Light songs by normally heavy bands

anybody know of any light, calmer (generally), songs by normally heavy bands? the heavier the band that does the light song, the more poignant the song usually is.

First thing that comes to mind for me is all of glassjaw's lighter songs. in no order, they are:

must've run all day
her middle name was boom
convectuoso (unreleased)
the number no good things could come of/st. alex (also unreleased)
everything you ever wanted to know about silence
trailer park jesus
THE HIDDEN TRACK ON THE ALBUM "EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SILENCE," AFTER THE SONG "MOTEL OF THE WHITE LOCUST"

The reason that last one is marked especially is because that is one of the most moving, beautiful songs i've ever heard, and is added to by the fact that many more of the bands songs are harsh, violent, and mostly hateful (not in a bad way though ;) ). It's an entirely vocal-piano number and it's just utterly heartbreaking... I suggest you all listen to it, people who like any genre of music can generally appreciate this song.

So can anyone else think of particularly light and poignant tracks by normally heavy bands? I'd love to hear some response, I love tracks like this.

Jadey 01-07-2004 02:42 AM

I love these types of songs too. I think that's why I like TOOL so much, a lot of their songs seem to be right on that verge of unleashing something.

A while ago I made a whole CD of these types of songs.

Metallica - Unforgiven
Flaw - My Letter
Flaw - Best I Am
Pantera - Hollow
Pantera - Planet Caravan (Sabbath Cover)
Metallica - Low Man's Lyric
Unloco - Failure
Finger Eleven - One thing
Cold - Bleed
E Town Concrete - Stranglehold
Sevendust - Angels' Son (also Strait Up version)
Staind - Outside
Corrosion Of Conformity - Shelter

I think that's most of the songs I had on the disk.

Those are a few off of the top of my head.

Chingal0 01-07-2004 03:03 AM

between the buried and me - reaction
between the buried and me - shevanel take 2
prayer for a cleansing - a dozen black roses

blah. im tired.

anti fishstick 01-07-2004 03:20 AM

try "lady of my dreams" by vast. man, that song has driven me to tears.

high_way 01-07-2004 03:29 AM

i would agree with jadey on the metallica, sevendust and staind songs plus:

pantera - cemetery gates
stone sour - bother
system of a down - aerials

all i can think of now

brandon11983 01-07-2004 09:31 PM

The biggest one in my head would be: pantera - planet caravan

Few other of my favorites are:

skycamefalling - thera
skycamefalling - the elephant graveyard
poison the well - apathy is a cold body

Stare At The Sun 01-07-2004 10:21 PM

Pantera- Suicide note part I
Killswitch Engage- My last serenade(for the most part)
Fear factory- Invisible wounds

KWSN 01-07-2004 11:56 PM

Now that I think of it...

Hopesfall - Escape Pods for Intangibles
Snapcase - ID/Hindsight
All of the "Damnation" album by Opeth

Sparhawk 01-08-2004 06:23 AM

Dream Theater - Spacedye Vest

*sniffle*

Redlemon 01-08-2004 07:29 AM

The ones that crack me up are:

Sugar Ray - Fly
Extreme - More than Words

Both agressive bands (in their day), but their only hits were sappy love songs.

mrcraptastic 01-08-2004 05:26 PM

Disturbed - Darkness
Mushroomhead - Nowhere to Go
Boy Sets Fire - With Every Intention
A Perfect Circle and Tool have lots too..

hilbert25 01-08-2004 11:40 PM

Life of Agony's cover of "Don't you forget about me" always got me going...

Metallica's Fade to Black is mostly less than their normal fare.

Tophat665 01-09-2004 05:31 AM

Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
AC/DC - Ride On
KISS - Going Blind

Couple of covers:
Faith No More - I'm Easy (straight up cover of that 70's tune, "I'm easy like Sunday morning, Yeeaaaha")
Bruce Dickinson - All the Young Dudes (His solo stuff is generally less hard than Maiden, but this is a note for note Mott the Hoople cover. Only thing that's different is the voice.)
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World (Mad props to them for that cover.)

