between Evolution. I'm stunned. That was probably singlehandedly the worst record I have ever heard in my life. Absolutely brutal. Speaking from a musicians point of view, (listening for overall musicality outside of the song but still in an accompanied role; tone, texture, dynamics, phrasing etc) and dissecting it as professionally as possible, the only resolve I can fathom is that these guys are so disinterested in what they are doing that it is painful for the listener. The song Mean Streak has the worst outro guitar solo imaginable. Not to be cute, but I played that bad after playing guitar for about six months. That was 25 years ago. The entire record is mush. It's nothing. I'm still stunned. In my own mind, and for the benefit of the odd joke between friends, I always said they sucked. But now,my God, they suck large. To Hip fans, don't take this as a flame or a personal attack on you because you like them or maybe love them. As I said. I'm stunned. I listening to it again this moment and it is just getting worse. Wow. For this record alone in all its blather, the Hip should refund every cent it has earned back to its fans for simply insulting them as they do on this record. |

That's funny. Ahead by a Century is what really turned me onto the Hip. Before that I thought that they were monotonous. Then I really got into 'Bobcageon', 'Don't Tell Me What the Poets are saying" and "Music at work". AFter that I started to explore backwards and now really love the older stuff too. I love the 100th meridian, the 40 fingers and 40 toes song, "they shot a movie in my home town" song, 50 mission cap, etc etc. I don't know the actual titles, so bear with my descriptions! :) |
I haven't gotten a chance to listen to TTH much but it's decent stuff; really good at best, downright awful at worst. As far as Canadian rockers go, I'm going to have to put my chips in Matthew Good. He's just so much better in every possible way.
But in closing, I do have one thing to say: CANADA They started a country, And nobody came. |

 That's some funny stuff there. Don't worry, I won't take it as an insult, though I'm not really sure how it can't be taken as one. I'll merely take it in that you have no taste in quality music. ;) Seriously though, to arrive at such a conclusion after listening to the album once is mind boggling. For myself, In Between Evolution is one of the top releases of the year and definitely does not represent the band being disinterested. But... each to their own I guess. |

I'm glad you enjoyed the record and continue too. I think that's great. But my analysis, as critical as it were, is something I stand by not only as an educated listener but as an established musician. I guess that is what sets us apart. |
Quote:
Other than that, I agree, different strokes for different folks. Just don't get all high and mighty on me because you're an "established musician" and insinuate that I know nothing about music, it's insulting. |
Quote:
And you insulted me first. |

anyway, no matter. We disagree, different strokes for different folks. |
