Devo's "Satisfaction" smashes the Rolling Stones's original into a thousand pieces.

AColonyInFlames 10-14-2004 12:13 PM

Oasis's cover of I am the Walrus is my personal favorite cover

Tralls 10-15-2004 10:37 AM

Gin and Juice by the Gourds - the country version remix of the Snoop song.

Harry Cox 10-15-2004 06:20 PM

I'll agree with those who said Johnny Cash "Hurt" (That video makes me cry) and SRV's "Little Wing". Most excellent.

By the way, where can I find the Foo's version of "Darling Nikki"? That's my favorite Prince song.

ravenradiodj 10-16-2004 08:17 PM

- Johnny Cash covering Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat" - intense and chilling.
- Human Drama covering Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" - the only JD cover ever that exceeds the original.
- Unto Ashes covering "Don't Fear The Reaper" - totally goth, utterly different than the original, and actually hauntingly beautiful.
- Faith and the Muse covering Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" - also better than the original.
- Purr Machine's cover of "Send Me An Angel" - Betsy Martin's voice is incredible.
- Apocalyptica's cover of "Enter Sandman" - so wrong it's right.
- KMFDM covering Madonna's "Material Girl" - same as above!
- Inkubus Sukkubus's cover of "Paint It Black" - goth band, but a pretty straightforward cover, with great female vocals.
I could go on all day........

Seandq 10-16-2004 08:20 PM

Darling Nikki - Foo fighters..orginially Prince

Trace 10-17-2004 10:57 PM

nirvana - the man who sold the world
original by david bowie

macsmith230 10-18-2004 10:46 PM

Just a few off the top of my head:
Built to Spill covering Velvet Underground's "What goes on"
Bjork and PJ Harvey doing the Stones' "Satisfaction"
Pixies covering JaMC's "Head On"
Ben Kweller - "Ice Ice Baby"
Grr, suddenly I can't think of the ones I had in mind when I started reading this thread...

Lover's Spit 10-18-2004 11:11 PM

Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" is a classic, obviously.

I think most Leonard Cohen covers are leaps and bounds better than the original Cohen recordings, particularly because he is such an amazing poet with such a godawful voice. Jeff Buckley does "Hallelujah" with the best of them... I also heard a recording of Buckley doing Dylan's "Mama You've Been on My Mind," which was gold.

Haha, I always found Matchbox 20's version of "Time After Time" (Lauper) to be at least mildly entertaining as well.

Trace 10-18-2004 11:50 PM

That nirvana cover is amazing.

radioguy 02-23-2005 02:22 PM

Zac Maloy -- Okie from Muskogee ---- it's from his latest album "Saturday is Gone" as a hidden track, #13....damn it's good.

I Love cohen's voice! It's what makes the tune. But then I like neil young's voice too, so I guess I'm no judge of voice character!

My fav cover has been Let's Spend the Night Together by David Bowie (Aladdin Sane).

Charlatan 02-23-2005 03:38 PM

Almost every cover ever done by the Pixies... My current favourite of theirs is Neil Young's Winterlong.

sgn43 02-23-2005 04:36 PM

I have several favorites, but since it's fresh in my mind (due to listening to it currently), I'd have to say the Minibosses "Castlevania 3", "Ninja Gaiden", "Punch-Out!" and "Mega Man 2" medleys.

Dorky? Yes. But it rocks so hard that you can't deny it, even if you never played the video games as a kid.

supafly 02-24-2005 01:16 AM

Boys of summer - The Ataris

ophelia783 02-24-2005 04:54 PM

Ben Harper, covering Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing"

StanT 02-24-2005 05:05 PM

Eric Clapton covering "I Shot the Sheriff" introduced me to reggae.

The Allman Brothers Band covering "Stormy Monday" & "Statesburo Blues" introduced me to the blues.

Stevie Ray Vaughan covering "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" showed me that it was possible to improve on a Hendrix tune.

kurtisj 02-25-2005 09:47 AM

Nirvana - Plateau - The Meat Puppets
Nirvana - Oh, Me - The Meat Puppets
Nirvana - Lake Of Fire - The Meat Puppets

Rainyshoes 02-25-2005 05:28 PM

Three of my favorites...

