The Cure's cover of Jimmi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" Dinosaur Jr's cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" or maybe not. |
I also will put a vote in for "the man who sold the world" - Nirvana... but i wish there were others knew about.. this could be a good thread to find some nice cover songs

I like every cover I've ever heard of Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper", as well as Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put A Spell On You".
Also, I've been looking for a good cover of "Paint It Black". I know there's a good one out there somewhere... |
Soul Kitchen (the Doors song) as covered by X. Its an odd choice of a cover, an infamous punk band covering a doors song (and having a record produced by a member of the doors), but its a great cover.
|
A few...
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (Leadbelly) Audioslave - Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes) Rancid - Vanilla Sex (NoFX) Cake - I Will Survive (Dunno) Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (Dunno) |
The Gourds - Gin & Juice
Michael Hedges - All Along the Watchtower No Use For a Name - Turning Japanese |
Really diggin' No Doubt's version of 'It's My Life'...it was one of my favorite songs of the 80's and they do a great version of it.
|
One cover I can't stand is Metallica's version of Nick Cave's "Loverman." Garage Inc. was, for the most part, a pretty solid slew of covers, but "Loverman" really pisses me off.
Another cover that's pretty horrible is off the Good Will Hunting soundtrack. Some talentless f--k named Andru Donalds covered Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby." Just the thought of this Blues Travellerish cover coupled with Minnie Driver's acting makes me want to cut someone. Anyhow, there are some really good covers out there, too. I really dig Cash's version of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus." Oh, and we can't forget Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower." Covers are always a touchy subject, and usually mirror how talented the band performing them is. William Shatner and Andru Donalds are examples of how pitiful covers can be from the talentless. |
The band throwdown does a cover on the song baby got back and i enjoy that.
|

The Deftones did a cover of say it ain't so by Weezer that kicked a lot of ass. Gary Jules did Mad World by Tears for Fears. So far Hole is the only band that's been able to fuck up a Nirvana song and although it's been said before The Man Who Sold the World was amazing.
So many song titles... my shift finger hurts. |

Couple of fun ones
Rob Zombie - Brickhouse 2003 (originally by Commodores) White Zombie - I'm Your Boogieman (originally KC & Sunshine) Godhead - Eleanor Rigby (originally by the Beatles) Deadstar Assembly - Send Me An Angel is kinda growing on me too... |
dread zeppelin. reggae covers of mostly zep songs. Sung by an elvis impersonator. sounds strange but it works.
|
Impaled - Helga Lost Her Head - Repulsion Cover
|
Children Of Bodom - Aces High(Iron Maiden)
Children Of Bodom - Silent Scream(Slayer) Anything on Iced Earth's "Tribute To The Gods". To name a few: Alice Cooper's Dead Babies Iron Maiden's Number Of The Beast and Hallowed Be Thy Name and Judas Priest's The Ripper Graveworm's cover of Maiden's Fear Of The Dark Sentenced's cover of Maiden's The Trooper Rammstein's cover of Kraftwerk's Das Modell |
Whiskey in the Jar - Metallica --- originally by Thin Lizzy
Mrs. Robinson - Lemonheads --- you know who did it originally |
I love Fountain of Wayne's version of Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time", but that's already been mentioned. I also am a big fan of all the covers from the Nirvana Unplugged album, but those too have already been mentioned.
I guess the best not already mentioned is Toad the Wet Sprocket's version of The Beatles "Hey Bulldog". |
Pearl Jam covering Neil Young's Rockin in the Free World
Eddie Vedder covering the Beatle's Hide Your Love Away Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready covering Dylan's Masters of War -come to think of it any cover Pearl Jam did, except for Last Kiss. Oh, and for the people that didn't know who originally recorded it, it was J. Frank Wilson and the Caveliers. Radiohead covering Neil Young's Cinnamon Girl Metallica covering Lynyrd Skynyrd's Tuesday's Gone There's some more that I just can't think of now. But the WORST cover of all-time and Fred Durst should be murdered for covering this great and beautiful song is his version of The Who's Behind Blue Eyes. |

