The Darkness
just saw them on Letterman and all I can say is
WTF was THAT? think early to mid 80s hair band look (ie Poison, Cinderella, etc) and barely listenable singing. the music was tolerable, but hardly anything more. and simply the WORST use of falsetto I've ever heard. Letterman, during the introduction, said something to the effect that they are HUGE in England. if thats true, then the British music scene must be utterly in shambles. if this is the best they have to offer, then it seems that the country that used to regularly produce some of the very best in rock music (and over a long period of time, from the early 60s to now) has finally used up every last bit of real talent it had and is now churning out pure and unadulterated CRAP. my favorite part of their performance was when the three guitarists started doing the clap over their heads thing, trying to get the audience to clap along and NO ONE clapped with them. I almost fell outta my chair laughing. anyway, for those of you who have never heard of them - dont bother, you aint missing a thing. UGH! |
Ha ha ha, I can see where you are coming from, but I never had to live through the horror(?) of the 80's bands. I actually enjoyed the "I beleive in a thing called love" song. I don't know why I liked it, I just did.
I also liked the new outkast CD(s) and I liked "the Love Below" better. |

I'm pretty sure it's just a Spinal Tap thing. A guy at work swears they are a real band though.
|
Oh, and btw, they are not exactly HUGE in Britain, althought they have been reasonably succesful - they almost had the Xmas number one, which is a big thing in the UK, but is often won by novelty records - they lost out to the Gary Jules cover of Mad World.
They are not exactly the leading lights of the UK indie or rock scene, more like this band that gets a lot of radio time and a lot of 30 something people listen to and think are "really good fun" - I still maintain they are just a joke, and they are certainly not here to last. Dizzee Rascal is the darling of the UK music scene at the moment, not people like The Darkness. |
they're making real music, yes. they're just having fun with it. no, of course they're not like that in real life. they're just having a good time with what they do.
people who read into it too much are exactly the reason they're popular |
They can make their own music. They can play their own instruments. Which already puts them above 90% off all bands out there. I rather like their sound, yah it borrows from the past, but it borrows from a rather wide spectrum. As for their looks…well they certainly do what they are supposed to.
|
oh come on, they are just the new Spinal Tap
|
I saw them on Letterman too, I thought it was the single worst musical guest ever. I agree about the horrible falsetto, and WTF was he wearing??
|
Well me personally, I think The Darkness is a worthless waste of oxygen. They lack any originality and are just rehashing something which has been pummeled into the ground over a decade ago, glam died for a reason.
I also can't understand how they could have any appeal, all the local radio stations are like "OMG THE DARKNESS OMGOMGOGMOGMOGMOGMOMG SO COOL", but I REALLY can't stand them, its a sad by-product of the current retro-music fad. |
ok thanks everyone. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who was appalled by that performance. I also thought "Spinal Tap" as I was watching, but they seemed to earnest to be doing a parody.
oh and another thing they did that bothered me was what I call the Cinderella syndrome (meaning the band, not the fairy tale). The Cinderella syndrome is when the frontman comes out and only plays his guitar to do a solo, which is pretty much all this guy did. yes, he played about 30 seconds of rhythm when the other guitarist did his solo (which was AFTER the singers solo), but for the most part, the instrument just hung there like a fashion accessory. anyone who ever saw Cinderella do a live performance should know what I'm talking about. anyway, I hate that shit. either play your guitar or dont, but if you dont play it the whole song, then, IMO, you didnt earn the right to do a solo. |
I think the point was to be as bad as possible. Their video is freaking hilarious. Something to do with space and the singer wearing a poofy shirt on a heart shaped bed or something...
Damnnit, that song gets caught in my head though... |
I was watching something about them on VH1, and I just thought to myself...what the fuck has music come to?

Anyway, i respect any band whose singer has the balls to come out and perform in a spandex bodysuit...haha. |

It's so tongue in cheek though it's great. Granted I haven't heard their entire CD (or catch the Letterman appearance) but the songs I've heard and videos I've seen I enjoy

The whole point is they are getting rich off it..
Regardless of the "hilarity" value, its horrible unlistenable music. |
The most frightening thing is that they are totally serious. This is no parody band.

Doubt it.
I have these things called "standards, morals and dignity" |

there's just one problem with a band based on a gimmick such as parody/satire: the gimmick gets real old real fast. if thats their schtick, good luck to them, they'll be a trivia question inside of 5 years

BTW if anyone is appalled at them making money for their act, you'd have to be appalled at Weird Al making money too... or even any comedy actor. WWE Wrestler. Whatever. Because that's what they're doing. |
Those damn songs are halarious. Ever hear "take your hands offa my woman?" nothing is funnier than hearing someone sing "take your hands offa my woman you mother fucker" in falsetto.. pure entertainment
|
I think that music needs more bands like these guys. They are out playing the music they want to play, playing to have fun and fuck the rest.
I quite enjoy them. It's something to break up the monotony that is todays radio. |

Would you rather another Good Charlotte/Simple Plan or Nickelback/Creed band being played on radio stations 24/7? I'm so tired of hearing the same kind of sounding bands over and over. I think this is awesome. Sure theyre mimicking a style and I dont think they can be serious but it is funny and enjoyable. What can I say I dig it.

This band is comedy, i cant help but like them :)

There's nothing wrong with music that is just fun to listen to. the Darkness is just guilty pleasure rock n roll....music to snort coke off of groupies to.
|
The Darkness are great, I think a lot of people need to get over the fact that they are taking the piss and enjoy it. Sure it's a piss-take, but it's fun.
|
They have been pushed by radio one and the sun newpaper.
Their music is catchy but shite. They have completely robbed their look and sound. on a personnal note I hate them and the fact they have been forced feed to the public means I hate them more. |
nah their pretty cool... i love their music video the song is just ok