Yet another vote for Me First and the Gimme Gimmes..."Nobody Does It Better" than they do ;)

"All Along The Watchtower" by Kelly Richey (actually improvising on Hendrix's adaptation)

And Dwight Yoakam did a helluva job with "Suspicious Minds"

Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies (original by Velvet Underground)
Yesterday - Boys II Men (original by some band from England I can't recall)
Blue Monday - Orgy (original by New Order)
Planet Caravan - Pantera (original by Black Sabath)

I think I heard it said once that Yesterday is the most covered song ever. I must admit the Boys II Men a cappella version is one of my guilty pleasures.

Oh yeah...one more I didn't see mentioned:

Lyle Lovett's "Stand By Your Man"

TexanAvenger 03-07-2005 01:46 PM

Crowded House - Tempted

Hands down my favorite.

Smimpinj 05-01-2005 05:10 PM

akito 05-02-2005 05:27 PM

I like a bunch of cover songs.. here's 2 that I think are well done:

Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons
The Atari's - Boys of Summer

I also like Marilyn Manson's covers, either of Sweet Dreams, Personal Jesus or Tainted Love. I dont know why, they're just fun to listen to.

ChickenNinja 05-02-2005 11:13 PM

Evanescence - Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana)
Cradle of Filth - Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden)
Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love (Soft Cell)

Nimetic 05-18-2005 10:20 PM

Hey - I gotta second this, even if it's adding little to the discussion.

Man. I first heard that song in a mixed goth/punk/industrial type nightclub. It'll never enjoy it quite as much as that first time (dancing, slightly drunk etc) - but it's still a classic. I'm glad somebody else enjoys the song too.

Nimetic 05-18-2005 10:29 PM

I had to list three.

"Here comes the sun" - sung in a very slow melancholy way. Almost sarcastic but without the whine. Some british artist. Wish somebody could find that one for me.

"Hey Joe" - done by Body Count (Jimi Hendrix tribute) is interesting. It comes out wonderful with a slightly harder interpretation.

"Rocket Man" - Kate Bush

illogan 05-20-2005 07:41 PM

schneider tm vs. kpt. michi.gan - the light 3000

if you cant tell (and i dont blame you) it's a cover of the smiths song "the light."

Devoid 05-20-2005 08:02 PM

I think mine is No Quarter, originally done by Led Zeppelin, covered by Tool. I think Tool took it and made it even better than the original, which is an amazing feat.

I hear Sarah McLachlan sing The Beatles' "Blackbird" and Peter Gabriel's "Salisbury Hill" live on Thursday night, and both rocked my socks.

The Postal Service's version of "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins and All Saints' version of "Under The Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers are also up there.

bwhite897 05-22-2005 09:30 PM

The Sundays "Wild Horses"

It was incorrectly labeled as Phish.

Best cover that I have heard in long time. revitalized the song, and it's actually listenable now.

How about Will Ferril and the Newsanchors covering Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight"?

I just saw it on Much Music, and it is a bonus video at the end of the movie "anchorman".

Agreed... that was cool. :D

In all honesty, I didn't think that was them that really sang it, I thought they were just lip synching. :P

A little British goth band called Inkubus Sukkubus does a kickin version of Paint It, Black. PM me if you'd like a copy, it's pretty hard to find.

I've always loved the 7 Seconds version of 99 Red Balloons.
Also love Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Little Wing.
And finally, I have to throw in Tori Amos version of '97 Bonnie and Clyde. It's creepy as hell.

I am a big U2 fan, and i really like their cover of Paint it Black, as well as their cover of Dancin' Barefoot ( Patti Smith ), and their take on the Beatles happiness is a warm gun.

Oh yeah also thier Pop Muzik (M)

And I am kinda surprised that no one mentioned of of the highest rated covers of all-time. Sinead O'coonor's Nothing Compares 2 U is a Prince song.

... speaking of covers, on the new Fear Factory album, they cover
Killing Joke's Millenium and U2's I Will Follow.

I like the originals, and FF covers them well enough (still deciding how well, needs more listens).

n0nsensical 08-07-2005 05:23 PM

I think I have a new favorite--Children of Bodom covering "Oops!...I Did It Again"--you haven't heard a Britney song until you've heard one with a double kick and Alexi Laiho taking over on lead vocals.

Honorable mention goes to Dream Theater for Best Cover Usage in Medleys and Bridges ("In the Flesh", "Starship Trooper", "The Rover", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Have a Cigar", etc.) and Metallica for Most Improved Covers ("Breadfan" and "Turn the Page").

Stompy 11-26-2005 09:35 PM

Lately I've been listening to Tool's cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter".

Hoooooooly hell it is damn good. I'd have to say this now takes top place over any and all covers I've ever heard.
