Look for a receiver that gives a REAL power rating. By real I mean the power rating with all channels driven, 20-20k. Good receivers with true power ratings are available from Yamaha, Denon, and Integra. Cheap (i.e. Sony, JVC, Pioneer, and pretty much everyone else) receivers rate their power with only 1 channel driven and at 1k. Realistically, the true musical power output of receivers like this is about half of what it claims. Drive all channels and you might get a third of what you paid for.