This one's not what you had in mind:
Reverend Horton Heat - Liquor Beer and Wine. Most of the rest of his stuff is hard driving rockabilly, but that one is a straight country ballad.

OK, the spawn are waking, so that's it for me this morning.

gallopingwanker 01-09-2004 05:42 AM

Demon Hunter- My throat is an open grave
Cradle of Filth- Thank God for the suffering (more slower, than lighter, but stilll, different than the rest)
Eighteen Visions- Love in Autumn
In Flames- Metaphor
Killswitch Engage- The element of one
Thursday- this song brought to you by a falling bomb

moonpie 01-09-2004 08:18 AM

Rammstein - Mutter
Rammstein - Nebel
Metallica - Unforgiven

Of course the first 2 are in German, but they're still pretty kick ass

Serenity
VooDoo

Kiss:
Beth

Grim Reaper:
The Show must go on

Monster Magnet:

No, it's not a German translation of that song. IMO, Rammstein's Mutter is better.
Korn - Hollow Life
Tenacious D - Wonderboy
Cradle of Filth - Thank God for the Suffering
Mudvayne - World So Cold (I guess)

viper11885 01-09-2004 09:45 PM

I'm with the metallica songs. The slower stuff is surprisingly good.

juanvaldes 01-09-2004 10:32 PM

Since most of you have gotten to stuff that poped into my head all I got is

Fear Factory - Timlessness

telekinetic 01-10-2004 01:47 AM

the Beautiful World cover by Rage Against the Machine comes to mind.

Strange Famous 01-10-2004 02:25 AM

Pantera - Cemetary Gates?

Also,

I dont know how heavy they are in the first place

But My Dying Bride - Roads (cover of a Portishead track)

That's pretty nice.

Zorvox 01-10-2004 03:13 AM

'deftones - teenager, anniversary of an uninteresting event'

The only other ones i can really think of are 'lucky you' by the deftones. Incidentally, I love Opeth SO MUCH. But are they typically angry? I'd say they have a pretty even mix. BRILLIANT!

Truly 01-21-2004 08:53 PM

I agree with Metallica- Nothing Else Matters One of my all-time favorite songs. Along with Extreme- More Than Words, but I don't consider them all that heavy...

you are forgetting the deftones acoustic stuff, which i think is amazing....be quiet and drive, and also change. very nice. and one last one "no ordinary love", which suprisingly i dont know where it came from.

also

foo fighters - everlong (regular and acoustic)
foo fighters - my hero (acoustic)

One? Maybe the first half, but I wouldn't consider it that much ligher than the rest of their stuff. Sure, they have heavier stuff, but not enough heavier to make One seem light.

The two that I was going to mention (In Flames - Metahpor, and Opeth- Damnation album) have already been said.

xxmsaxx 01-25-2004 07:55 AM

Man all this great music by great bands and you guys either left off one of the greats or know nothing of them. My alltime favorite slow songs by insane heavy bands are

Acid Bath
1.Smoke the bones of BabyDolls
2.Scream of the Butterfly
3.Dead Girl

Redjake 01-25-2004 08:27 AM

Fade to Black. I LOVE that song. wow I love Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters and One too. Fade to Black I recently discovered (read: past year) and I can't get enough of it.

the acoustic be quiet and drive is one of the most beautiful tings i've ever heard

wrongfullyaccuzd 01-25-2004 02:01 PM

Not really sure if this is valid on several counts, but I wanted to mention Staind's cover of Pearl Jam's "Black." And the original, too, of course.

wipeout 01-26-2004 12:50 PM

the old skool green day song forgot the name

dy156 01-26-2004 02:03 PM

Hello??!!

Every Rose has its Thorn --Poison

The deepest, most meaningful song I know. It still gets to me sometimes. And the chord progression was just so different and cool.

ToolBag 01-26-2004 02:06 PM

Good call on the Deftones acoustic, I love that song.

Thursday - This song brought to you by a falling bomb.

