If you haven't checked out Liquid Tension Experiment yet, do so. (Petrucci + Portnoy + Rudess + Levin (amazing bass player)) I think we've already mentioned some of their songs...? Also, listen to When the Water Breaks, Biaxident and Another Dimension. |
Do You Feel Like I do, Peter Frampton
|
"A Saucerful of Secrets" - Pink Floyd
The live version from UmmaGumma is the best. |
Ive just downloaded the soundtrack of the movie a clockwork orange it got lots of great classical soundtracks. For the ones who probably seen the movie its pretty good.Same goes for the soundtrack from the movie requim for a dream, check it out.

The Venutures have good instrumentals if you are into the 60's/surfing sound. And the only group that has outsold them is the Beatles.
|
What about...
Frankenstein...Edgar Winter Group Classical Gas...Mason Williams. The better part of the Tarkus album by Emerson Lake and Palmer.... |
Pretty much anything by Jeff Beck or Joe Satriani. Satriani's "Summer Song" and Beck's "Guitar Shop" are both excellent.
|
Riviera Paradise - S.R.V.
Eruption - E.V.H. Lots of cool instrumentals by Alan Parsons |
|

Is it true that he taps using eight fingers? (I've seen it described as playin the piano on the guitar...?) |
'Wild Wonderful Purgatory' and 'Almost Heathen' are two classic all-instrumental stoner rock albums by Karma To Burn. They are lovely.

Hmm,
King Crimson - Larks Tongues in Aspic, Part III I wish I could remember the name of the band, but I have some MP3s of a surf band that are just awesome: "Sands Go Vermilion", "Return of the Surfin' Headhunters", and "Faultline". Might be the Del Tones. (Turns out it's Los Mel Tones) Iron Maiden - Losfer Words |
I wholeheartedly second all Mogwai tracks mentioned and would like to add:
"May nothing but happiness come through your door" - Mogwai "Monheim" - Godspeed You! Black Emperor "Dead Flag Blues" - Godspeed You! Black Emperor "Surfing with the Shaw" - Yo La Tengo "Metro Mile End" - Exhaust "Bulletproof Cupid - Placebo |
How could I forget? Jethro Tull - Bouree.; They also do an instrumental version of Coronach live that is awesome (particularly in this, the dotage of Ian Anderson's once mighty voice.)
As for the Guitar Wizards, while I do enjoy Dream Theatre, I don't know any of their instumentals by name. Steve Vai - Tender Surrender an For the Love of God are particularly good. Satch - Crush of Love, Train of Angels, and Ice 9 are favorites of mine. Zappa - G Spot Tornado and The Deathless Horsie, and, or no other reason but the name, Orrin Hatch on Skis. I like Eric Johnson alright, but the only instrumental of his that I can name is Cliffs of Dover, which is awesome, but which has already been mentioned. Al Di Meola is arguably jazz, but Race with the Devil on a Turkish Highway is pretty awesome. So much for guitar wizards: Cake - Arco Arena Walter Murphy - Night on Disco Mountain Metallica - Call of Ktulu |
I like the older metallica instrumentals too, but I also like the '60s surfer rock as well. I was pleasantly surprised when I bought Gary Hoey's album called "Bug Alley". At the end of it, not listed on the label, is Hoey's rendition of "wipeout". It's pretty cool.

great song suggestions,
I have to add Bela Fleck and the FLecktones : lots of their stuff but esp. Big Country (amazing steel drums) and Vic Wooten doing Improv on Amazing Grace off of their last live album, Live at the Quick. Tim Reynolds: I also enjoy quite a few numbers by this man. I've seen him in concert twice and he's just a kick ass guitarist. my favorites are : Put the Gas Mask On, Chatterbox, and Stream. He is amazing to see live simply for the improvisations. |
