top 5 songs of the 90s

me and my bud were discussing what songs would be in list of the top 5 songs of the 90s.... i disagreed with some of his picks and here is what i came up with... (in no order, that would take too long to figure out)

tom petty - mary jane's last dance
green day - basket case
red hot chili peppers - under the bridge
nirvana - smells like teen spirit (i guess you just have to include this one)
...
ok i cant decide on the last song

but ill say for the top 10 id include
weezer - say it aint so
metallica - enter sandman (ehh :\ )
rage against the machine - bulls on parade

i know theres some obvious ones that i just cant think of
what do you people think?

Chingal0 11-11-2003 09:51 PM

Snow - Informer
Scatman John - Scatman
Ini Kamoze - Here Comes The Hotstepper
Sir Mix Alot - Baby Got Back
Anything from Suicidal Tendencies

mercury-hg 11-11-2003 09:52 PM

Stone Temple Pilots - Big Empty
Alice In Chains - Down in a Hole
Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose
Stone Temple Pilots - Interstate Love Song
Pearl Jam - Jeremy

rough task, picking top 5 songs from the 90's. i could spend hours thinking about this!

Stare At The Sun 11-11-2003 10:02 PM

So many things to consider in this really...

My two songs that i think should be considered

Rap- California Love (that was 90's right?)
Rock and such- Blur Song 2...(I mean come on, that song always grabs my attention)

goddfather40 11-11-2003 10:19 PM

Smells like Teen Spirit and Under the Bridge are near locks on any list I think.

Another possible obvious one is Creep by Radiohead, which would be on a lot of lists.

I'll throw Santa Monica by Everclear out there as well.

ShadowWraith 11-12-2003 02:01 PM

I'd say smells like teen spirit definitely, but some others (popularity-wise, not necessarily best) would be:

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Californication
Green Day- Time of Your Life
Smash Mouth- All Star
Nine Days- Absolutely (story of a girl)

madsenj37 11-13-2003 03:35 AM

NIN - Closer
Nirvana - Teen spirit
RHCP - Under the bridge
Sublime - What I got
Pearl Jam

I chose only rock because rap and pop are still alive, and rock was the best thing going, but now its gone.

h2ogo69 11-13-2003 11:58 AM

these are the songs that probably did most for any particular genre of music in the 90's if i was going to pick my favorites it'd be a different list...

nirvana - smells liek teen spirit (brought forth grunge)

red hot chili peppers - under the bridge (brought an intense alt rock movement and infulenced thousands of musicians)

green day - basket case (made a neo punk revival movement spring forth)

dr. dre - nuttin but a g thang ( made ghansta rap blow up)

tool - sober / nin - closer (kept metal/ industrial alive during grunge)

jimwah 11-14-2003 06:41 AM

OK, 90's music to me during the 90's was-

Pearl Jam
Oasis
Nirvana
Rage against the Machine
Metallica

Now, It reads as

Tool
Ween
Faith No More
SoundGarden
NIN

almostaugust 11-14-2003 06:52 PM

Mr Jones- By The Counting Crows has gotta be in there.

Speed_Gibson 11-15-2003 09:40 PM

I would start with California Love from Tupac and Don't Speak from No Doubt off the top of my head

SSJwrestler 11-16-2003 10:05 AM

That might be the best song ever.

Add to that some Sublime, Green Day, and Chili Peppers. The SP were '90s, right? Cherub Rock should be way up there too.

SuperMidget 11-16-2003 05:50 PM

I've gotta throw in a couple.

BT, Dreaming (Trance for anyone wondering)

Lucky Boys Confusion, Bossman and Fred Astaire

stinkynutz 11-17-2003 02:12 PM

definately Under the Brigdge by Chilli Peppers.

tool - sober and/or aenema

soundgarden - blackhole sun

offspring - self esteem

beastie boys - sabotage (that's early 90's, right?)

In order to spare feelings, let me just say one word in response to this:

No.

^^^ i really liked that song myself. *shrug* to each his own

Jadey 11-29-2003 04:18 PM

Rage Against The Machine - Freedom
Dr Dre - Nuthin' But A G Thang

KWSN 11-30-2003 07:49 AM

Nirvana - Lithium
Bush - Machine Head

YaWhateva 11-30-2003 12:47 PM

Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight
Rage Against the Machine - Settle for Nothing, Freedom, or Killing in the Name of
Sublime - What i Got
The Toadies - Possum Kingdom

Soda_BoB 12-10-2003 04:25 AM

Yeah, any/every Nirvana Song would do it
Foo Fighters - Everlong (late 90s right?)
Tupac & Dr. Dre - California Love
RHCP - Under the bridge

No Doubt, Smashing Pumkins, Rage Against the machine, Metallica or Pearl Jam has running for fifth

Mael 12-11-2003 06:06 PM

i think soul asylum's "runaway train" and gin blossom's "till i hear it from you" would be appropriate for such a list.

triad 12-12-2003 04:52 PM

Goldfinger - 99 Redballons
Third Eye Blind - Semicharmed Life
Lit - My Own Worst Enemy
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Mighty Mighty Bosstones - The Impression That I Get

At least thats my opinion

AARRRGGGHH!! A cover song doesn't count! No matter how good it is it's artistic value declines in direct proportion to the fact that it has already been done and oftentimes it seems better than it actually is becasue of it's nostalgic appeal.

then how do you explain liking a cover when you hate the original? "come on eileen" i'm looking at you.

Xiangsu 12-13-2003 08:00 AM

I always thought Teen Spirit was Nirvana's worst song. I would still put it in the top five though because it was one of the songs, if not the song, to spark the grunge movement in pop culture.

Heyy I heard the Goldfinger cover before I even knew that it was a cover! And even though it is a cover, it is incredibly different then the original!

And I agree with Mael, being a cover definatly doesn't depreciate its value when one has never heard the original or didn't think highly of the original...

Okay, you've both got a point. But just because you make a valid point doesn't mean I'm backing down from my statement, stupid or not!:p

drown_with_me 12-15-2003 02:12 PM

Massive Attack "Protection"
Alice In Chains "Would?"
Radiohead "Fake Plastic Trees"
Nirvana "All Apologies"
Goldie "Inner City Life"

...some diverse choices. I'll prob get some flack for my Nirvana non-teenspirit pick but looking back, All Apologies seems so much larger than life now since Kurt's passing.

AIC represents the best of the dark grunge rock and Goldie's opus marks the huge bridge in d'n'b's mainstream acceptance.

As for Protection, its just a beautiful song. eh?

IMHO, I'm sure there are huge lapses here....

tangledweb 12-16-2003 08:24 PM

Everclear - Santa Monica

Alanis Morrisette - You Oughta Know

Counting Crows - Mr. Jones or Rain King

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge

Green Day - Basket Case (hell, the entire Dookie album was cool)

The 90's had tons of different styles of music and limiting the list to 5 would barely get you one song from each genre. I left out lots of my other favorites in favor of these that sprang to mind.

SAM821 12-17-2003 01:53 PM

Snoop Doggy Dogg - Gin & Juice

Wreckx-N-effect - Rump Shaker

Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise

Los Del Rio - Macarena

Right said Fred - Im too sexy

come on... you know you liked these songs...
