Misery Music

I've been feeling very melancholic of late, and I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for some miserable tunes I could download. I'm thinking acoustic-based stuff really.

Thanks.

Michael Penn has some depressing stuff mixed in with some more upbeat tunes...nearly all instrumental. For deep dark, though, you need to go metal, e.g., Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs

Whenever I want to stay miserable, I listen to the soundtrack from the Devil's Own. Song #6 especially, I'll just put it on single repeat and listen for hours.

Download some Elliott Smith. Very great accoustic stuff! For a sample get "Elliott Smith - Needle in the Hay"

Maybe some Jack Johnson or some of Nick Drake's stuff. Some of Roger Waters' solo stuff too.

I've got some elliott smith, but only XO.

vonstalhein 12-04-2003 11:20 AM

anything Opeth!! Still day beneath the sun and 'benighted' are brilliant.

"Tomorrow Wendy" by Concrete Blonde. It is about a woman who has AIDS and decides to commit suicide instead of dying slowly.

Early Leonard Cohen is depressing.

Have fun!

*edit* if I'm feeling down, the instumental work of Angelo Badalamenti goes down smooth.

Yeah, Radiohead can be pretty depressing sometimes, especially if you listen to the words.

A certain few of The Cure's songs never cease to make me feel low and hopeless (i.e., Burn, The Twilight Garden, Faith, and A Forest).

monkeydriven 12-05-2003 09:38 PM

Golden Palominos - Dead Inside

Opeth is a good choice.

Depeche Mode - Exciter isn't actually that mellancholly, but it really makes me feel miserable. That might have something to do with my assosciations(spell?) to it.

anti fishstick 12-06-2003 04:50 PM

i also suggest elliott smith.

frozenstellar 12-06-2003 10:08 PM

Something for Kate - Pinstripe (Acoustic)
Radiohead - Creep (Acoustic)
A Perfect Circle - Three Libras (Acoustic)
Endorphin - Can't Hold On
Opeth - To Bid You Farewell
Motorace - Carry On
REM - Everybody Hurts
Radiohead - No Surprises
Silverchair - Emotion Sickness
Silverchair - Miss You Love
Tea Party - Requiem
Tea Party - Emerald

Any of those songs makes me feel like shit. Most i almost always never listen to for good reason, except Tea Party - Requiem, never forget.

queedo 12-06-2003 10:56 PM

pink floyd dark side of the moon

anti fishstick 12-06-2003 11:56 PM

black label society and some of zakk wylde's solo stuff is pretty depressing too.

Spektr 12-07-2003 05:44 PM

Iron & Wine, Mojave 3, Elliot Smith, Sigur Ros

Bob Biter 12-07-2003 06:04 PM

I recommend:

- Labradford (VERY minimalist techno)
- The Black Heart Procession (especially the album "3")
- Cat Power (especially the song "Names" off of "You Are Free" and "Wild Is The Wind", "Satisfaction (I Can't Get No)", "Troubled Waters" and "In This Hole", off of "The Covers Album")
- Portishead (not acoustic, but does the job, especially "Roads" off of "Dummy")