Any cover of 99 Red Balloons, its a very good song when it isn't so slow and 80's
The Pumpkin's cover of Landslide Donkey Punch covering Bon Jovi's Livin on a Prayer (find Donkey Punch: Live at the Blind Pig on emusic, you wont regret it) And finally, my most recent favorite, the Foo Fighters cover of Darling Nikki. |
I'll save the PJ for last ...
I love cover songs - nothing's more exciting than hearing a band's take on an older song. The ones I can think of that I really really enjoy are: "Voodoo Chile" by Stevie Ray Vaughan (Jimi Hendrix) "Little Wing" by Stevie Ray Vaughan (Jimi Hendrix) "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (NIN) "Black" by Aaron Lewis (Pearl Jam) "Sober" by Staind (Tool) "Diary of a Love Song" by A Perfect Circle (Ozzy/The Cure hybrid song) "Love Song" by 311 (The Cure) "Interstate Love Song" by Hootie and the Blowfish (Stone Temple Pilots) "War Pigs" by Faith No More (Black Sabbath) "Easy" by Faith No More (Lionel Richie) "Faith" by Limp Bizkit (George Michael) "Behind Blue Eyes" by Limp Bizkit (The Who) "Another Brick in the Wall" by Korn (Pink Floyd) "Lowrider" by Korn (War) "Wish" by Linkin Park (NIN) "Take On Me" by Reel Big Fish (A-Ha) Most of the songs that Pearl Jam covers sound REALLY REALLY good - "Crazy Mary" by Victoria Williams "Rockin' in the Free World" by Neil Young "Baba O'Reilly" by The Who "The Kids Are Alright" by The Who "Fortunate Son" by Credence Clearwater Revival "I am a Patriot" by Steven Van Zandt "I Got You" by Split Enz "Interstellar Overdrive" by Pink Floyd "Last Kiss" by Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers "Gimme Some Truth" by John Lennon "Know Your Rights" by The Clash Damn, that was a really long list. |
I know most people haven't heard it, but April Wine does an excellent cover of the Spencer Davis Group's "I'm a Man".
Molly Hatchet does a good job with "Freebird" as well. |
Supernaut - Orig. Black Sabbath covered by 1000 Homo DJs (the Ogre vocals as opposed to the Reznor vocals although to be honest there wasn't much difference).
Solsbury Hill - Orig. Peter Gabriel covered by Sarah McLachlan (pretty much any cover by her). Angie - Orig. Rolling Stones covered by Tori Amos (I only heard it live though. I'd love to find a recording of it). In reply to Glytch: What kind of cover would you like to hear of Paint it Black? I worked in a band that did a latin/blues version of it that worked pretty well. |
Shinedown - Simple Man
Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes Limp Bizkit - Sanitarium(live) Sevendust - Hurt Adema - Nutshell Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal And that new KoRn one(if its a cover) |
Current favorite:
Tom Waits doing "Somewhere" from West Side Story |
"along comes mary" covered by the bloodhound gang
whatever the song the wedding singer in old school was singing and absolutely the best cover of all time, "little wing" covered by stevie ray vaughan |
Van Halen - You Really Got Me (KINKS)
"..........." - Pretty Woman (Roy Orbison) "..........." - Won't Get Fooled Again (the WHO) All 3 songs were done better by VH than the original artist. G-N-(F'N)R - Sympathy For the Devil (Rolling Stones) Aerosmith - Come Together (Beatles) Cheap Trick - Ain't that a Shame (Beatles) Cheap trick - Magical Mystery Tour (Beatles) Cheap Trick - Don't be Cruel (Elvis) Thorogood - 1 bourbon, 1 scotch 1 beer (John Lee Hooker) Dixie Chicks - Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) Sheryl Crow - First Cut is the Deepest (Rod Stewart who covered it from Cat Stevens) Finally, John Lennon - Stand By Me (Ben E. King) |
Korn's greatest hits album released today. Korn covers Pink Floyd's: Another Brick in the Wall (part 1 2 3) on this album. I have to say I was really impressed with the song. The song had a strong Pink Floyd feeling to it but with Jon Davis's awesome throat ripping vocals !
Another note... It is the first korn studio recording that had a guitar solo in a song. |
Pearl Jam
[QUOTE=mamasan]Pearl Jam covering Neil Young's Rockin in the Free World
Eddie Vedder covering the Beatle's Hide Your Love Away Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready covering Dylan's Masters of War -come to think of it any cover Pearl Jam did, except for Last Kiss. Oh, and for the people that didn't know who originally recorded it, it was J. Frank Wilson and the Caveliers. QUOTE] Definitely check out any covers that Pearl Jam has done they are really good. You beat me to it! I love that song, and Word Up is a good one to who ever they covered that one from! |
Jack Johnson - A Pirate Looks at 40 (Jimmy Buffett)
This actually hasn't been released on a studio album, but you can download it free from Jack Johnson's website. (Yes, I know it was on The September Sessions soundtrack, but it's the same version that you can download, which was recorded from a KFOG concert back in 2001 or 2002). Dave Matthews Band - Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan) The best version is from the Golden Gate Park concert on September 12, 2004, when Carlos Santana joins them on stage. I've been listening to Dave cover this for years trying to figure out what was missing, and it turns out it's Santana. (I have a torrent of this concert, if you're interested find me in the IRC channel or send me a private message). Gipsy Kings: Hotel California (The Eagles) Done with a flamenco/rumba twist. Sung mostly in spanish, with a little bit of english in the chorus. This is the song that plays in the background of The Big Lebowski when Jesus rolls. I have other favorites, but they've already been covered on this list. Oh, the worst cover ever has to be the Madonna version of "American Pie." Blech. |
Fiona Apple covering The Beatles' original "Across the Universe"
|
it's easy
how long till tomorrow by anders olson covered by the killer whales other than that i say liquor store by the urge |
