Chick Singers

I've grown quite a liking to some chick singers recently. Namely Sarah Mclachlan, tori amos and pj harvey.

i know it may be a little sad, but i quite like dido and jewel as well :o :p
Also the chick from evanescence or whatever they're called? she makes the band much better than they are, IMO. That's just stuff i hear on the radio though, i don't actually have it.

most of the time i find it good music to study to, because it's quite relaxing, so i just put in on between some sigur ros and aphex twin selected ambient works.

anyway, who are some other good chick singers! they seem to be quite underated when they're just as good as the guys singers going around.

ShadowWraith 11-04-2003 07:45 AM

michelle branch aint bad if you dont mind pop rock

mb99usa 11-04-2003 07:47 AM

I like Garbage. They have a female lead singer.

Redlemon 11-04-2003 08:24 AM

I like strong/attitude female singers. Especially in the ska realm (No Doubt, Dance Hall Crashers, Save Ferris).

Back to 80s, I like Missing Persons and Eurythmics.

And (I'm ashamed to admit) I have Pink's Mizundastood CD, which is also good for alternative pop crossover.

and Jack, whats so sad about liking Dido??

the girl can sing, and shes gorgeous, what makes that sad??

meanSpleen 11-04-2003 07:32 PM

Note: There is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying music from a commercial artist. aka dido, michelle branch, sarah mclachlain, etc.

Here are a few singers that you may have not heard of. This is due mainly to little to no airplay.

Eleni Mandell - Top notch singer songwriter. She will eternally be on my list of favorite artists. Depending on what album to try, she goes from rock, to acoustic, to country (my favorite)

Heather Nova - Another fantastic singer songwriter. She got her start a few years before Lilith Fair took off. Since then, she has consistantly put out good albums. She is bigger in the UK than the US. I'm just waiting for her latest album (storm) to be released here in the states.

Repeat - Eva Cassidy - good call quadro2000 - Great vocalist, and she will be dearly missed. Her 2 post-humous albums were found by former bandmates, and include a few covers that are actually better than the originals (sting, prince, etc)

If you like a good fun band, try out Brassy. The lead sing, Muffin Spencer (real name), is the sister of John Spencer, of John Spencers Blues Explosion fame. They put out fun albums that are big on the beat, and seem to revolve around Basketball.

Gillian Welch - the modern folk country singer. Time (The Revelator) is a great album to start off from.

=====

And my biggest recommendation - THE CARDIGANS!!!

If you love "Lovefool" find their debut album "Life". Otherwise, stick to their later albums that are a little more sophisticated. Nina Persson has a good voice, and is well complimented by the rest of the band.

She also has a side project that does equally exceptional work. "A Camp"

I'm addicted to female singers...
Bjork, Tori, Claire Voyant, and bands like Lacuna Coil, L'ame Immortelle, Theatre of Tragedy, Delerium/Conjure One, Gus Gus... yeah... much love for the female voices.

Did I mention that every girl I've ever dated has been a singer?

yeah i know, i don't know why it's sad then?
other guys may give you shit about it i guess. I don't actually think it's sad myself :? Although i agree with you :)

I also have to get a bjork cd sometime. I've heard quite a bit of her stuff and it's damn good. Although i don't actually have any stuff of hers. I liked the movie she was in as well, where she was blind and working in some manufacturing shed. Quite sad in the end though.....

Also the chick from portishead! i don't know her name though?

i dont think any one has said alanis morrissette

i know she has been off the scene for a little while, but she is fucken good

Sion 11-05-2003 05:34 AM

some classic rock bands:
Rush [[singer's name is Geddy Lee. He's a man. Also the bass/keyboard player]]
Heart [[ahh the Wilson sisters, Ann (the brunette) and Nancy (the blonde). Ann has a whale of a voice (matches her ass). Nancy plays a mean guitar]]
Janis Joplin - [[great blues belter]]
and i feel stupid for not remembering the band, but the band that did i love rock n roll. [[Joan Jett and the Blackhearts]]

I like a lot of the names mentioned above. here are some others that I like that havent been mentioned:

Katrina & the Waves (yes, I actually own the Walking on Sunshine album. its pretty good all the way through - happy music my brother calls it, derisively.)
Chryssy Hinde & the Pretenders (any and all of her stuff)
Patti Smith (Because the Night, People have the power)
Scandal (featuring Patty Smythe) - The Warrior, powerful song
the Eurhythmics (Annie Lennox has an awesome voice)

there are more, but thats all that come to mind at the moment

monkeydriven 11-05-2003 06:07 AM

Besides Tori and PJ who are two of my favorites:

Cat Power (Chan Marshall is the womans real name)
Heidi Saperstein
Bikini Kill (Kathleen Hanna)
Sleater Kinney (Corin Tucker)
Mazzy Star (Hope Sandoval)
Liz Phair
Kasey Chambers
Kathleen Edwards
Sarah Harmer

Lorgatron 11-05-2003 11:29 AM

I don't think I've seen Luscious Jackson mentioned. 'Fever In Fever Out' is my personal favorite of theirs, but all of their albums are pretty great. Jill Cunniff is the lead singer, I believe.

Not only is he incredibly beautiful but she has an extraordinary voice, it's quite original too. I love her 80's retro music.