Rawrr 01-26-2004 02:16 PM

From Autumn To Ashes - Chloroform Perfume

Finch - Letters To You

Funeral For A Friend - Your revolution is a Joke

Sevendust - Skeleton Song

Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm

The Used - On My Own

Ohhhhhh... well that was an acoustic version of Letters to You then, the original version is pretty much parallel to the rest of their stuff.

Atomic Pinkie 01-29-2004 10:01 PM

In Flames - Acoustic Medley
In Flames - Pallers Anders Visa
In Flames - Whoracle

to name a few

In addition to a lot of the ones listed above:

Death - Moment of Clarity (instrumental off of Sound of Perseverance - a beautiful song)
Machine Head - The Burning Red
Fear Factory - Timelessness
Flotsam and Jetsam - Trash (acoustic, hidden track on the album "My God" - every metal fan should buy that album)
Faith no More - RV (angel dust, funny song)
Sepultura - Hidden precussion track at the end of "Roots"
Down - Lies and Where I'm Going - Both on Down II

eawe 03-05-2004 12:14 PM

avenged sevenfold - warmness on the soul

but avenged sevenfold is all about the token cheesy power ballad on every album

03-05-2004 06:56 PM

Definately! Also, some of the tracks which switch between heavy and soft are fantastic (eg Venus Blue).

Rammstein I would say Seeman, Mutter and Klavier.

Opeth do some great stuff as Darth Kettch mentioned. Some fantastic acoustic sequences.

I like Fear Factory's softer stuff, usually last couple of songs on their albums. Interesting stuff usually (a therapy for pain, timelessness, etc).

HeAtHeN 03-05-2004 09:46 PM

Type O Negative - Love you to death

NeverBorn 03-09-2004 10:14 PM

If you're talking Mushroomhead softies..its not Nowhere to Go..you need to use One More Day

braindamage351 11-22-2004 08:33 PM

Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence VIII: Losing Time/Grand Finale
This is a great song, and the solo is just amazing. It's the most emotional solo in Dream Theater's catelogue (It's only competition being The Spirit Carries On), but it's buried so deep that no one really notices it.

More Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries On, Space-Dye Vest

For some reason I can't find any ballads from Slayer.

K-Wise 11-22-2004 09:06 PM

Guns & Roses - November Rain
System Of A Down - Spiders
Rush - Tears
Bad Company - Ready For Love
Finger Eleven - Awake and Dreaming, Broken Words
Skid Row - I remember you
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man, Tuesdays Gone
Bush - Glycerine, Alien, Letting The Cables Sleep, 40 Miles From The Sun, Inflatable
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
Queensryche - Silent Lucidity
Cold - Gone Away

I gotta admit most of those probably wouldn't qualify in the normal listeners perception of "heavy" bands but I gauge heaviness by the energy of the music and the anger or vulnerability in their voice...not by I can sream really deep and loud so as to sound angry at everything and really CRUNCH the power chords to where they almost don't sound musical anymore or cliche(A lot of em do have that good ol SHRED solo somewhere in the middle thats cool haha). Ya know? I've never liked that perception of heavy. It creates a lot of corny ass bands that think they have to follow a formula to be considered heavy.

Asta!!

Shizukana 11-23-2004 05:57 AM

Tons of Staind stuff... including Epiphany, Outside, Excess Baggage, Zoe Jane... I guess that's the really toned down stuff... you could always figure in It's Been Awhile, So Far Away, Me, Home, etc too I guess...

Pantera - Planet Caravan
Queensryche - Silent Lucidity
311 - Sometimes Jacks Rule the Realm... excellent one...
311 - Seems Uncertain
Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes
Cold - Bleed
A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras
Linkin Park - My December

monkeydriven 11-23-2004 06:14 AM

awesome songs

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned iced earth, they have some soft ballads which are pretty out of place for a thrash/power metal band. my favourite is A Question of Heaven

Blind guardian has some as well

and i dont think ive seen iron maiden's Fear of the Dark or Blood Brothers on the list yet

If you haven't already, you might want to check out "Midwestern Stylings" by the same band. There's 3 different versions of it and the live version is by far, the most "moving" of them all.

I'll add my own list later.