Also another couple of favourites that spring to mine is the lady who sings on Zero 7's Destiny and the woman from Kidneythieves.

mb99usa 11-05-2003 01:53 PM

eddie from ohio - Julie Murphy Wells she has a kick-ass folk/blues voice

SabrinaFair 11-05-2003 07:01 PM

Erin McKeown.
Usually classified as folk, her music totally trascends genre. Some of it's folky, some jazzy, some bluesy. I love her. Her new album "Grand" is especially lovely. Check out "Born to Hum", it's very fun.

bach 11-05-2003 07:19 PM

Emm Gryner, Natalie Merchant, Chantal Kreviazuk

otnorot 11-05-2003 08:11 PM

Not enough people listen to Sarah McLachlan. I just got her new album Afterglow and I'm loving it! :)

It's at a discount price, too, the best idea the recording industry has come up with to curb filesharing.

I recommend checking it out. At least check out the song "Fallen" and "Angel" (a classic).

Gortexfogg 11-05-2003 08:31 PM

Mary Lee of Mary Lee's Corvette. Her voice is amazing, her songs are amazing, and she looks amazing too! Also, she's a big Bob Dylan fan (and that's also amazing).

Chingal0 11-05-2003 09:09 PM

Noone said Mariah Carey! Or Britney Spears! Or Christina Aguilasdrasea!

Seriously tho, Walls of Jericho has a chick singer. I dont like her, but lots do. Um, that trio chick band, Kitty I think is the name. The suck IMO, but its jut my opinion.

Yay.

jvwgtr 11-10-2003 06:20 AM

I seriously love PJ Harvey, along with Beth Gibbons, and Bjork, as several of you have already mentioned mentioned.
But I also have to cast a vote for Martina (from Tricky's albums), and Skye Edwards from Morcheeba.
I'm also still crazy about Angie Hart from Frente!

j8ear 11-13-2003 04:02 PM

Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries is fantastic.

Others of note:

Pat Benatar
Sophie B Hawkins
Indigo Girls
Melissa Etheridge
Four Non Blondes

How about those chicks that play the electronic string instruments and just rock with some great classical music...Very Sexy, very beautiful, and very enjoyable music.

Chick's rock

nanofever 11-16-2003 02:54 PM

Jennifer Hamel of Clandestine has an amazing voice, it is make you going into the fetal position and cry good.

TheClarkster 11-16-2003 04:42 PM

Shirley Manson of Garbage has a great voice. Only real girl singer I know and like.

MSD 11-18-2003 01:45 PM

Lacuna Coil, Archenemy, Enter Chaos, and Evanescence are a few bands with female singers who I listen to regularly.

Sho Nuff 11-26-2003 12:17 PM

Skin from Skunk Anansie has the most amazing voice ive ever heard. It surprises me that woman that thin can have such a big sound.

Also, N'Dea Davenport - formerly of Brand New Heavies but at her best as a solo artist.

tikki 11-26-2003 05:40 PM

I just made a "Chicks With Talent" CD for my trip home for Thanksgiving that has all female singers. here's the playlist for those interested...

Jadey 11-27-2003 02:53 AM

How about Bikini Kill with Kathleen Hanna and The Devotchkas, a female punk band.

vonstalhein 11-27-2003 01:42 PM

My band has a female singer, and everytime i hear her voice i go gooey. I love 'em when they're good, if they're used in the right context so to speak, it's so refreshing.

Chilly McFreeze 12-01-2003 11:59 AM

I have to admit that I like Dido and older Jewel stuff, even though it's not what I normally listen to. I do think that Evanescence disc is one of the top 3 albums of the year - those guys have potential!

PeaceFrog 12-02-2003 08:58 PM

Has anyone heard of Sarah Slean? She's an amazing canadian female singer/pianist. Totally under-rated though, but definitely worth checking out.

Unknown Poster 12-03-2003 06:20 AM

I like Aimee Mann. Nice mellow stuff. My wife looks at me strangely because it is sos totally different than what I normally listen to.

I have to take this opportunity to plug my favorite band, Over the Rhine. They are a local (cincinatti) based band, but have gained a lot of popularity over the last couple of years (signed with Virgin.)

Anyway -- the lead singer, Karin Berquist, is angelic. Plus their music is very versatile (music for every emotion) AND concerts are relatively cheap!

I even have a guitar named after her -- i know, i'm sad.

Bust_Action 12-07-2003 11:26 AM

I don't like female singers (or any singers in particular) that have to change their voice to show it off. My idea is - if your singing voice doesn't sound like your talking voice, your voice is a put on and you should shut the hell up. Notable examples include Christina Aguilara and Gwen Stefani. Notable examples of female singers who DO sing with their natural voice are Shirley Manson and Sarah McLachlan.

ADM 12-07-2003 11:35 AM

I think Christina Aguilera has a great voice. :(. so much h8.

Anyway, Rasputina has great singers. THree girls with cellos!

I usually stay away from female lead singer/bands...but if I had to pick one, it'd be michelle branch.

InTeGrA77 12-10-2003 03:43 PM

i think christina aguilera has a beautiful voice, but she kinda ruins it when she bounces it all over the place in the songs she sings. i don't really like her music, but i think that shes very very talented!

siogo 12-11-2003 07:04 AM

Its gotta be Ann Wilson for me, also Eva Cassidy.
In the late 70s early 80s I saw a girl singer supporting Be-Bop Delux, she was called Jenny Darren she had a stormin voice.
Also a band I saw in the early 90s called The Mother Station, they were a sort of Survern 'Heart' I think they only made one album. Unless you know different?

sailor 12-11-2003 07:29 AM

Eva Cassidy. Quite possibly the best singer I have ever heard. Pick up her "Live at Blues Alley" CD, its incredible.

I also like Norah Jones.
